Glad I was here for the spelling bee tonight, 'cause on Tony night my mom and I will be in Normal, IL, visiting my DN (dear niece) Laura.  She was with me for DR PennyO's show in NYC last year.  I don't think Laura has a computer at home, so I may miss that partay.

I always thought that the Baroness gives up on the Captain too easily.  She should have used her connections in Berlin to try to force him to drop Maria and marry her.  It might have gotten her a solo number.

I guess it was poor Marion Marlowe's luck to not be dating Richard Rodgers in 1959!

"Dating"?  Is that what they called it back then?

How about "This Is How You Solve A Problem Like Maria"?

SPELLING BEE SPOILER

.
.
.

Okay first I had no idea that there were Canadians in the competition. I was very impressed with the girl from Edmonton (finola?).  And I was rooting for her to win.

I only watched the last 45 minutes. BUt it was quite exciting. And yes some of the words were VERY hard.

I missed when the brunette got back in (but they mentioned it in her interview).

I could not believe how fast those last two girls were spelling their words. Amazing.  Of the last 15 words. There were only a handful that I knew how to spell.

DR Jose, re: SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.  I'm not really that fond of this stage of the competition. I prefer watching them learn all the dances (i guess this year in vegas). And I love watching them draw pairings and dance styles.  I much prefer the couples dancing to when they each dance on their own.

The spelling bee is great television. Much better than the drivel usually broadcast.

Speaking of musicals, I watched the second disc in the BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL box tonight. I started with the fourth program dealing with the Golden Age and when it finished, I went back to the depression years (part three). ENjoyed seeing this again.

Then, I watched the four back-to-back episodes of THE OFFICE. Each one had hilarious and treasurable moments.

Today, the Television Critics Association made their anual nominations in the various categories, and THE OFFICE was the ONLY comedy nominated for Program of the Year. The other four nominees were all dramas: LOST, THE SOPRANOS, 24, and GREY'S ANATOMY.

Then I watched tonight's CSI episode, a rerun once again featuring Lady Heather. The show is/was the grisliest hour of CSI I've even seen, and I had to turn my eyes away from the screen on several occasions. I didn't remember how it ended so I stuck with it to the bitter end, but this is definitely one episode I won't be revisiting ever again. I'm thinking I must have been busy with something when it first aired because I remembered the general premise without remembering any of these horrendous details.

Then I started watching SOUNDER which I recorded off TCM the other day. Unless a new DVD has been issued of which I'm unaware, this film has always been pan and scanned on tape and DVD. This seems to be the only way to see it in its widescreen glory (it's Panavision). Will finish up with it tomorrow.

"It's terrific television."  Whudda thunk anyone would use such an expression?

I just finished watching Ozu's Good Morning, about which more later.  Will now start Whatever Happened To Baby Jane and I shall consciously avoid "terrific television" - the Tonys, however, I'll watch, but right here at haineshisway.com.  Don't need no stinking Actor's Fund gala to go hobnob in, when we have the smartest partay people in town.

The news said the house explosion could have been a gas leak.  Two guys in the basement had minor burns and the elderly lady upstairs got out ok.

A house on the next street burned to the ground a couple years ago. I could see the flames from my living room window. Very scary.

I don't know if I said this, but for his birthday and father's day, my brother, my sister and I got my dad installation and 3 months of high speed internet at his summer house.  He finally got it all installed tonight and he's surfing at warp speed.   Now there will be a little more peace as my mother doesn't have to yell at him to get off the phone line.

He is so excited. I love it
