DR MBarnum - For International calling cards... Try 7-11 - just ask the clerk.  Also try some ethnic grocery stores.

Be sure to read the fine print on the back of the cards for any possible "hidden" charges.  Some companies/cards may offer a great per minute rate, but their connection charge may be a bit high.

If you want to go with a "name brand", AT&T does offer international calling cards.  I see them at drugstores (CVS, Walgreen's, Eckerd, etc.), Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Costco, etc.  You've probably seen them many times, but since you haven't needed one, you might have not really noticed them if you know what I mean.

As for DVDs... Hmm... Off the top of my head:

Elaine Stritch: At Liberty (although I think this was released last year)
In America
Ed Wood
Broadway: The Golden Age
The Lion King

...And that's all I've bought this year... And, of course, I haven't watched any of them yet, so...

Ah, well...

Well, I need to start packing things up and loading them in the car...  Until I'm back up in Fairfax...

Noticeably missing was perennial favorite Mel Gibson, whose controversial blockbuster, "The Passion of the Christ," was shut out of the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, which NBC will telecast on Sunday, Jan. 16. Also bypassed were Tom Cruise, another Globe darling, who gave an unflinching portrayal of a hired assassin in "Collateral," and Kevin Bacon, who portrayed a paroled child molester in "The Woodsman."

The AP reports:

Quote
Rare books may come to Google
Google working with libraries to scan millions of works.
By Associated Press

Monday, December 13, 2004 - SAN FRANCISCO — Google Inc. is trying to establish an online reading room for five major libraries by scanning stacks of hard-to-find books into its widely used Internet search engine.

The ambitious initiative announced late Monday gives Mountain View-based Google the right to index material from the New York Public Library as well as libraries at four universities Harvard, Stanford, Michigan and Oxford in England.

The Michigan and Stanford libraries are the only two so far to agree to submit all their material to Google's scanners.

The New York library is allowing Google to include a small portion of its books no longer covered by copyright while Harvard is confining its participation to 40,000 volumes so it can gauge how well the process works. Oxford wants Google to scan all its books originally published before 1901.

Wonder when they will include the Pogue and Kimmel libraries?

Thanks for the calling card info...I will check K-mart and Walgreen's and see what they have. I probably have seen them but just never paid any attention! Sort of like those gift certificate cards that are all over the place at Target! LOL!

More problems with fashion:

From an AP Report :

Quote
La. Judge Suspended for Wearing BlackfaceTuesday, December 14, 2004

NEW ORLEANS — A judge who wore blackface makeup, handcuffs and a jail jumpsuit at a Halloween party will be suspended for six months, the Louisiana Supreme Court (search) ruled Monday.

The justices voted 5-2 to suspend Judge Timothy Ellender (search) for a year without pay for dishonoring his position, but to defer half of that penalty. Ellender will lose more than $50,000 in pay, one judge noted.

Ellender, who is white, testified the costumes worn by him and his wife — she was dressed as a policewoman — were meant only as a joke to show he was her prisoner. The party's host, Ellender's brother-in-law, was dressed as Buckwheat.

Public censure and a $50,000 fine for a Halloween costume worn at a private party!

The sky is blue, the time is nine-twenty
But I didn't just wake up - I've been up plenty
Reading the posts - watching the clock
Trying to see which posts to mock
Now, I'll just put on some little old frock
And skip to my lou, my darling.

Can you also skip to my bud, my darling?

Oh....Broadway:The Golden Years!  How could I forget?

Last Sunday evening Game Show Network had an online-interactive game for $$ and prizes.  I didn't win any $$ but the top 300 scorers of each show one a prize.  I don't know how many people were playing online, but I did win one of the 1st Place prizes (the only other prize offered) for each show.

WEAKEST LINK - Spiderman 2 DVD!
WIN BEN STEIN'S MONEY - GSN T-shirt
MILLIONAIRE - GSN T-shirt

I expect them all to arrive sometime in February!   LOL

Riddle of the Day:

What was (or should have been) the headline last month when members of the PLO were negotiating with their leader's widow to find his hidden millions? (Billions?)

Here is your naughty John Barrowman picture for the day.  That's Caspar Van Dien on the left and Yasmine Bleeth in the middle.

Yes, this is a family site, but it was a publicity photo for a family TV show.  Well, maybe not so family...

I just read something that made me laugh out loud.  I was perusing another board and someone posted some bad reviews for Phantom of the Opera from England.  For about the eighth time, this woman comes on - she's seen the film twice, once at a screening and once on a theater screen - and she raves on about it again - how it's great and she loves it, and how it's going to sell out, etc.  Only in this post, she finally reveals that she's the moderator of the Warner Bros. chat board.  Suddenly, it all makes sense - attending screenings and premieres.  I mean, honestly.

Happy B-day, Tom of Oz!!!

DR Jose, I think you and I either had the same dream about your arm falling asleep, or it really happened to both of us last night.  I woke up and I felt that I had fought a battle, by arms, my shoulders, they all ached.  It was a tough night to find a comfortable position, I suppose.

OF COURSE it was a family show.  I did a cross-check on IMBD.  It was called Titans, and everyone in the cast had the same last name!

(Although, frankly, "Titans" seems a slight overstatement.   8))

I'll have to come back to the TOD.  I've got our DVD database on the other computer, and I need to check that first to figure out what came out this year.

But LOTRIII, which we don't have yet, will have a saved space on my list.

Re: making long distance calls

Do you guys in the US have the same thing we have here in Montreal?  I use it to make all my long distance calls and it is VERY cheap.

It's a number that you dial before you dial the long distance number.  And the charges go right to your regular phone bill.

I believe I have seen commercials for something similar on US networks.

You dial something like 10-10-20 and then the number. And it's very cheap.

Larry, I found the problem.  Right after the last slash, you typed a letter O where there should be a number zero.

Now that buggaboo has been with us ever since computers were invented.  When I was first a programmer in my college days, we all wrote Ø for the letter, so the typists wouldn't get confused.  So, for example, the computer language was FØRTRAN.  A few years later the convention switched, and Ø was the numeral.  And just this week, several of my students had trouble because Microsoft Word turned all their " quotes into curly “ and ” quotes in their code, and Microsoft Internet Explorer wouldn't recognize them!

Anyway, here is the correct link.

DR Elmore:

That Guardian article was posted here a few days ago--by Der Brucer, I think.  Of course the headline is total BS.  This guy talks like he has the President's ear, but that certainly doesn't mean Bush--for all I dislike about him--would be stupid enough to publicly back such a bill.  Oh, he might say Gerald Allen is a "great American" and a "fine conservative", but empty phrases are about as far as he would go.

Interestingly enough, I've seen this article posted on FreeRepublic dot com, the arch-conservative web site that I haunt, and about 90% of the people there think Allen is a total looney.  After all, most conservatives have read the Constitution.  And then there are the 10% who favor it because, "I don't want sodomites teaching sodomy to my children."

All in all, it's a nice ploy to get the guy some publicity--like the NY candidate who called for a Bruce Sprinsteen boycott.  She got her name in newspapers from Warsaw to Peking, only because the Boss has a name, and she used it for her 15 minutes of fame.

Trust me, this guy's bill will never get out of committee, even in Alabama.
