Continued thanks for the birthday wishes, to TCB and again to George.

Some twisted reasoning: Since my dear friend Julie can't celebrate with me until Sunday, I'm going to keep celebrating right on through Sunday, so at least this year, George, we'll both be celebrating our birthdays on May 5th. There may be some kind of logic there, but we'd probably have to send a search team out looking for it.

I had thought if I got something interesting DVD-wise in the mail, I'd watch it this afternoon, but since I got NO mail today, I went ahead with my plans to watch BURNT OFFERINGS.

As a Dan Curtis-haunted house story, it's par for the course, more like a made-for-TV movie except with big stars of the time (Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Bette Davis, Eileen Heckhart, Burgess Meredith) and thus was shown in theaters.

But this MGM enhanced DVD is one of the weirdest transfers. I guess this is the way the movie was filmed (I did see it in theaters, but it was too long ago for me to remember clearly), but all the exteriors are very soft focus, almost as if they're being filmed through gauze. Some of the interiors are soft, too, and then some are sharp. All of it looks very dated on DVD, however.

DR FJL, my mother-in-law started celebrating her 90th birthday last December 14, the day after her 89th. Sometimes I think that's what's keeping her alive.

I'm sure some mothers-in-law are able to do this because they take great pleasure in how much it irks their daughters-in-law.

SOme good and bad news. I read today that ABC's COMMANDER -IN-CHIEF has been pulled from the ABC schedule for the rest of May. The show had three more episodes to air this season, and now, they're in limbo. ABC has said they may air during the summer, but this is decidedly not good news for the show's chances of being renewed for another season.

On the other hand, BOSTON LEGAL has gotten a renewal for another season. ABC is shaking up its schedule next year, so it may not be back on Tuesday, but it WILL be back.

Back from an excellent meeting -- except for the fact that I couldn't find my car for about half an hour (or more) afterwards. The meeting was in the skyscraper at the foot of the hill leading up to Universal Studios. The parking structure is in a separate building. So I parked - noted the Section - 2G - and went to my meeting. An hour later I got on the elevator, rode to the main level and transferred to the Parking Structure elevator and Pressed 2. So far, so good. I get out, find Section 2G. No car. I walked the area several times. No car. By now I'm thinking maybe my mind is playing tricks on me and it was 3G. So I go to area 3G. Altogether now - NO CAR! So I ask someone who looks like he works there. Is there another area 2G here? Nope. I walk around for another 15 minutes. Even get back on the elevator. Resulting in - one, two, three - NO CAR!!
So I ask someone else. This time a woman. And we all know that women are more logical. (Except me, perhaps.) This woman finally asks me the right question: "Do you work here?" When I tell her that I most certainly do not, she says, "Oh! Then you parked in the Star Area." The what??? I get back in the elevator - and, indeed, there's one button with a star. I press it, get out and discover VISITORS PARKING. I amble over to section 2G of VISITORS PARKING and (altogether now) FIND MY CAR!
Now may I just ask how you're supposed to know The Secret of the Star? (The title of my next screenplay.)
...Needless to say, I was exhausted by the time I got home.

One other quick note. Yesterday I got the Prep Schedule for my opus which starts shooting in a few weeks. As I've said before, I've always wanted to write a 1940's style movie with tap dancing! And the dream has come true. (This is by no means a musical - but it takes place in 1943 and has a big tap production number and lots of 40's music.)
So, looking at the schedule made me smile with delight. Each day begins with the following notation:
"Tap rehearsal (Location TBD)"

I certainly meant to add Franklin Pangborn, too.

But there are still excellent character actors today who work all the time. It's just that there is no studio system putting them in 10-15 movies a year so that their faces, if not their names, become a part of our movie vocabularies.

However, there are certainly TV actors that one sees pop up in guest star roles continuously from show to show, network to network. Someone like Kevin Chamberlin is a prime example.

Penny - Do you remember Ed Weissman? We were having dinner with Ed and his partner Steve.

Re the names you mentioned - Small world all around. Skip and I are collaborating on a project with a wonderfully talented lady named Ellen Schwartz, and Ellen happens to be working on a different project with Jerry James.

And Skip's collaborated with David Spencer a number of times.

Did you know Skip at BMI?
