I remember being so excited when Aric Lavie and Rivka Raz (the King and Anna on the Hebrrew KING AND I) were on Broadway in TO LIVE ANOTHER SUMMER, TO PASS  ANOTHER WINTER.  Which was co-written by Hayim Hefer and Naomi Shemer - Shemer was a great poet who (among many other accomplishments) co-wrote the KING AND I translation and Hefer translated DOLLY, and was the writer if the Hebrew I LIKE MIKE, another favorite Hebrew album which (for the musical) was set during the Six-Day War. ( I've always felt I LIKE MIKE would do well in an English version, by the way.)   But at a young age, I sensed that i was the only audience member who actually cared that he was seeing Aric Lavie and Rivka Raz.  Ms. Raz was also the Eliza on one of the Hebrew MY FAIR LADY albums; I've seen that available on CD, but foolishly didn't buy it.

Elan - Did you ever hear I LIKE MIKE?  (And also the OLIVER song is "It's A Fine Life.")

I went out to address packages, but soon realized that the preorders for Murder At Hollywood High had all come in whilst I was in NY, so I'd never printed them out - which is what I've been doing for the last thirty minutes - I was a little surprised that only sixteen people had preordered the book - down from the glory days when thirty to fifty would preorder.

And the word of the day is: CIBARIOUS!
Elton's CIBARIOUS nature was relieved when he visited the Elk's Club Restaurant and found that CARIBOU IS, indeed, on the menu.

DR Ron Pulliam - So, you were making both your chicken soup and all the potato salad over the past few days?  That's some quality time in the kitchen.

Oy!  The chicken soup is on the proverbial "back burner" until this evening.  The potato salad assemblage took up more room/time than I planned.

I was still going to do it afterward, but the earthquake shook it right out of my head.  I deboned the chicken, though...and that's ready.

Oh, those wild and crazy Northern Californians!

We have an ulterior motive for doing this annual Halloween BBQ....it's to raise money to offset the costs of our December holiday celebrations.

Robbing Peter, so to speak, so that Peter and Paul can be festive during the holidays.

I have finally caught up on my sleep... for the time being.  It's nice to have 48 hours off from work on occasion.

Now, to catch up on the goings-on around here.

I have the LP of "To Live Another Summer," although I can't remember when last I listened to it. "I Like Mike" is available on CD, but I don't have it.  Rivka Raz was the original Eliza, "Rita" (no last name) was in the revival.

Strangely, the Israeli cast recording that I found to be the least satisfying was "Fiddler" (Yiddish just doesn't translate well into Hebrew). The most surprising success for my money is "Hair" (I know somebody who was involved with that production; the stories she tells...  :o), and it's worth learning the language just to understand Dudu Fisher singing "Bring Him Home"

Think we've gotten esoteric enough here yet? :)

Well, now we know what Noel is up to.  He's doing a concert of music by blacklisted writers.  It would seem to be some sort of benefit - only as far as I can tell, the benefit benefits him and the production entity of Such Good Friends.  Wow.  Not only that, the benefit just happens to take place on - say what?  November 5th?  What a coincidence - the very night of OUR benefit.  And say what?  They're having a pre-show wine and cheese reception?  What a coincidence - just like OUR benefit.  And say what?  They're having a silent auction?  WHAT a coincidence - just like OUR benefit.

My goodness, I am astounded by all these coincidences.  And by the disappearance of the benefitee who apparently likes to benefit and then run.

Today I'll be watching the DVD of Pixar shorts. There are 13 shorts on the disc (running a total of 54 minutes), but only two haven't been released before on DVD. I'll watch them all again, even LIFTED which I just watched two days ago.
Are the two unseen shorts boxers or briefs?  Or one of each?

We are coming up on tomorrow's (farewell/birthday) lunch plus coffee & cake reception and suddenly, one of my co-workers has ANOTHER idea.  She explained it to me.

I was fine with it and suggested she go for it if she likes the idea.

She looked at me in a rather peculiar way, and then said "I thought this was something 'you' might do."

I suggested she come up with ideas she could accomplish on her own and that she leave me out of them.

Meanwhile, another co-worker is responsible for the cards and getting them routed around for signature.  Suddenly, I am swept up in her need to get them into folders and with employee rosters to attach to them so that folks can line through their names when they are done and pass the cards along to others who haven't signed.

It was hinted that I might be the better person to track the cards since I know more of the employees.  I said there is no better way to learn who people are than to track them down to sign a card.  And thatta, as they say, was thatta.

I am not happy with these people.

I'm having happy thoughts about Halloween four years ago.

The night before, der Brucer and I had loaded up the car with most of our earthly belongings, or at least everything that woud fit, rounded up the five doggies, and started our trek eastward to our new home in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

We ended up, that first night, close to the border between California and Arizona.

So it was four years ago today that I first saw the Grand Canyon.  I, frankly, did not care for it at all.  I don't like looking down - fear of heights, or of falling, or at least of my glasses falling off, something like that.

Due to the timing of our trip, and the positioning of the stars and der B's insistance on driving as far into the night as we could before making our next stop, Orion's Belt would often be directly in front of us, rising from the horizon every night.

I still think Driving Towards Orion would make a great title for a book, or a play, or something.

Yes.

And it makes much more sense than Driving Towards Onion.

Of the five dogs, Kelsey, the grumpy and ancient daschund, had to be put to sleep the following summer.  He was simply too old for his body to continue.

Marty, the black lab mix, well his heart gave out last summer.

Mikey, the bat-faced pug/terrier, still has no concept of aging, even if he is ten years old.

Bonnie and Buster, the princess and paw-per who showed up on our doorstep three weeks before the move, are definately running the show these days.

Fletcher, the Dalmatian pony, was added to the mix after Kelsey died, and that's our current pack.

It's amazing how they all get along.

I still have fond memories of that trip, particularly trying to walk Marty, Mikey, Bonnie and Buster all at the same time.  They had a knack for intertwining their leashes in seconds - we could have rented them to a bakery to make challah!
