I just heard from the vet and the blood work over all looks good.  The phosphorus is a little on the low side, which it wouldn't be if she had been given that enema I was worried about.   Her calcium is high - old news - the rest looks good.  Whew!

Neither of these vets can understand why she would be put on prednisone for high calcium, but I was told not to change it right now because she's been on it so long.  So, it's back to the old routine with the new food and hopefully that will do the trick.

There is no indication she has any of the horrible diseases that would cause her to have weak legs, so we think she just hurt in jumping and falling (which I know one of them did the other night).

She was in very good spirits today.   I think that the best outcome has happened.  We went from one extreme to the other in her treatment and now things are starting to settle down.  The vet wants to do a recheck of her bloodwork in 6 months, which sounds reasonable to me and she said if she's acting lethargic, we can always give her more sub-q fluids, also reasonable.

I am breathing a big sigh of relief.

DR Ron Pulliam - Well, you know... If you go around and "collect" the signatures on the cards, you could also tell each and every person that after they sign the card they are to contribute a dollar or two towards the cost of the part supplies.  This way everyone in the office will be a part of the festivities.  ;)

-And, of course, you say that "so-and-so" asked you to go around and have everyone sign the cards... and collect the money.

Track suits would be appropriate, wouldn't they?

Or a priest's frock.  Or a sister's habit.

Looks like Greg Jbara is pulling out of the benefit - booked a pilot presentation, and some other TV guest shot - they tell him he might be out by six on Monday, but no guarantee, so I don't know that I'm willing to chance that he'll be at the Alex by about 8:50, which is when he'd probably go on.  Also, he'd have no band rehearsal, no sound check, no nothing.  Trying to figure out what to do.

DR Jane - if you are looking up high calcium levels in cats on the internet, this is idiopathic, they don't think it's and indication of cancer or hypothyroidism (or is it hyperthyroidism?)

Elan - At least they didn't try to do it as "a pair of docs."

No, that's Allan Sherman's shtick ("and when Ben Casey meets Kildare/ That's called a paradox," from "One Hippopotami..." sheesh, but I'm just full of useless information today, aren't I?)

Had a long afternoon of viewing many different types of things.

I began with last night's BOSTON LEGAL. The Alan Shore-bewildered-by-a-woman thing is still as annoying as ever, but at least it wasn't focused on so much this week. Better were the respective cases that Alan and Jerry worked on.

I wish I liked these new lawyers more. But I find all of them lackluster replacements for the folks who aren't on the show any longer.

ginny, has the winner of the grand prize returned to work to receive her prize?

Not yet, DR Jane.  She works part time and won't be in again until next week.

When I started playing back SVU, I realized it was a rerun from last season, so I quickly deleted it.

Next, I began watching the new collection of Pixar short subjects. There are 13 included on the disc. All but two can be found on previous Pixar releases of their films as bonus features. All but one of these shorts contains some kind of commentary, most of which are quite interesting. All of the shorts are well worth watching and show the development of the animation software that drives the company.

(Three of these shorts won Oscars and two others were nominated. In the commentaries, only once is the fact that the short won an Oscar mentioned. Clearly to these folks, the work is everything.)

In the bonus feature section, there's a nice little mini-history of Pixar which I found really informative. There were also four little bits done for SESAME STREET using the Luxo and Luxo, Jr. lamps to explain concepts to young kids.

Next, I put in the new remastered transfer of Alister Sim in SCROOGE. First, for curiosity sake, I went to the weirdly manipulated "widescreen" version of the film. They've stretched it and cut off the top and bottom of the frame to fashion such a version. Some of it looked OK, but in close-ups, the tops of heads routinely got lopped off.

A new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack has been fashioned for the movie. Sadly, they've made the rears (which contain music and sound effects) louder than the center channel where the dialog resides, so I was glad that the original mono track was there to listen to.

The new full frame transfer looks as good as I've ever seen SCROOGE look, but there are still errant scratches and other aged-related problems there.

After about 30 minutes of SCROOGE, I flipped over and quickly skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Yes, the gay characters were there, but the storyline was most disappointing. They did not appear in the previews for tomorrow.

Is there a Yiddish word for "bitch"?

i'm not familiar with this word

"Chaleria (khal-air-re-ah) A nasty, shrewish, somewhat psychotic woman, prone to wild outbursts of anger. Basically, a bitch."

That is, perhaps, a bit too extreme for what I need.

Perhaps something along the lines of annoying/meddlesome/manipulative?  Any words for that?

I've heard "Streisand" used, but I'm not sure of the etymology.

Grand Prize - the anime character

Best librarian stereotype-busting costume - a hippie

Least recognizable - ET

Best last minute/lowest budget costume - Catcher & the Rye

Best repurposing of a household item - Plunger Queen

Best literary character - spider (from Charlotte's Web)

We had a costume contest also!  I came as a Lauren Jackson (from the Seattle Storm Women's Basketball team) fan!  I have my "LJ for MVP 2007" T-shirt (and she actually won!) and a card that says "LJ for MVP 2007," and an autogrphed photo of her.  I got here too late, so I couldn't be part of the contest. :P

Anyway, our winners were:

Literary:  Indiana Jones...he had an Indian Jones book, too!
Scariest:  a wicked witch (with blackened tooth and green skin)
Funniest and also Most Creative:  a girl Edith came dressed as her father, Ted, who also works here!  It was very good!
Overall Best:  The Bride of Frankenstein

I don't think anyone had a camera. :-\

Plotka-macher: a gossipy troublemaker; the person who can't wait to tell nasty tales about other people. Far worse than a mere yenta, the malicious plotka-macher takes pleasure in stirring up a wasp's nest, causing bad feelings among people, being the bearer of scandalous news. They are not above telling lies to foment ill-feelings and break up relationships. (Think Nancy Marchand's character, Livia, on The Sopranos)
