Re: last night's Big brother show.

DR Cillaliz i was not mad at the outcome. Although i was disappointed. At least will or janelle i could take winning. but to have boogie as the winner is just yuck.

I think i was much more disappointed yesterday during the day when i found out that boogie had won part 2 of hoh.

Btw, part 3 was SO lame. I can't believe they ask 5-6 stupid questions to determine such an important decision. They should do something really challenging.

Also, the only interesting thing that might have happened last night would have been if erika had won the hoh. I really wanted to see what she would have done (my gut says she might have kept her word to janelle).

I thought the car challenge was quite great to watch. Only thing is that if you looked closely you could definitely see that it was much harder for a woman. I mean janelle got all the answers correct yet boogie beat her by double the time.

The reason i hate a boogie and erika finale is because he played her like a fool. And she is a fool.  I was starting to like her last week when she got a brain and her and janelle took on chilltown. But i'm back to disliking her.

I can't even imagine how boring it will be to watch her and boogie in the house. Yuck.

And to make it worse, i think she is back with him.

Last night i wanted to puke because she was cuddling him and said, "oh we are the rob and amber of big brother allstars".

Wow is she nuts or what. Rob and amber loved each other. And boogie cannot stand her. When she sees the tapes she will probably go crazy.

There is no way she is going to win. Boogie is the winner.

Yuck.

I would have loved to see janelle or will win. But not boogie or erika.

Thanks again for all the birthday wishes.  I'll try to post more this year (I know some of you are saying "good" and others are saying "oh no").

VHS - The 3 Topper films that TCM broadcast the other morning.  So far they are not as funny as the TV series.

DVD - SAN FRANCISCO, further proof that when not saddled with Nelson, Jeanette was much easier to take.

CD - A 15 CD set of English and American pop music from the 30s to the early 50s.

Good morning, all!  I am in allergy hell this morning.  I slept late and all I can do is sneeze.

DR Der Brucer, thank you for reminding me of the Largo from ther 9th Symphony of Dvorak; I should have remembered it last night when I was ranting about CARMEN since one of my student piano books contained the Handel and Dvorak Largos, both of which I loved and played often.

The philistine CARMEN comment reminded me of other favorite musical comments of a similar nature:
PEANUTS' Lucy finding another young lady lounging on Schroder's piano and telling her if she's going to stay she'd better like Beethoven.  The young lady responds: "I'll have a small glass."
The London society lady at a dinner party trying to impress W. S. Gilbert with her love of music by asking him what dear BAYCH was composing these days.  Gilbert told her that dear BAYCH was currently decomposing.

DR William Lurie, I thought Jeannette had proved how wonderful she was in LOVE ME TONIGHT, long before Nelson.  Of course, Myrna Loy steals the film from her, but the whole cast is wonderful.

TOD:
DVD:  Jeeves & Wooster Season 2, The Opposite Sex
CD:  Liz Callaway, Guy Haines, Susan Egan, Mozart complete piano concerti
  VCR:  More Cheap Porn!

Good Morning, All and One.

Currently in my car, I am listening to  the cast CD's of "Starting Here, Starting Now" and "Birds of Paradise."   I had never heard "Birds of Pardise" until I ran across a lovely Chorus recording of "Imagining You" (which may have even been arranged by our beloved Elmore).  I love that version.  Unfortunately the show verions are not as pretty, and I'm not impressed with the rest of the score.  It might be a nice show, but the score does not stand on its own.  Oh no, it does not stand on its own.  It teeters precariously.  And if anyone knows about precarious teetering, it is I.

DR Elmore - here's another one for you, from that ill-conceived local production of Company in which I appeared shortly after you left town:  The jerk playing Harry explained that the line,  "Perhaps a piece of Mahler's" is a reference to (...wait for it...) candy.

DR Kerry, I'm sorry to hear that a chorus has been performing my arrangement of "Imagining You":  several years ago, someone with the San Francisco Men's Chorus computerized the arrangement with neither my knowledge nor the composer's and when I saw it - full of rewrites and wrong notes - I demanded all copies be destroyed.  Unless the chorus you heard performing it learned it from a photocopy of my handwritten score, I dread what they're singing and wonder if they ever paid me for its usage.  I'm glad you thought it was lovely; I just hope it was my authorized arrasngement.  Incidentally, as you already know, there is a huge difference in something conceived as an ensemble of seven actors and a large chorus.  I had to think about where the number was going chorally as opposed to what it was doing as an Act One finale.

As to the show BIRDS OF PARADISE, I saw about half the performances of its too-limited run at the Promenade Theatre, and I disagree with your feelings on the score.  I think it's a show that deserves productions, but it may be too smart for most audiences since it assumes the audience coming into the theatre has a working knowledge of Chekhov's SEAGULL, and I think David Evans' score is quite lovely.  Perhaps you'd think better of the score if you saw a production.

