Well, my Evil Cat, Mosby the Grey Ghost, conspired with the Dead Dogs That Have Gone Before...Hotspur, Humbug, and the most recently staunch old Cully...and with The Lovely Wife to bestow upon me a treasure trove of gifties after midnight last night for Dad's Day. This morning The Lovely Wife cooked me a fullsome breakie and tonight has a great dinner planned....after a relaxing dunk in the jacuzzi where we shall imbibe champagne. Pretty good Father's Day for one who has sired no children (for which he is enternally grateful).

YES! To all those extolling virtues and talents of Charles Laughton. I echo all those choices echoed by other as well as his directorial triumph with NIGHT OF THE HUNTER. My fav CL's are ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, SPARTACUS, and HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (which is not only a brilliant performance, but a brilliant, meticulous film that not only gives us a great story but a great historical depiction of an age). I used to do a pretty good half-assed impersonation of Laughton's Witness for the P line: "In fact, Mrs. Vole, are you not a chronic and habitual LIAR!"

Another miserably hot, sticky day in the SOuth. Not quite as hot as yesterday, but who's quibbling about four or five degrees difference when things are so humid. Ugh!

I've always been a little torn about Laughton's Claudius in the aborted I CLAUDIUS film. Perhaps if we hadn't seen Derek Jacobi do it so magnificently, Laughton's few scenes (and the struggles he was going though to get them) wouldn't seem like also-rans. Too bad the didn't just continue filming and just replace Merle Oberon.

Happy Father's Day, one and all. I hope it is a good day for those who are fathers, as well as for those who have fathers worth honoring.

It is very HOT here in Tacoma, at least for us. it has been in the high 80s all weekend and is expected to remain so though Wednesday. The rain should arrive just in time for next weekend's Taste of Tacoma -- that infamous celebration that keeps me a prisoner in my own apartment one weekend a year!

In fact, it is so hot, that my M & Ms (peanut butter, of course) are melting in my hand, and not in my mouth.

MattH -- I realize that 89 degrees with 27% humidity does not sound so bad to you, but to those of us on the western side of Washington State, it is a sure sign of Global Warming!

Charles Laughton....my favorite performances have been mentioned.

Witness for the Prosecution especially was impressive to me....first saw it when I was about 11 years old...on television of course.

The Big Clock - first seen when shown by Frances Farmer on her afternoon television program.

I think my favorite though...is in Otto Preminger's Advise and Consent, as a ruthless senator controlling the confirmation process. As I got older, and understood the political process more - I was even more impressed that an Englishman would have such an understanding of such a man, a Southern Senator - and our politics. The whole cast was great...and Laughton's manipulations of everybody was delicious.

I'm sure for Washington, that is VERY warm, TCB. There's nothing here that's the least bit atypical weather-wise. It's like this every year.

And I grew up in a house without air conditioning. I really don't know how we managed except I guess none of us was used to it being anything except humid in the summer, so we slept in a puddle of sweat every night.

Good Afternoon!

Back from my walk... Still a gorgeous day up here! (DR MattH)

Back from practicing... I went ahead and headed up to school. Unforunately, when I got there someone was already in my teacher's studio, but, thankfully, the department gave me a key to the grand piano practice studio so I was able to practice in there. Unfortunately, my music wasn't back, but it's only Sunday, so... I did about two hours today. More scales - added B-flat and D (I'm working my "outwards" in the "circle of fifths" - adding a sharp and a flat scale each day for now) *(I know that won't make sense to some people on here, but if it does...). And I added arpeggios today too, which were not as bad as I thought they would be. After the technique portion of my session, I went ahead and went through the tricky part of the "Hello, Young Lovers" transcription - not that difficult once I picked it apart for a while. I also settled on three or four Chopin preludes. I figured the brevity of the preludes would make them easier to learn over the next few weeks - and kind of boost my confidence in a sense since I would be learning complete pieces. I tried to find a Beethoven sonata, but after reading through a couple, I just decided to hold off on any "major structures" until later. Then it was back to the apartment...

