Hmm... I just remembered that as of now I'm actually "off" the first week of October from Cabaret, so I guess I will be up in NYC that week. I was thinking I would be otherwise engaged that week with another project, but since that contract has yet to materialize... In any case, I was also think that would be a good time to rent a truck, and clear out my storage spaces in Richmond and Fairfax (ugh), and move it all up to the Big Apple. Finally!

-And maybe I'll just sit audit in the pit that night for The Drowsy Chaperone.

On the Sondheim listserv, someone posted THIS article about the Johnny Depp "Sweeney Todd" movie. In part, it says:

....Stephen Sondheim, the veteran composer, wants the actor to take a voice test before he blesses Depp as cinema’s latest Sweeney Todd.
The 76-year-old composer is concerned that Depp, who has played with rock bands since he was 13 and based his anti-hero Jack Sparrow on Keith Richards, the Rolling Stone, may be too “rock’n’roll” to play the murderous barber of Fleet Street.

Tim Burton, the London-based director behind the proposed film, has been praising Depp’s singing voice, but Sondheim needs to be convinced. The composer has said that he will not approve a cinematic version of his Broadway musical, which he describes as “virtually an opera”, if the main character has to mime rather than sing.

And Johnny Depp is just so skinny! I would think that a more sold physicality (for a lack of a better term) is needed for the role.

And it's about 1830 when the life span was about 55-60? If you're lucky. And he weighs how much? Sweeney's about 40 years old.

I think Tim Burton's the perfect director and I am already looking forward to this film.

Perhaps he'll be dubbed? We don't even know how much of the score will be cut. Perhaps he'll sing next to nothing?

Re the TOD - I don't know from cars.
I guess if I had a dreamcar - which I don't - it would be my new car. It's quite snazzy and does everything except write scripts for me. And it's a hybrid, so I'm doing my bit for the environment. I gave my old car - which wasn't all that old and had very low mileage - to my DD.

Here's the new car-car...
It has a navigation system which was very helpful today in coming home from a meeting. I just punched in "Home" and the nice lady who lives inside the engine told me exactly how to get there. And she never once yelled at me!

Back from the post office (everything is shipped and up to date), and from Mr. Geissman's house. I'm happy to report that Mr. Geissman has outdone himself with the cover of the new short story collection - it is, in a word, faboo, and in another word, magnificent and a total eye-catcher. I kept asking him to print it out and he kept doing other things and then he had to leave and it was too late. He's supposed to e-mail me the image in the morning, and I'm hoping to go over to his house and get a printout after my morning meeting. I couldn't be happier and I think everyone will love it.

The good meal I was hoping to have isn't happening. My dinner partner copped a plea of illness, and I was so hungry and fed up that I just stopped at MacDonald's and got some mediocre food to eat. Oh, well.

Three of the more booming baritone/bass voices in my experience have been Norman Treigle (may he rest in peace) - who was about 5'10 and weighed maybe a buck-oh-five; Justino Diaz - about 5'10 and maybe 140; and my ex, Charles Long, who back in the day, was 5'10 and weighed between 136-140 on a good day. Sam Ramey - another old pal, was/is about 5'11 and in HIS heyday, weighed probably 150. They all shared costumes at New York City Opera. They all played villains...

Any and all of those guys could have sung the sweet Bejeezus outa Sweeney. I don't know if Johnny Depp can sing, but I wouldn't question his dramatic/physical rightness for the role...

I’m tired, probably because I didn’t exercise today. Instead I got work done around the house & the carpets cleaned. I didn’t clean them, had the carpet guy come. I did move some of the furniture & guarded the outside doors he had to leave ajar-didn’t want any lizards to move in.

Jane - I would love to keep the mama cat inside and raise those kittens as house pets - if I had another month here I sure would. I have no idea when those babies will be born - I think gestation is 9 weeks - we could be three weeks or a month away. At which time, I'll be in LA... I have, from time to time, put 5 pounds of rice under the pump house when I leave, to keep mice coming back for more... a little rodent farm for mama cats...
