Lots of different Broadway related vocalist and concept albums as I am putting together a cabaret act for two friends. Have several already.
Have several already...CDs or friends?

Jose: I think the other restaurant that claims the invention of the French Dip Sandwich is The Original Pantry Cafe.  It's currently owned by former mayor Richard Reardon.

That's not quite the case.  Cole's P.E. Buffet is the other restaurant that claims invention of the sandwich.  "P.E." stands for "Pacific Electric" and the restaurant is housed in the Pacific Electric Building, which at one time was the terminus for Los Angeles' long-gone red streetcars.

Each time I've been to Cole's, it's never been crowded, while each time I've been to Phillipe's, it's been packed.  In my humble opinion (IMHO, in internet lingo), Phillipe's puts out a superior product.

What The Pantry is known for, beyond its ownership by the politician who of late has taken to browbeating little girls and its gargantuan portions, is that it has never closed, even when it moved to a new location.  Except, that is, the one time the health department shut it down.

That wouldn't count DRJAY - being a forced closure...LOL.

What is this famous breakdown MR BK is talking about?

The casting breakdown on the online casting breakdown services.  I'm so annoyed about this three hour delay I can't even see straight.  We should have had fifty or sixty submissions for each category by now and we've got ten instead.

From Slate:
Watching Ken Jennings play is like witnessing any great athlete in top form: He's the Michael Jordan of trivia, the Seabiscuit of geekdom. Note his systematic habit of moving down the categories vertically, one by one, rather than skipping around the board. His nearly preternatural ability to land on the hidden Daily Doubles. His obscure betting tactics, which, as near as I can divine, are inspired by an obsessive-compulsive need to end each day's winnings with a round figure. His habit of adding some thematic je ne sais quoi to his answers (which, this being Jeopardy!, are of course phrased as questions.) If the topic is a foreign country, he'll answer in that country's accent, and in answer to one clue about hip-hop music, the ultra-white Ken memorably responded, "What is rap, yo?"
What is Slate thinking?

"Note his systematic habit of moving down the categories vertically, one by one, rather than skipping around the board"

Yes, I've noted that habit in about 95% of the players.

"His nearly preternatural ability to land on the hidden Daily Doubles."

As he's giving the most correct answers, he gets to pick the next question.  Naturally, that gives him, by far, the best chance of landing on Daily Doubles - nothing preternatural about that.  It's just the odds.

"His habit of adding some thematic je ne sais quoi to his answers "

Well, I don't know what that is.   ;)

in the tape player:
I'm listening to A Stephen Sondheim Evening and two tapes of shows that I don't think are commercially available (correct me if I'm wrong):
Herringbone, the one-man musical by Skip Kennon and Ellen Fitzhugh
Spilt Milk - the only musical comedy cabaret revue The New Yorker singled out for praise in 1993.

My 1986 Tercel went into the shop this morning. The mechanic just phoned to say, "Dan, the Ferrari's ready." He sure enjoyed that one.

DR Jay if you're looking for any columns go to broadwaystars.  It makes it very easy to find the NY Post and NYTimes articles.

There is this article from today:

I was just talking to my agent and told him the story of my "reversed name" for the screening invitation. He laughed and said, "That's nothing. They probably have it that way in the onscreen credits."

LOL DiT - EVERYONE is a comic!

DRPANNI....I can see it now:

Disney Walt presents Funicello Annette in The Dog Shaggy!

And don't forget Mr Mario Cantone will have his own one-man show starting in October (I think) at the Cort Theatre.

Back from a HOT afternoon of sunning, swimming, and working. The sunning and swimming I could handle, but carting a bunch of heavy boxes up a driveway to set someone's stuff out for a yard sale is NOT my idea of a fun summer afternoon. I was trying to be a friend, but it was TRYING!

Anyway, the work got done and the swim was refreshing, but I'm glad to be home.

And speaking of wanting to yell at someone.

I needed to check something online in my bank account.  I had never done it online before, so I had to create a password.

Anyhow it asked me a bunch of questions then said that one of my answers was wrong (my mom's maiden name). Now it WASN'T wrong.  So it said to call a 1-800 #.

Now I know the woman was trying to be cautious.  But she was literally driving me crazy.

I had my bank card and a check with me.  But apparently they need 3 pieces of information (not including easy stuff like birth dates ...).  She was asking questions that I couldn't answer, because I didn't have any bank paperwork with me.

Finally she asked when the last transaction was that I made and for how much.  Luckily it was today!

But man, I was so frustrated.  Wouldn't it just have been easier for her to put the correct maiden name in my file!

:(

Jennifer reminds me of a weird story from yesterday...
There were, as shown in my photo of yesterday, posters up outside the ballroom of past Humanitas winners, one group photo for each of 30 years. So I'm standing looking at my photo from 11 years ago and this woman walks up beside me and says to her companion, "There I am!" and points to the woman beside me in the picture! Now what are the chances of that? 30 photos, hudreds of people milling about. And I've never seen that woman before or since. (It turns out she was - and still is - Barbara Hall who created and writes/produces JOAN OF ARCADIA. - That's why seeing Jennifer on the board reminded me of the story.)

We are ready to go to Portland on the weekend of August 21st.  All I need to do is know is the day, time and place over that weekend and I will, hopefully, book the house sitter.

MBarnum great you can slip away for awhile.

George what day are you thinking of?  What are the hours of the Road Show?

Ann where is Jed?  We haven’t had a response from him yet.  Are you still planning to go?

I don’t have email from TCB-wish I had been here when he was.  I will try writing him.

Am I correct that just leaves JMK?

I just used a drive-through ATM at my bank and noticed something incredibly curious.  At this drive-through ATM are user aids in Braille.

Jane - I'm still planning to go, without question.  I'd venture a guess and say that Jed is also planning on it, but he's been mysteriously absent from the online world the past day or so, so I'm not sure.  I am sure he'll post when he gets a chance :)  (hint hint, Jed)

Off to put in THE DAY OF THE LOCUST now. Will report later tonight on opinions.

A new episode of MONK tonight is also something I'm looking forward to.

Jane - not about the August 21st date, but we have often spoken of going to a HHW gathering if we were able, and I'm fairly certain that he has nothing going on the weekend of the 21st, so I'd say I'm 99% certain we can count him in :)
