Good morning!

Hot, muggy, miserable. We didn't get the showers they predicted for yesterday. Maybe they'll arrive today.

Typical July weather.

DR JRand, did you say the wrong name last night in mentioning that Bernard Slade had died? Didn't you mean Barnard Hughes? I hadn't read anything about the death of Bernard Slade.

Reading Barnard Hughes' obit in today's paper, I knew he had won a Tony, of course, but I had forgotten that he had won an Emmy for a guest appearance on LOU GRANT. Good for him! He never got enough credit as a superb character actor.

Re GRAND PRIX. I remember as a kid thinking it was too long, but seeing the movie in a CInerama theater was stupendous.

I haven't bought the DVD yet. I saw that TCM was showing it this weekend at some point, and I've set my DVR to record it. After watching it again as an adult (have never seen it in all the years since seeing it in the 60s as a teenager completely uninterested in racing), I'll decide if I want to shell out $$$ on the DVD.

As for autographs, I have a very eclectic collection. From my youth I have folks like PAtty Duke, Brenda Lee, Bill Bixby, the Smothers Brothers. (Brenda Lee came through here in a tour of THE WIZARD OF OZ, and I went backstage to meet her. The others I got from publicists during their TV star days.)

Later on, I've gotten Ann Miller, Debbie Reynolds, Tony Randall, Christopher Meloni (several times), the original cast members of A CHORUS LINE who wrote the book ON THE LINE (a signing at the Drama Book Shop), Terrence McNally, and, most recently, Bruce Kimmel and Matthew Ashford.

Having lunch with friends today, but I'm still trying to make decisions about what to watch this afternoon.

I took a Hercule Poirot movie off the shelf - MURDER ON THE LINKS - which I've seen but have no recollection of as to the murderer. I may go with it this afternoon and early evening.

If any DVDs come in the mail (as they're supposed to), I may opt for one of them instead, say, THE BLACK SWAN.

Willie "Pops" Stargell was the guy I wrote to from gradeschool, in the same way Cillaliz wrote to LBJ. When he sent an autographed photo, it made me a Pittsburgh Pirates fan for life.

I also got Roddy McDowall's autograph when they gave him an honorary degree from Bowling Green. I asked him about his brief role as DJ Jr. in THE LOVED ONE, in fact.

TOD - The very first show I saw in NYC was Cabaret at the Imperial Theatre in June, 1967.  My souvenier program book is autographed by 4 of the 5 original cast members (all but Jill Haworth).  I took the same program to Cincinnati's Music Hall when Joel Grey toured there in a revival about 20 years later and he signed it again.  He was between the matinee and an evening performance and still had his MC makeup on.

Also, a program from a 1977 Middletown Symphony concert in which the featured performer was Cy Coleman.  He was so gracious afterward - signed my program and wrote down a phone number for me to call in case I had trouble getting tickets for his then-new show I Love My Wife the next week in NYC.

Rodzinski, in tomorrow's notes I will tell you what name is really being said every time Jonathan Winters says "Will" or "Blessed Reverand".  I will also mention some dialogue from the shooting script that didn't make the film, although if you watch the characters in the background of the scene in which the dialogue was supposed to occur, you'll suddenly see some "attitude" you've never noticed.

There were several overtly and hilarious gay scenes - this is the final shooting script I have (an original, which I got along with a first draft "outline" script) so there's a good chance these were shot.  Too bad none of that footage is on the DVD - since it was an MGM film now owned by Warners, who knows if it even exists, but who knows if the exalted "leaders" of Warners even looked for it or knew of its existence?  The gay scenes would have been mind-boggling for that era - one in a gay bar made me laugh out loud (occurs when Dennis Barlow is doing odd jobs - he's working as a server in a gay bar - in drag).

The Grand Prix disc has an interesting retrospective doc - not as poor as those things usually are on the Warners discs - has some really interesting backstage footage of the shoot, too.  James Garner takes part and tells this really interesting story of some store owner holding up the shoot because he wanted more money and how Garner berated him about it.  Then we SEE and HEAR the incident because someone shot it - that's the kind of stuff I like.

The only autograph I've ever gotten "in person" was Gerald McRaney ("Major Dad") whom I met in L.A. at an Armed Forces Television "do".

I do, however, collect autographs/signatures.

I have a nice assortment, IIDSSM (If I Do Say So Myself in internet lingo), of theater 'graphs (Sondheim, Styne, Merrill, Comden & Green, B. Cook, B. Harris, etc., etc.) movie composers (Alfred Newman, Hugo Friedhofer, Miklos Rozsa, Jerome Moross, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, etc.), lots of actors, some directors.

I'm not one to wait at the stage door for autographs after a show especially if it "stars" someone.  It was fun to wait for Cathy Rigby with my 5 year old niece after Peter Pan and I've waited for a few others.  But our recent coup was snagging all 5 autographs from the prodcution of Some Girl(s) in NYC. Imagine the likes of Eric McCormack and Fran Drescher coming out of the stage door of a theare in the Village.  It was scary.  Fran didn't sign much, but she did get our program.  It was just fun trying to nab these people as there were two possible doors they could exit the theatre.  It was the most crazy experience at a stage door that we've ever experienced.

I'm having the hardest time attaching a photo, someday I'll figure it out.

Sorry, but I've never collected autographs.

Not precisely true - he "collected" an autograph of Dick Van Dyke (on a paper napkin) when he was filming on the Queen Mary and gave it to me!

We both gathered signatures on items when we hosted stars at Long Beach's ICT - they include: Susan Egan, Maureen McGovern, Nell Carter, and Shelley Berman.

der Brucer (and I have an Angela Lansbury signed playbill from ST - LA production, somewhere)

Very interesting info, BK. Bought my copy of THE LOVED ONE yesterday. Wish there were more extras, but of course Tony Richardson was long gone before anyone thought of these commentary tracks. Would've been nice to hear Morse or Winters had to say. Or Haskell Wexler.

They did leave in that one odd scene where the coffins are filled with ladies, and Liberace pops out of one expectantly.
