It's very quiet here in the office.

No one but me as of this moment.

Sorry to disagree with you, DR Ron Pulliam, about Ellen Pompeo, but I like the self-absorbed and moody character she plays and I think she does it very well.

I find the new Dempsey love interest singularly lacking in personal charisma and there isn't any sexual chemistry with him that I can detect. He and Pompeo do have it.

On again, off again, on again, off again.  Their relationship can go nowhere on the show.  Oh, they can rekindle the inexplicable lust the writers provide them from time to time, but last night you could see in Dempsey's eyes that his character isn't interested in going where Meredith has finally decided they should go.

I think the other girl IS sexy...and he and she look GOOD together.  I think Pompeo is the antithesis of sexy.

Good morning, everyone.

I've been doing cleaning and laundry this morning. We have our share of Evil Eyes here, but none of them help out.

I hope this offer concerning the deadline comes to fruition, so we'll have to see, and, of course, I worry that when a job ends that I'll never work again.

I really enjoyed last night's discussion started by Edi about her  Mercer interview. True HHW fashion: one person starts a colorful story, then other DRs chime in with their own witticisms. Kudos to Edi, Fred, Cillia.

Isn't it GREAT when things fall into place?

I've spent the past several days lining things up, making notes, trying to prepare "contingency" packages for various co-workers concerning things that would likely arise in my absence.  I assured them the solutions to getting them done would be simple.

No sooner would I finish notes on how to handle something than the "something" would come in early and allow me to do it.

Today, the final piece fell into place, so to speak, and the last invoice I expected to see for December arrived this morning.  It will be processed and out the door by noon.

A Board of Supervisors action that would require our Fed-Exing some leases to a landlord for signature fell into place last night.  I have the leases and FedEx will pick them up before 5 p.m.

The only thing I have left to do is to script my voice mail message to cover all the possible things people might want to hear when they call the office (70% of my phone calls are "wrong numbers" -- and always for the same things.  I have a ready reference for referring folks to the correct offices and I incorporate those numbers/situations into my holiday voice mail).

One-stop shopping, that's what I am!

I have a kitchen sink that requires George's handiness.

How about December 29th, George?  Can you fly down and install a new kitchen faucet?

Congrats to RON on his splendid fitness scores.

I flashed back to my annual Navy PT tests for a second there, Jeanne.

And then I recalled I'd crowed about my lab tests!

THANKS!

Is this the Power-Tierney "Razor's Edge"?  Fantastic Alfred Newman score....especially that theme that plays under the scenes between Larry and Isabel.

The latter movie is unbelievably wonderful.  I LOVE "The Barefoot Contessa".

Questions about Kindle - what is different between it and other eBook readers and eBooks?  For example, I know one of our dear readers read one of the Kritzer books as an eBook on one of those palm pilots or machines you carry with you.  Is any book on amazon available?  For example, MY books?  Do you get the covers?  What does it cost to download at $25 book?  If there's a paperback AND a hardcover, I assume you can download the cheaper of the two?

Well, the HUGE rainstorm of last night produced 0 inches of rain, just some damp streets.  These weather people should be put out to pasture, but, no, they just continue to give misinformation and collect large salaries.

Not only was there no huge rainstorm (as promised), the sun is now trying to peek through what are rapidly disappearing gray skies.

Yes on point #1. I've been watching a lot of Gene Tierney lately. I think she's just gorgeous and is my favorite of the actresses of that era. She reminds me a lot of my Aunt Margaret, another dark-haired beauty. I don't recall if I've mentioned Margaret in DR Jeanne's Stories of Her Family. Margaret was one of the early aviators--married a pilot and became one herself. She and her husband, Bob Blair, had a flying school and taught many stars to fly. This was in the days when stars still did their own stunts. Both Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart were among the students, and both became good friends. Margaret was a very lovely person and a strong role model for me.

I have much respect for Somerset Maughum's writing. I enjoyed it that he put himself in a work of fiction. It made me wonder how much of the story is actually fiction. Anyone have any info here?

I've never seen BAREFOOT CONTESSA, another of the Hollywood classics that I somehow missed. (There were many.)

BK, here's the Newsweek cover story that I mentioned earlier:

The Future of Reading

As I understand it, the big difference between the gizmo your friend has and the Kindle is the connectivity.  Books are transmitted like cell phone calls, not downloaded to a computer and then uploaded to a reading device.