The cast for the original production had a lot of young actors who went places:  Barbara Walsh, Christa Moore, J K Simmons, Todd Graf, Donna Murphy.

I love "Starting Here, Starting Now" but one of the reasons I think it's so fantastic is the fact that it's a compilation of the best unknown Maltby and Shire at the time.  "Travel" what a great number.  Are you listening to the wonderful New York cast (incomplete) or the complete London recording which isn't as good?

OMG, it's like Elaine Stritch's explanation that she thought Mahler's was a bakery on the upper east side.

Not quite as cool this morning, but it's not supposed to get quite as warm today either. So, I guess it's a trade-off. Ah,well. . . .

I'm listening to The Most Happy Fella right now. I already listened to Grease (OCR) and Oh, Coward (thanks to former DR Jason). I also have A Grand Night for Singing (BK's recording), Little Me w/Sid Ceasar, Whoop-de-Doo (almost original cast recording as the CD says), When Pigs Fly (OCR) and Working (OCR).

We watched a movie last night with Paul Henreid, Eleanor Parker, John Garfield and Faye Emerson (among others) called Between Two Worlds. It was made in 1944 (IIRC) by Warner Brothers. Interesting plot and fun to see. Garfield was somewhat stagey and over the top but Faye Emerson was quite good. She had just married Elliot Roosevelt so apparently people flocked to the theatre to see a member of the Roosevelt family (even if only by marriage) in a movie.

Not much else on the DVD/VCR calendar.

I'm looking forward to the visits of various and sundried friends, such as Tom and Colin and a week before that some other friends from across the pond. The visitors will provide nice breaks from the drudgery of work.

Just got a call from best friend John who needs me to fetch and carry him on some errands when I'm out running my own errands this afternoon (his car is in the shop). No problem since he's fetched and carried me so much, but I will have less time for viewing stuff this afternoon.

Dear Esteemed, powerful, knowledgeable, humpy, and Elysian BK --

Good morrow to you on this PIK and KIP morning!  May your travels go without travail, and vice versa.

And you tell that Spirtas pup that I am taking note of his canoodling with "up" .....oh yes!

Can ANYONE supply me with a VHS or DVD of any segments of the Skip E. Lowe cable shows??  We have checked online, and can't find any info at all.

I better go now and see if DP Kerry is still teetering .

I was so disgusted with the outcome of Big Brother 7 last night (I learned the results on the message boards before it aired locally) that I watched PBS all evening...and found a series called "Monarchy" that was absolutely riveting.

Go, Erika!

Hope so! i can't take hot weather any more. Last trip to LA was weeks ago, when we suffered through temps above 110 for over a week. It's turned cool here - definitely autumnal. Trees turning red and gold, leaves falling. Now, if only it would rain, the salmon might have a chance.

DR Ben -- You have no idea what a frustration it was for me, when my recent travel plans made me go right through the NYC area, but didn't allow time to call you.

It would have been a real highpoint for me to be able to get together with you and the sparkling Ant, and have a nice dinner and a nice long visit.  I shall just have to make the next time work better.

If we could entice the remarkable Elmore to join us, that would be a great honor for me as well.  I have a very large amount of admiration and respect for his work!

I hope you and the Ant are doing well and staying happy.  I can't help but think of my New York friends as we get near to Sept. 11th, and I also hold an extra prayer and good thought for you all.

Dear MusicGuy, we look forward to your next trip to the Eastern Seaboard and a long catch up session. Eighth Avenue, where we had dinner the last time you were here, has changed quite a bit since your last visit. More restaurants are leaving to be replaced by interim high priced stores able to pay outrageous rents and willing to be kicked out when the landlord finds another suitable tenant willing to pay even higher rent.

I know that Larry would love to join us on a dinner outing. If Kerry can find the time to leave the oasis of Phoenix it would be a perfect evening.

BTW, I listen on Tuesdays to a BBC Radio show called The Organist Entertains. It's hosted by "Nigel Ogden, who presents a programme of popular organ recordings including classics, and standards." He has yet to play any of your recordings. I'll have to send him copies of your CDs so he can be introduced to your magic fingers  :D

DRs RLP, Jennifer, and Cillaliz,

I was also disgusted by BB7 last night...Will and Janelle should be sitting as the final two...they are the two best players.

Erika and Boogie do not deserve to win...and golly, but does Boogie not have enough ego to fill 3 BB houses!

That said, of the two players I hope Erika wins.

I saw BETWEEN TWO WORLDS when I was in high school and loved it. There was a version of it made in the early 30s as well, but with a different title.
