Good morning, all! Back to Toyland and then the NYPL! Hooray!
I spent a bit of last evening reading large sections of Ethan Mordden's new book on American theatre 1919-1959 ( I believe these are the dates on the cover ), and spent half the book wondering two things: was he relying on memory or had he actually reread plays since he missed things and why the proofreader was so lax. I also found it irritating that, because his audience is primarily musical theatre fans, he was constantly throwing in musical theatre references, including a photo of the Clambake number from CAROUSEL. I found what I read to be full of generalizations, unidentified sources for information he wasn't alive to have witnessed, and a smug, aren't-I-whimsical approach to writing.
TOD: Maybe later.
