And just this week, several of my students had trouble because Microsoft Word turned all their " quotes into curly “ and ” quotes in their code, and Microsoft Internet Explorer wouldn't recognize them!

The "curly quotes" option is a user controllable Auto-Correct option; unfortunately, for your students, the default setting is to make the conversion.

Here is how they can configure their software:

Quote
Change curly quotes to straight quotes and vice versa
Microsoft Word automatically changes straight quotation marks ( ' or " ) to curly (smart or typographer's) quotes (  or  ) as you type.

To turn this feature on or off:
1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options, and then click the AutoFormat As You Type tab.

2. Under Replace as you type, select or clear the "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" check box.

Note  You can find and replace all instances of single or double curly quotes with straight quotes in your document. To do this, clear the "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" check box on the AutoFormat As You Type tab. On the Edit menu, click Replace. In both the Find what and Replace with boxes, type ' or ", and then click Find Next or Replace All.

To replace all straight quotes with curly quotes, select the "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes" check box, and repeat the find and replace procedure.

Isn't that just too special?

The Christmas Special Christmas Special on BRAVO has some great clips....on again at 1 am EST, or so.

Do they still put a lighted "tree" on top of the Capitol Records tower?

Ah yes DRPANNI - the old girl in the pit trick!  Works everytime!

DRDANISE you didn't have to stop.....let the police figure it out.  Watch the personals ads for a week or so, if they need a witness they will post it there.

Poor Panni!  I hope you landed on something soft.  That sounds worse then getting hit on the nose.

Thanks, Jrand!  I wondered if I had done the right thing.  BTW, if someone had been hurt, I would have stopped, no question.   But when I saw them both get out of their vehicles (and did they look mad!) I thought I could just go.  I just wasn't sure if that was what I should do.

As for looking in the personels.  If they run an ad, it will have to be in the Sunday paper.   I don't get the paper during the week--just the Sunday paper for the TV guide and the ads.

'Twas a quiet, lazy afternoon.
I was settled in bed with Lindsey Davis' "Silver Pigs"; all the "family" was gathered about, some gazing out of the window at out feasting squirrels and birds. Suddenly, there arouse a humongous outroar - a cacophony of barking - the homestead had been invaded!

All I can say, is that kitty better skeedaddel before I let the dogs loose!

Riddle of the Day:

What was (or should have been) the headline last month when members of the PLO were negotiating with their leader's widow to find his hidden millions? (Billions?)

QUE SERA, SUHA?

And then there's that famous quote Suha made when she and Arafat were still a'courtin':

"Yasser Arafat's my baby!  No, sir, I don't mean maybe!"

So happy you're enjoying HOUSE, DR Jane. It's such an involving medical mystery show with really interesting characters. And we have a new episode tonight where House makes a mistake, so I've read.

I told Keith we had to watch HOUSE since we like many of the same shows.  The timing just wasn’t right when we first began TIVOing it.  I set TIVO to also record reruns so we can catch the first episode.  The ending of the last episode was a riot, in such a subtle way.

HOUSE make a mistake  ;D

Well, I went and did something that I thought I would never do.  You know that infomercial that shills the Dean Martin Show DVDs.  I actually called up and ordered a few.  I was laughing so much at the clips they were showing during the infomercial that I figured that the DVDs would be worth owning.

The next thing you know I'll be ordering the Jack LaLanne juicer.

Hisaki, my father had a woman by the name of Dorothy  who worked for him for over 45 years.  Her parents and aunts and uncles were from Japan.  Every January 1st we go to her parents house for a Japanese food feast.

Keith said he forwarded email to me at the lap top.  I think it went back to his computer and he can't see it while he is playing a computer game.

I have dishes to wash, laundry waiting for me and various work to do.

And a double-pack that has both of Richard Lester's 3 and 4 Musketeers.
I need to look for that; those films came out during my college days, and there was a group of us that went to the first repeatedly.

Technically, the article der B linked to.  He doesn't write 'em, doesn't make 'em up.  (For what it's worth, some of the political boards list them as his articles, too.  They actually say "Der B wrote..." which frustrates him like heck.)

No comment needed (except - "Get me outta here!" - meaning the human race, if this is what it's coming to...)

Fox calls for 'Daddy' ...VARIETY 12/14/04 (excerpted)
Gameshow will bow as a 90-minute special Jan. 3

By JOSEF ADALIAN
Father's Day will come early next year on Fox.

Net is finally taking the wraps off "Who's Your Daddy?," the potentially controversial paternity gameshow first revealed last summer by rival web head Jeff Zucker.
"Daddy" will bow as a 90-minute special Monday, Jan. 3, at 8 p.m.; seven other episodes ordered will air later in the season as a weekly series or a series of specials.

"Daddy" takes an adopted woman who's searching for her father and puts her in a classic reality show elimination scenario. She's introduced to eight men. One is her real dad; the other seven are fakes, each of whose goal is to trick the woman into thinking they're her father.

If the woman successfully identifies her dad after three elimination rounds, she gets up to $100,000. If she doesn't, one of the seven faux papas -- all of whom are contestants -- get the coincoin.

Either way, each self-contained episode ends with a four-hanky reunion of father and child.

"It's the most emotional show we've ever put on the air," said Fox reality chief Mike DarnellMike Darnell. "I guarantee you: If you have any heart, you'll be bawling at the end of the show."

Zucker told a room full of reporters about "Daddy" and "My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss" as a form of retaliation against Fox, which Zucker felt was stealing his reality show ideas.

While all involved in "Daddy" are aware of its "What's My Line"-like deception, skein could still draw fire because the seven fake daddies all try to deceive the adopted woman. As a result, it's possible the woman could form a bond with a fake dad -- or grow to dislike her true father before she even knows who he is.

"Sometimes you'll wince at what happens," Darnell admitted, noting that in situations where the woman has ended up eliminating her dad, "she feels terrible."

"We're making people play a game to find one another," Darnell added. "But the game aspect takes a back seat to the emotions."

Now, might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  There is no disappearing during the Countdown to Christmas.
I've been getting dinner together, that's where I've been.  Beef Bourgonion, or however that's spelled, the Anthony Bourdain recipe this time.  Not as winey as the first time I tried this dish (another recipe), much beefier.  And I tossed in some muchrooms, which he doesn't call for.  And LOTS of leftovers!

Okay, class, I know it's finals week, and you have other classes to study for.  But you still haven't answered this one.  And it will be on your final:

The PLO were negotiating with their late leader's widow to reveal where her husband had squirreled away all his money.  And I said, "_______  _________  __ ________."

I've seen those kind of machines around but I'm afraid it would not do a correct count.  So I sit and count and roll my coins.   People have given me a coin counting machine as a gift.  I still don't trust them and you know what?  I'm right.  Sometimes the machine does not do a correct count.
Those machines DO count accurately, but keep part of the count for the owners of the machine.  They have to make money, of course, but it does seem scammy to me.
