Elmore, THE RECKONING I want to see.  The source material sounds interesting as does the other book by Unsworth, THE SONG OF KINGS.  Sounds like my kind of stuff.

From the 1957 Capitol LP:

joe bushkin is a slender, exuberant man, a pianist, composer and arranger of superb talents and impeccable taste....Sinatra said, "One of the things I hated to leave when I quit the Dorsey band was the piano playing of Joe Bushkin."

Bushkin wrote his first song "Oh Look at Me Now" while with the Dorsey band, which became Sinatra''s first hit....

He succeeded David Rose as Music director of "Winged Victory."  In 1949 he became an actor.

He appeared onstage in Garson Kanin's THE RAT RACE playing a muscian and writing the incidental music.

When it came to his attention that 1957 would signalize Berlin's fiftieth anniversary as a composer, Bushkin undertook the task of selecting fifty of the master's greatest songs....and recording them for Capitol.

Review from me:  It is terrific piano album!  ;D

Good Afternoon!

Another bright, sunny day here in Houston!  And, yes, I'm still inside my hotel room.  Well, I did sleep in again today, so... but I do have to make a post office run in a little bit, so...

DR PennyO - Yes, I will still be "between gigs" come March, so...  We'll definitely discuss amongst ourselves later over a knosh.  :)

I have been staring at DR JRand's avatar for some time now.  (I'm not complaining, just stating a fact.)

It got me wondering....

Do you (any of you, DRs) think the dust jacket of Miss Farmer's WILL THERE REALLY BE A MORNING? might have been the inspiration for DEByrd's iconic FOLLIES poster?

I know that stop on the Washington Metro very well. It's the stop for the National Zoo. Granted I haven't been there for years, but in the 80 when People Express and New York Air were around, especially in 1984 when I wasn't working much, we were down in DC very often and we visited the zoo many times.

DR Matthew - Glad to know you're making your way through the maze.  And I know what you mean about "degreed players".  There really is a different set of skills and mindset needed for playing shows.  Thankfully, I have those skills and mindset - tangible and intangible.  And I always get a slight kick out of "classical players" who seem to be "slumming" when they take a show gig... and then can't play the book!  HA!

DRCharlesPogue, I'm having a hard time getting into MORALITY PLAY, but I loved THE SONG OF THE KINGS, which takes place primarily on the shore of Aulis while the Greeks are waiting for the wind to sail.  It's a very smart book, finding an intelligent solution to Iphigeneia's arrival in Tauris after she was sacrificed by her father.

I think there are similarities, but wasn't Miss Farmer's book published in 1972?  FOLLIES is 1970 or 71?

Yes, Frances' book was published in May, 1972.  The jacket design is credited to Ben Feder, Inc.

It is quite a disturbing photo - I am sure DRJMK can give you more of its history.  But it was taken sometime in 57-58 (I think) during the first part of her comeback!  :'(

Ah.  I knew she died around '70, so I thought the possibilty was there. (I thought the book was published prior to her death.)

Perhaps FOLLIES was the inspiration for the dust jacket, then.

Yippee!!!

I just spoke with one of the most friendly* hotel reservations agents I've ever had the pleasure to deal with, and she was able to book me and Steve for three nights in NYC next week! So.. We'll now be there from Tuesday afternoon through Friday morning!  -Which is what I was trying for in the first place, but everything seems to be "booked" next weekend.  Is there something coming into town?  Or is it just the start of the Fall tourist/fashion-shopping season in NYC?  -So we'll now have two full days in NYC instead of just one "weekend".  YIPPEE!!!!

*Friendly in a New York sort of friendly if you know what I mean.  She seemed a little rough around the edges, but she kept asking me some additional questions: Have you stayed with us before?  Are you with a business?... OH!  You were booked here with a theatre company?  Well, then... I'll go ahead and pass on the discounted corporate for you.  THANK YOU!!

YIPPEE!!!

*Of course, this extra day in NYC just means one more day before I have to return to my "real life" back home in Richmond. ;)

Could have been DR STUART.  Frances lay dying in the hospital as Lois Kibbee was sweating over the book.  When Frances died, her friend Jean demanded that Kibbee turn over all materials to her, and she finished the book.  It was edited by Vivian Vance's husband John Dodds and released two years after Frances died (August, 1970) as "the autobiography BY..." even though after the second paperback printing it was published as "the autobiography OF..."  and in fact the TV Movie tie-in paperback edition was published under the Dell "Fiction" imprint rather than "Non Fiction."

I may have asked this before, but is Lois Kibbee any relation to the great character actor, Guy Kibbee?

OH!  And speaking of my "real life" back in Richmond...

It seems that once I get back there on Monday (before turning right around and heading to NYC Tuesay morning), I will be coming home to:

-A "new" bathroom:  new floor (no more patchy tile work), new vanity and a new sink!
-A repaired front porch - there were two floor boards that had holes(!) in them.
-A new screen door for the back door.
-A new door for the back door!  The old was starting to droop really bad on it's hinges.  *Which means we can now keep the back door "open" during the cooler weather since we now have a screen door!  Yippee!

Hopefully, the mice have not returned, but even if they had/have... ah, well..  My roommate hasn't spotted anything, so... <fingers-crossed>

And I do have to give my roommate, Christopher, some sort of "props" for having to deal with the bathroom deconstruction/reconstruction.  He actually had to go out of town last week, and we were hoping the landlord would schedule the work for the time when both of us were away.  Of course, the work started the second day I was here in Houston.  The dust, apparently, was horrible!  But he made do, and managed not to fall through the planks that were laid down in the bathroom while the work was being done.  -And, thankfully, our upstairs neighbor let him use her bathroom when needed.

OK - I do need to get to the post office...

Laters...

Yes indeed, Lois had just gotten the gig on THE EDGE OF NIGHT when she was working on the book.  Her father was actor Milton Kibbee and her uncle was Guy Kibbee.

She was a bit astonished to be met in Indianapolis by a drunk gray haired woman wearing a man's overcoat.  It took her awhile to figure out it was Frances - and she said she only hoped someone else was driving them home from the airport....no such luck.

Hmmm, in my vcr I know I have THE SINGING DETECTIVE, last night's The OC, Wednesday's West Wing, and probably a couple of other things.

Btw, my sis is loving (read: hating me) for all the movies I'm asking her to tape.  Tomorrow night is the premiere for Calendar Girls (so I asked her to tape it for my mom who desperately wants to see it).  Tonight is the premiere of Big Fish (which I really want to see). And tomorrow is also the premiere for The Secretary (which I've been curious about).

Sorry to be E&T until now. Another morning rehearsal and then the usual afternoon schedule until getting on-line.

Thanks to DR Ben for the review of BROOKLYN. Your comments seem to parallel what others who have seen it have said. I think this show, like RENT and AIDA, is just not for me despite the talent of the performers. I didn't enjoy either of those musicals though I know plenty of other people who think they're great. I'd rather listen to BELLS ARE RINGING.