Back from my second walk... After stopping at the apartment, I went ahead and took my usual Carytown jaunt. Since it was/is quite a nice day here, there were a lot of people out and about - but not so many that the sidewalks were crowded. -And there were actually quite a few head-turners walking today too.

On the return trip back up Cary Street, I stopped in the nice independent bookstore and picked up a copy of today's New York Times. And I also went back to Bev's and got a hot fudge sundae with Rocky Road ice cream.

And now I'm here posting on HHW!

It's been a good day so far...

But I still I want my music back!

-And I did step in some gum today... ah, well...

I went on a lovely walk down by the waterfront in Tacoma this morning. It was just what I needed, a bit of fresh air and some gorgeous scenery.

**HELP NEEDED FROM SOMEONE MORE TECHNOLOGICALLY SAVVY THAN I**

I promised a dear friend of mind that I would tape the special on King Arthur that's showing tonight on the History channel. The only hitch to that is that I haven't the faintest idea how to go about doing this. I have a VCR, I have a digital cable box, I have a TV, and I have a cable to connect the VCR to the TV. Beyond that, I have no idea what to do. Anybody able to help?? I would be forever grateful!

I have grand news, Dear Readers--Senora Lavadora wasn't at the laundromat today! She must have been celebrating Father's Day with her family and I say that's just fine by me.

While I was away doing laundry I stopped by the local electronics store (always a baaaad idea.) While I was there I bought some new blank CDs and a digital voice recorder so I could record my practice sessions and my upcoming rehearsals with DR MusicGuy in Chicago. I will tell you this, Dear Readers--it is a harrowing thing we do when we first listen to ourselves sing. Oh my gosh, I think I sound horrid. Just HORRID! My vibrato is too fast in some places, too slow in others...and nonexistent in other instances! My pitch in a few spots was off. Not that horrible, "oh, that poor thing is tone-deaf" kind of way, but off in that "that doesn't sound quite right to me" off by a quarter-tone kinda way. I have some major work to do by next Saturday (our first performance). This will be a very helpful (and painful) tool for me to have, and it's a tax write-off, so I decided to splurge on it. I think it was $60 or so. Not too terrible. And it's tiny!

Hmmmmm....DR Ann connect the cable to the OUT connection on your tv and the IN connection on the VCR. Turn on your tv to the channel the special is on and do a test....tape a bit and then try to see if it worked.

If not, make sure the VCR is on channel three and try again.

Ann, assuming that nothing is hooked up and you need to use the cable box, connect the cable from the wall into the cable box, then connect the cable box into your VCR, then the VCR to your TV. This will, unfortunately, make it so that you can only tape what you're watching, but it's the simplest process. Once everything is hooked up (and it all works), put your VCR onto channel 3, tune your cable box to the History Channel (here in Olympia it's 37), then set your VCR to tape the correct time, but TAPE CHANNEL 3! Before the show comes on, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CABLE BOX IS TURNED ON AND IS ON THE CORRECT CHANNEL!! If it's not, you'll tape a whole bunch of nothing. Even though you're taping channel three, the TV signal is coming from the cable box, which you remembered to TURN ON AND TUNE TO THE CORRECT CHANNEL, right?

OR I was planning on taping it, also. I could just send you a copy! Send me private message. Any other questions?

I am very tired and need to go soak my feet.

After brunch, I had no plans but ended up going to a street festival downtown with my mom. It went on and on and I think we walked for at least 3 hours. Well needless to say my feet hurt by the time we were leaving.

There were a lot of interesting things. But I ended up only making one purchase, a white crystal ring that was a perfect match for a necklace I already have.

And re: singing live in movie musicals.

I prefer it. I hate lip-synching. Most people cannot do it properly and it just becomes obvious that they are not singing. I hate it in music videos, I hate it in concerts and I'm happy that Kevin Kline wanted to sing his parts live.
