Something I knew but had forgotten:  Larry Kert, Broadway's original Tony from West Side Story is the brother of singer Anita Ellis.....well, I guess...WAS the brother of singer Anita Ellis.

From MBarnum:
Quote
Just saw that John Phillip Law died yesterday in Los Angeles at age 70...
I remember him mainly from starring in THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD which my brother Allen took my little brother Dan and I to see in 1974, but others may recall him better in BARBARELLA or DANGER: DIABOLIK.

Have you not seen THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING? :o  He was so cute in that.

Well, I've unpacked my luggage, sorted my laundry, gone through my mail, and showered and shaved as well.

I have to head out to run some errands - as well as just to stretch my legs.  And I think I'm gonna peek into the Barnes & Noble at Lincoln Square to see what the crowd is like at Kerry Butler's CD signing and mini-concert.

There seems to be a surge in unsolicited phone fundraising. I'm on the Do Not Call list but it seems to do little good. I don't have a "relationship" with any of the nonprofit orgs or the for profit business that have suddenly started calling and when you mention the Do Not Call list some of them just laugh as you hang up. Caller ID is my friend and I now ignore all calls if I don't know the number or name.

My sister doesn't have caller ID, but she has it set up that if a caller's caller ID is "restricted" or "unavailable" or something like that, it won't go through at all.  You have to hang up and dial *86 (I think) first, then redial the number to get through.

That's FUNAI, all right!   ;)

I have to admit I have an ANCIENT Funai VCR in my bedroom which has worked flawlessly for at least 15 years. Of course, nowadays, it doesn't get much use.

My brother had some gadget on his phone for awhile that could tell if the call was a recorded message & not accept the call.  After awhile he didn't need it anymore.

DR Ben the “do not call” list does not keep you safe from politicians or non-profit organizations.

MattH - I said clearly I wasn't criticizing - but I think in DVD reviewing when a DVD has been out before it's nice to know what the differences are.

Of course it's nice to know, and in every single case where I had a previous release (most recent example - the Indiana Jones films), I have done comparisons in my reviews. But it isn't practical to expect it on every double dip release, even of classics. As I said, one just can't have everything, and I certainly don't have everything (much as I'd like to).

I listened to the Coppola/Scorsese commentary on THE THIEF OF BAGDAD this afternoon. Not nearly as interesting as the Bruce Eder commentary though, of course, Scorsese is much more into describing the techniques of shots and so on whereas Eder concentrated on the personalities making in the film. Glad to have both, but if I had only one to pick, I'd pick Eder's.

I listened to a bit of the isolated score and effects track. Nice recording and nice to hear that wonderful music apart from the talking. Rozsa has always been one of my favorites.

I went on to disc 2 and watched the first documentary on special effects in films with Harryhausen, Muren, and Barron. I was afraid they were going to talk in generalities (or in Ray's case about his own films) instead of talking specifically about THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, but eventually they got around to specifics in the movie.

TV Reminders:

Season finales tonight for:

SMALLVILLE

SUPERNATURAL

MY NAME IS EARL

THE OFFICE

CSI

And also on tap tonight and not to be missed:

UGLY BETTY

GREY'S ANATOMY

LOST

What a night!

I don't watch any of the shows that are having their season finales tonight, but the ABC line-up is where I'll be!  But I need to watch the last two episodes of "Lost" first. :-\ THEN, I'll watch tonight's episode.  I'm caught up with "Ugly Betty" and "Grey's Anatomy," though.

And I had JUST enough time to squeeze in THE LION HAS WINGS, the 1939 propaganda film Korda made between the London and Hollywood filming schedules. Boy, not something I'd want to ever watch again (I wish they had licensed the Steve Reeves THIEF OF BAGDAD instead), but some interesting validation about why England had to go to war, and the fun use of real actors like Ralph Richardson and Merle Oberon into the documentary footage.

I have to admit that I'm relieved some of these are finishing up their seasons tonight. Thursday night is just TOO jam packed with shows, and trying to stay up with them all is daunting.

I was thinking this morning about which shows I'll drop from my viewing next season. (I dropped WITHOUT A TRACE and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER last year).

I'm leaning right now toward dropping both CSI and CSI: MIAMI as well as BOSTON LEGAL next year. (BOSTON LEGAL has already announced that next year will be its last year, but I may not hang around any longer.)

I can't remember about whom it was said, and it probably was a mean and unjustified comment, but Frank Rich said about an actor that you couldn't imagine him being the toast of one continent, let alone two.

EDIT:  Never mind, I got it wrong.  It was the toast of two sexes, not continents, and it was about an actor I think is great, so never mind.

Jane!

My DH and I went coming home from dinner last night (celebrating our 14th anniversary) and saw a woman walking her dog down our street. As we pulled into the driveway, I hopped out of the car---I was sure it was a Burnese. (My DH thought it was a bulldog!)

Sure enough, it was a Burnese puppy named Buckley. He was SO soft...his fur was like cotton! And he had one blue eye!

I told our neighbor about Sherlock and she said that it was a genetic trait common to that breed, and she was glad because she got a good deal since the breeder couldn't breed him.

I picked up the manuscript and have already finished entering the fixes - she caught some lulus, too - missed apostrophes, added words that shouldn't have been there, missing words that should have been there - I have ten tiny things to run by muse Margaret, just to get her opinion, and then we'll be done and I'll send out the manuscript for the dust jacket blurbs.  Grant and I will begin work on Monday - very exciting.

Jane is too kind to criticise - but not I

It's "Bernese" - Berne -as in the Swiss city
