George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Joe Lieberman are all flying over New Orleans in a Blackhawk, surveying the progress that has been made in rebuilding the city and the levees. As they fly over the Ninth Ward, Cheney looks out the window, grins, and says, "You know, I could throw a thousand-dollar bill out the window right now and make one of those poor bastards very happy."

Bush says, "Well, I could throw ten hundred-dollar bills out the window right now and make TEN people very happy."

Not to be outdone, Lieberman chimes in, "Oh yeah? Well, I could throw a hundred $10 bills out the window and make a HUNDRED Americans very happy."

Hearing this, Larry Moore, the pilot, rolls his eyes and says, "Man, I could throw all three of you out the window and make 300 million Americans very happy."

Poor DR Jason has had the flight home from hell. I'm so sorry he's had so many inconveniences.

I finished LOVE IS THE DEVIL, a very disturbing but quite interesting look at an artist totally lacking compassion. Daniel Craig has a completely nude frontal shot in a bathtub, plus views of every other inch of him in various other poses (since his character served for seven years as the inspiration for artist Francis Bacon).

Next, I watched another episode of MOONLIGHTING. This one was entitled "My Fair David," Maddie's attempt to make David into a mature adult instead of a fun-loving, overgrown kid. Pretty standard mystery with guest stars Barbara Bain and Robert Joy (who's now a regular on CSI: NY).

Then I began watching EASY TO WED, the color remake of LIBELED LADY. The four leads are OK but certainly not patches on William Powell, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy, and Jean Harlow.

The DVD does not look very good. It's grainy, not especially sharp, and the color looks dated and flat. A disappointmenting transfer.

I only got about 70 minutes into the movie, so I have more to watch when I go back down.

I also plan to watch the second disc of ELIZABETH I tonight and probably another MOONLIGHTING episode.

I've proofed about thirty pages and must rest my eyes.  I'm supposed to have visitor but they're quite late, so who knows.  I kind of wish this dinner meeting were happening earlier than 7:30 as it probably won't leave me enough time to watch a DVD, and I'm far too restless to start one now, nor do I want to get caught up in a movie so that I don't proof.

Darn! The Monsoon is delayed again.

In order for The Monsoon to begin officially, we must have three consecutive days with an average dew point of 55 degrees or higher.

We have had it for two days a couple of times already. Yesterday's was only 51, so we are back to starting over. Again.

It is so hot here and there's nothing much to do, so we sit around and watch the dew point. It is exciting, dontcha know.

I probably removed a very large flowerpot's worth of mud from behind the wheels of the car this morning. But it still falls off with a thunk while we drive. When I look in the rear view mirror, I can see it bounce on the road.

Taking a break from preparing for my book group ladies to arrive with food.  I'm just in charge of the main course, beverages, and the DVD.  Chicken breast strips have been marinating in Montgomery Inn barbeque sauce all day and DH Richard will grill them.  I've made iced Lady Grey tea and lemonade.  I bought Elizabeth I several months ago with the Barnes & Noble gift card that I won at work.  Now I have to go set out some dishes and futz a little more with the table settings.

Oh, and no one mentioned bringing dessert tonight, so (just in case) I stopped at Kroger on my way home and bought assorted cookies and ice cream.  Edy's Slow Churned was on sale, 3 for $10, so we have Cherry Chocolate Chip, Caramel Delight, and Mint Chocolate Chip.  Figured if other desserts show up, my family can eat the ice cream.

Talk about Old Maid and the Thief mythology!

And Derek Jacobi is just brilliant as Francis Bacon.

The whole film has the same "road to destruction" quality that PRICK UP YOUR EARS has, but the film is much more complexly directed and written.

I was very pleased with a couple of "surprise" nominations:

Neil Patrick Harris for best supporting comedy actor in HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Three supporting females in GREY'S ANATOMY got nominations: Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson. (Also two female guest stars: Kate Burton among them).

How about Isiah Washington  ;)

If Rhonda Fleming began running around with the husband of the GREY GARDENS producing team, would the tabloids headline with:

RHONDA FOND O' GONDA?

Back in the 70s, I think it was, there was a girl named Rhonda from a town in Iowa named Fonda and she drove.....a Honda.  They actually made a commercial featuring Rhona from Fonda in her Honda

The cat that gives me the most trouble comes into the bedroom anywhere from 2-6AM and starts tearing up magazines until I get up and give her a treat. The rest of the cats never bother me until they sense that I'm awakem but this one I have to shut out of the bedroom. Spraying water would only succeed in getting some antique furniture wet.

You could move the magazines   ;D

Once again, the mail had not come when I came upstairs to get on-line, so I'm headed down now to check the mail and then read a bit.

I cleaned the bedroom areas this morning, so I don't have to worry about that.

MAJOR storm about to come through.

Laters...

If that's the one that roared through here in the middle of the night, you'd better batten down the hatches, DR Jose, and find your flashlight!

Well, I have caught my breath a little today. I had 2 no shows, one a current client and one a perspective client, but I must admit it was nice to have time to work on the things that have been piling up.

Quote for the Day: Elizabeth George

Quote
Novels were designed to entertain, and those of us who wish to keep the art form alive need to keep this in mind. To aim for lofty literature instead of aiming for a good story with real characters who grow and develop and a setting that's brought to life is to go at the art form, like putting the varnish on the canvas first. I attempt to write a good novel. Whether it is literature or not is something that will be decided by the ages, not by me and not by a pack of critics around the globe.

In the strange dream department....I dreamed last night that all the people I used to work with were gathered around a table and had a birthday cake for me.   I started in saying it was a little late for that and they were just doing that because they felt guilty. Then I went into a big rant telling them all off for how they had treated me etc.

After that I was talking to someone who had been listening who said "Rot in Hell? are you sure they need to do that?"  I said "Yes, actually I do"  and we both started laughing about it.

I woke up feeling good, tired but really good, lol
