DR MBarnum - For International calling cards... Try 7-11 - just ask the clerk. Also try some ethnic grocery stores.

Be sure to read the fine print on the back of the cards for any possible "hidden" charges. Some companies/cards may offer a great per minute rate, but their connection charge may be a bit high.

If you want to go with a "name brand", AT&T does offer international calling cards. I see them at drugstores (CVS, Walgreen's, Eckerd, etc.), Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, etc. You've probably seen them many times, but since you haven't needed one, you might have not really noticed them if you know what I mean.

Monday, December 13, 2004 - SAN FRANCISCO — Google Inc. is trying to establish an online reading room for five major libraries by scanning stacks of hard-to-find books into its widely used Internet search engine.

The ambitious initiative announced late Monday gives Mountain View-based Google the right to index material from the New York Public Library as well as libraries at four universities Harvard, Stanford, Michigan and Oxford in England.

The Michigan and Stanford libraries are the only two so far to agree to submit all their material to Google's scanners.

The New York library is allowing Google to include a small portion of its books no longer covered by copyright while Harvard is confining its participation to 40,000 volumes so it can gauge how well the process works. Oxford wants Google to scan all its books originally published before 1901.

Last Sunday evening Game Show Network had an online-interactive game for $$ and prizes. I didn't win any $$ but the top 300 scorers of each show one a prize. I don't know how many people were playing online, but I did win one of the 1st Place prizes (the only other prize offered) for each show.

I just read something that made me laugh out loud. I was perusing another board and someone posted some bad reviews for Phantom of the Opera from England. For about the eighth time, this woman comes on - she's seen the film twice, once at a screening and once on a theater screen - and she raves on about it again - how it's great and she loves it, and how it's going to sell out, etc. Only in this post, she finally reveals that she's the moderator of the Warner Bros. chat board. Suddenly, it all makes sense - attending screenings and premieres. I mean, honestly.

Re: making long distance calls

Do you guys in the US have the same thing we have here in Montreal? I use it to make all my long distance calls and it is VERY cheap.

It's a number that you dial before you dial the long distance number. And the charges go right to your regular phone bill.

I believe I have seen commercials for something similar on US networks.

You dial something like 10-10-20 and then the number. And it's very cheap.

Larry, I found the problem. Right after the last slash, you typed a letter O where there should be a number zero.

Now that buggaboo has been with us ever since computers were invented. When I was first a programmer in my college days, we all wrote Ø for the letter, so the typists wouldn't get confused. So, for example, the computer language was FØRTRAN. A few years later the convention switched, and Ø was the numeral. And just this week, several of my students had trouble because Microsoft Word turned all their " quotes into curly “ and ” quotes in their code, and Microsoft Internet Explorer wouldn't recognize them!

Anyway, here is the correct link.

That Guardian article was posted here a few days ago--by Der Brucer, I think. Of course the headline is total BS. This guy talks like he has the President's ear, but that certainly doesn't mean Bush--for all I dislike about him--would be stupid enough to publicly back such a bill. Oh, he might say Gerald Allen is a "great American" and a "fine conservative", but empty phrases are about as far as he would go.

Interestingly enough, I've seen this article posted on FreeRepublic dot com, the arch-conservative web site that I haunt, and about 90% of the people there think Allen is a total looney. After all, most conservatives have read the Constitution. And then there are the 10% who favor it because, "I don't want sodomites teaching sodomy to my children."

All in all, it's a nice ploy to get the guy some publicity--like the NY candidate who called for a Bruce Sprinsteen boycott. She got her name in newspapers from Warsaw to Peking, only because the Boss has a name, and she used it for her 15 minutes of fame.

Trust me, this guy's bill will never get out of committee, even in Alabama.
