Well, you've read the notes, you've planted your own tree, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just taking some dolls and then they'll be right along.

Well, I must admit that I haven't seen a noir film in probably ... ever (that I can remember). :-\

Unless I've seen some but just didn't know that they were called "noir" films.

The phone just rang. The phone ringing at 2 a.m. is never a good thing. So I should be glad it was a hang-up.

I don't know about vacuous.  I've heard of vac-u-jack, but I don't think that's the same thing.

I had an interesting day at work yesterday.  To begin with, I was asked to stay an extra couple of hours.  Someone called in to say she wasn't coming in to work, and the bosses needed to fill in her shift.  Good for the bosses that I'm easy.

But the good news was that, because I had an extra couple of hours I got to help a customer who really needed help.  She was in her mid-twenties, and distraught.  It was her first time using a WIC check, a government assistance for families to make sure that the mother and children are fed properly.  This particular young mother was feeling ashamed about having to rely on any kind of welfare, but had been hit with hard times.  Fortunately, I've become fairly good at working with WIC checks over the past year, and I believe that WIC is one of the best programs around, as it is very specific as to what foods are to be bought.  So I did a little hand-holding, reminding her that she was using the check to help her children, that sort of thing.  She left feeling a little more encouraged, I hope.

The next lady in line thanked me for being so nice.  It was good to have what I did be noticed, but I would have done it anyways.

And now it's time to dash off to work again.

Caught up with the posting for the past few days including watching the Mark Bakalor video. My quick review is this. I liked what I saw, but I don't think it works as a music video because I became so interested in the juggling that the song became secondary. I realized about 3 minutes or so into it that there was a song. Didn't hear any of the lyrics.

TOD: Don't have one.

From a few days ago. Fav T. Williams play. This Property Is Condemed. The first play I ever directed. Most people praised my radical interpretation of the play by casting an African American woman in the part. I never intended it to be "radical" I cast her because she was the best actress who auditioned for the role and never gave a second thought to the color of her skin (although other people must have).

or as it appeared in the novel and the film,

You've got to climb Mount Everest to reach the valley of the dolls. . .

BK knows just how much feeling I have for VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, thanks in part to our mutual arguments with a certain Joe Caps. . .

Speaking of Margaret Whiting, DR EvilTwin LITERALLY escorted Margaret and her hubby Jack Wrangler to the book signing of HEARTBREAKER the other night. . .Margaret had tales to tell and the conversation between the three of them flowed.  Alas, the conversation never turned to EvilTwin and Mr. Wrangler discussing HIS film career. . .

Good morning, all!  I've slept late aqnd now I'm planning my day:  NYPL is a definite must but I may cancel my trip to Toyland because there's been onlt one elevator in service that past few days and the traffic patterns to the 9th floor are ridiculous and claustrophobic.  I have a number here from "Lady of the Slipper" I can work on, so that may be what I deide to do.

DRtd, I'll never understand the Whiting-Wrangler marriage (I know more than I should about certain things), but they seem happy and they are both lovely and kind people.  I haven't seen Margaret since 1998, when I worked with her for a Frank Loesser concert, but she's a wonderful charming lady.

Obviously, they are quite good for each other, Margaret and Jack.  Ms. Janet told me that they are both charming and that Margaret is always stunningly beautiful and a class act all the way. . .perhaps, and not to be declasse, it's like the old Astaire-Rogers maxim in reverse:
She gives him class. . .well, you all know the rest. . . ;D

DRs Pogue and Jose, how could I have forgotten LAURA or THE MALTESE FALCON?  Two of my faves.

DR FJL, I think MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH is not a noir, but I've enjoyed several contemporary attempts:  BLOOD SIMPLE and THE LAST SEDUCTION.

I am not positive if THE RED HOUSE or NO MAN OF HER OWN (the Babs Stanwyck version)  count as noir or not...but I do like those along with MILDRED PIERCE.

India put out some interesting film noir in the 50s. POST BOX 999 is a very good Bollywood film noir.

Thanks, Jose. I'm looking forward to the trip. It sounds like the show is going well and everyone loves Anthony.

Enjoy the movie tonight! If I wasn't leaving for the airport at 5:30am I'd join you.

I will be incommunicado from Friday morning to early Monday evening. We don't have a laptop and Roanoke is not a hub of Internet cafes. I'll have to catch up on Monday evening when I return to the apartment.

Anthony has an audio clip of Judy singing I'll Plant My Own Tree. He will be disappointed to hear that it's not on the VOTD release. He was hoping to have a clean transfer. Oh, well.

It sounds like the Rufus Wainwright concert re-creating the 1961 Judy at Carnegie Hall concert was a success, although I must admit I had little desire to see it. It ran last night and again tonight. Lorna sang a duet with him last night. Liza was in the house (or so I heard) but didn't appear on stage. Joey was probably nowhere to be found.
