TOD: The best thing about summer (besides watching butterflies, dragonflies, lizards and monsoon rain) is summer fruit. I usually just put it on my cereal.

I'm on a plan with Con Edison, our supplier of gas & electricity, for a monthly payment over the year based on what I spent the last year. My bill this month is $22 higher than last month. I assume this means that I, and every other Manhattan client, is paying for a con Ed screwup somewhere!

Larry, I'm on that same plan. I haven't received my bill yet but I heard on the news that even if you're on a plan the summer bills will be higher this year. I'm not quite sure how they get away with it but that's the news from Com Ed.

...I've already had my eggs (over-easy) and English muffin (whole wheat), and I'm in the process of finishing up a surprisingly good Navel orange (just to tie it into the Topic of the Day).

*And I topped my eggs with a couple of teaspoons of the tomatillo salsa I bought last week.  Sooooooo good.

Con Ed has already figured in the overall increase for the coming winter months since that percentage has already been decided.  Yes, your bill - and ours - was higher this month, but (hopefully) that will ease the sting of the bills from November-February.

Well, Rita herself has never admitted that it's true, but every OTHER authority on the film validates that information, particularly on that song.

I was going to mention when I posted about my favorite and least favorite fruit that it's gotten too expensive for me to buy in the grocery store. The famers' market is SO far away, and I don't want to spend money on gas just to save a few cents a pound on fruit, so I've done without much fresh fruit this summer.

Now, I'm going to head downstairs to check the mail, tidy up a few things, maybe install that PS3 firmware upgrade, and then start fixing some lunch.

Anthony is safe and sound in Chicago after a 14.5 hour drive. He left here at 6am (5am Chicago time) and arrived in Chicago around 7:30 (Chicago time). He stopped to eat and get gas (he brought food with him). He will play with his cousin today and leave Chicago tomorrow for Wisconsin (2 hours away).

Thanks for all the vibes for him. He's safe and sound and ready to act.

I'm about to go out for my play date with my doggie.

Love fruit. It's funny what people like and don't like. I love apricots, big juicy ones from the greenmarket. You split them in half, throw away the pit and yum, yum, yum. There's nothin' like fresh pinapple in my book. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE blueberries. I think they are one of my favorite fruits. I can eat them by the handful. I guess I'm just a contrarian  ;)

My least favorite fruit is a delicious apple. They don't taste very delicious to me. Other apple varieties are much more flavorful and fun. I also don't much care for leechee nuts. I've had them both un-processed and processed (from a can with syrup). Yuck.

Another reason not to clean the house

-Which is also a reason not to get obsessive about using products like Purel and anti-bacterial soap.  Yes, they help kill the "bad stuff", but they also kill the "good stuff".

I forget which show I was working on at the time, but there seemed to be a higher number of germ-o-phobes in the cast than usual.  Almost everyone had a portable bottle of Purel in their bags, and they had also requested boxes of anti-bacterial Kleenex, and soap for the bathrooms.  Well...

There was one guy in the cast who would always turn down the squirt of Purel whenever it was offered to him.  "I'm keeping my good germs."  Of  course, this ended up causing some concern among some of the cast members. "Well, if you get sick, then end up passing it on to one of us..."  So... Guess who was the only person in the cast not to get sick or call out during the entire run of the show?  ;)

DR Jose, I was at the county health department clinic last week. Interesting that I felt an overwhelming need to use Purell at the health department.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I really do like all sorts of fruit, however, I guess I would have to say I'm really partial to berries, strawberries and blueberries in particular.  I remember a few weeks ago walking through the Union Square Green Market, and one of the stands was offering samples of their strawberries.  As soon as I bit into it, I knew that this was most definitely not a supermarket shelf strawberry.  It was so sweet, so flavorful, so juicy.  -And it was a nice deep red color all the way to the center - like strawberries are supposed to be.  I would have bought a pint then and there if I was able to head home right away, but since I was still out and about... Ah, well...

*And there were some incredible blueberries at the green market in Rockefeller Center yesterday too.

Well, I have a feeling I'd want to use Purell there too, as well as a bag of anti-bacterial wipes.

As for the Topic of the Day (Part 2)...

Summer peaches... Hmmmm... -And if the rains weren't about to move in right now, I'd probably be heading down to the stand at Columbia University to pick up a couple right now.  -WOW! The skies have really gotten dark over the past hour or so - it looks almost like "night" right now outside.  :-\  In any case...

Cherries... Although, finding some really good sweet and/or sour ones seems to get harder each year.

Watermelon....  :)  -And usually with a very light sprinkle of salt on the wedge/chunk.

As for tzatziki...

DR Jennifer - Sour cream was used as a semi-decent replacement for thicker, Greek style yogurts before those types of yogurts became more readily available this side of the Atlantic.  Next time, just get a small container of the Greek stuff - even the non-fat stuff tastes fatty :) - and give it a try.  *Plus, the live cultures in the yogurt are better for you than the ones in sour cream.

My mom used to make tzatziki - one of her food purveyors at the hospital started featuring Greek foods, and she started trying and experimenting with a couple of things.  It was the tzatziki that seemed to stick with her.  She started using it on everything.  And I mean everything!  Thankfully, that phase passed.  -Then she went onto her "cilantro-pickle relish sauce" phase... :-\   Moving on...

Yes, ideally, you should use a thick, strained yogurt, however, using "regular" yogurt works too (in a pinch).  A big part of the consistency of tzatziki comes from how watery your cucumbers are.  I would usually shred and/or finely dice them, then let them drain in a sieve for a bit - maybe even give them a gentle squeeze in a towel - before adding them to the yogurt.

DR SWW - As for the whey from the yogurt...  Just drink it.  Or if you happen to be making some bread...

*I'd be more exact with my suggestions, but I can't seem to remember what I have used the whey for before.  Hmm... ???

DR George - So... Next time you buy a small container of the Greek-style Honey Yogurt... -Was this the Fage container with the small little cup of honey next to it?  Or something pre-mixed?  In any case...  Next time, now that's there no surprise element involved, just enjoy it as is.  Don't thin it down.  It's meant to be thick, creamy, and savored.

*And if you can top it with some fresh fruit and/or granola, all the better!

As for the Topic of the Day (Part 3)...

If I end up buying more fruit at the market than planned, I will usually bake up a very simple crostata, fruit tart...  -And, yes, I cheat and use the pre-made pie crusts from the grocery store.  In any case...

Just place the pie crust on a cookie sheet, then sprinkle it lightly with some sugar, maybe even some cinnamon.  Chop, dice up your fruit - stone fruits work particularly well, although berries do too.  Place the fruit in the middle of the pie crust.  Sprinkle the fruit with some more sugar if you like, and, if you feel like gilding the lily a bit, then dot it with a few pats of butter and/or a squirt of fresh lemon juice.  Gather up the side of the pie crust around the fruit to form a "crust", just to hold everything in while it bakes.  Pop the whole thing in a pre-heated oven, 400 degrees, and bake until the crust is a golden brown, and the fruit has started to release it's juices and bubble.

Serve with vanilla ice cream, of course!  :)

I most certainly do NOT use Greek-style yogurt when dressing fruit salads.  For that I simply grab a thingie of Yoplait Key Lime yogurt and stir it in with the fruit.

I've always been partial to mixing in a few teaspoons of brown sugar, and a dash of vanilla into some plain yogurt and/or sour cream.  Works great as a dip or dressing.

Can anybody who watches TORCHWOOD confirm that the season that just ended in the US was season 2?

I am pretty sure that the season i saw last year was season 1 (since that policewoman girl was introduced to the team).

Well season 2 is starting here this friday.

Yeah!
