With two hours of prime time left and absolutely nothing of interest on TV for me, I went ahead and pulled out the last of the Varda films in the set - VAGABOND. It's the longest of the four films - 106 minutes which certainly isn't long by modern standards.
It's a very melancholy story. A young girl is found dead in a ditch, and we then trace the last three weeks of her life leading up to the death. She's a gypsy, living off her wits and the kindness of strangers, and we get to meet quite a few strangers during the running time - some nice and some not so nice. Still, you know she's coming to a bad end, so it's like a march toward the gallows, and it's a slow, increasingly depressing march. Glad I saw it, but I'm sure I'd never want to watch it again.
