Boy!  Is this weather horrible?  Last night, it got so bad; I had to get up and close the window and turn on the electric blanket!

TCB - I fly into Seattle on Thursday.

Skip has officially landed in Portland, Oregon, and I believe will be seeing HERRINGBONE in Vancouver, WA tonight.  Then he Amtraks to Seattle tomorrow to join LAST STARFIGHTER rehearsals, already in progress.

I don't think I have personally seen any flop musicals in person, unless you can count JEKYLL AND HYDE, although I did like Robert Cuccioli's performance.  I have, however, appeared in several productions of HIT musicals, that we managed to turn into flop productions.

I saw the pre-Broadway tour of J&H when it played in Seattle and I thought that it was quite good (SPOILER:  the scene where Lucy was killed was just riveting!!).  They made some changes to the show by the time it was videotaped so that what I saw on the video was a giant stinking pile of poop...just my opinion, of course. ;)

I guess you already told me that, Fred; but the brain seems to be the second thing to go!

The idea of today's topic is flop plays and musicals you've actually seen where you loved the show that was roundly panned by critics and other audience members.  For me, play would be Peter Barnes' Time Of The Barracudas.

The only show that I've seen (on Broadway in December, 1995) that didn't do well was certainly loved by the audience that was there...Swinging On a Star:  The Johnny Burke Musical.  I don't know what the reviews were like but I LOVED this!  It just didn't last very long.  The CD hadn't even been released, yet.  Here's the CD cover:

I just checked Amazon.com and the CD is out of print.  There are two sellers who have copies and they're $75 each!!  Who'da thunk it??  I guess I should hang on to my copy!! ;)

George - IIRC, SWINGING ON A STAR was nominated for the Tony for Best Musical.

Matt! You got off schedule??  I hope it was for some very fun reasons.  I do mean this in jest.  If only I could be as disciplined about cleaning as you are, my house would actually be all put away and clean...that would be amazing.

Yes, it was fun. I had folks in on Thursday to see PETER PAN on video and some other things also got watched, and I just didn't have time to do the cleaning that day before they arrived. (They got here a little after 5, and it is usually around 6-6:30 when I clean my room of the day. So, everything dropped back a day.)

Right now, I'm listening to the original cast recording of The Last Starfighter. ;D

Even though people didn't like Jekyl and Hyde. it ran for quite a long time, is it still considered a flop??

It was a financial flop. After playing almost 4 years, it still lost almost its entire investment.

The musicals I've seen in NYC that got bad reviews and flopped I generally didn't like at all (I HAD A BALL, HIGH SOCIETY, JECKYLL & HYDE).

Oh, I just thought of one I did like - THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (the original, not the revised version).

I watched another MEDIUM episode this afternoon. This was the one where the spirit of a deranged doctor from the 19th century was motivating doctors now to mutilate their young female patients. This was a particularly disturbing episode.

Since I watched the Mary Martin PETER PAN earlier this week, I thought I'd give Cathy Rigby equal time today. Didn't like the lip-synching. I'm assuming that she lip-synched in the theater, too, during regular performances not for TV cameras since she does such amazing tumbling routines during "I Gotta Crow" and "I'm Flying," and being able to sing would be next to impossible doing what she was doing. Impressive to watch, but it detracts a bit from the excitement of live theater, at least for me it does. I'm sure most in the audience didn't care at all.

Best friend John may come over tonight to watch TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE which I kept on the DVR for him to see. (They don't take Showtime.) If he doesn't come over, I'll probably watch OLIVER! tonight. I'm in the mood for a musical that isn't PETER PAN.

Heading out now to mow the grass. I was going to wait a little later, but I'm afraid we may have a shower (clouds are thickening a little bit), so better do it now.

My favourite flop musical is "Merrily". I love it in its original format. I don't think the revisals work as well.
I saw it performed by a young cast of non-professionals and found it to be totally satisfying as a piece of musical theatre.

I also enjoyed the original production of "The Card" which was very much a failure.

Last night's viewing here was "The Leopard".
Truly a case when film becomes a work of art. A gem of the cinema.

I've never been able to get through the Mary Martin "Peter Pan". I just don't "Get" Mary Martin.

When Martin Guerre played the Ahmanson in LA, I took a special trip down to see it.  The first act was really good, the second act fell on it's face within 5 minutes.

Please! such exageration - we saw it in LA as well, and the second act did not fall flat with 5 minutes! (6, minutes, Yes!)

Nobody seemed to enjoy the musical JAMES JOYCE'S THE DEAD as much as I did.

I dunno - how much is "much"?

Woody and I saw it in LA and both enjoyed it.
