Ok, maybe I shouldn't find this funny, but the apartment that the plane crashed into in NYC was owned by the woman who got injured when the balloon in the Thanksgiving Day Parade got caught in a gust of wind.  I don't know who she is, but I don't think I'd want to be hanging around her!

...I'm not understanding why I would want to pay a crew for doing nothing.

Ask any B'Way producer about the Musicians union - he'll explain it all.

They're asking me to pay a seven person crew that basically will be doing nothing for us - either he's misunderstanding the way in which we're doing this, or I'm not understanding why I would want to pay a crew for doing nothing.

I've run into this from time to time with unions, where they want you to pay a "shadow" union member if you want to use your own people (or no people). It's their way to force you to use their crew. Maybe that's the case here?

Greg and I shot in St. Louis during the farm crisis. We were shooting in a union hall---some huge auditorium---and then when we went back out to the street to get cover shots, some union goon came over and started harassing me and demanding our tape. He said we should be hiring these shadows if we are going to shoot there. I was in a public place at this point and he had no right to get in my face (and he actually ripped the press pass off my neck and threatened me, calling me "little girl", etc.). It was obvious that I had 2 other men on my crew (they were busy shooting the exteriors and didn't know this was going on) and thought it was pretty cowardly of him just to go after me. I stood up to him (little did he know he was messin' with "Scissors" LOL!) but after he left my crew came back and I was shaking so hard I could barely function, out of rage and fear. We made a group decision to cut the rest of the shoot short.

When I worked for an orchestra, they would let me set the music stands and lights but we would still have to pay for the union crew. And some shows were only orchestrated for a small band but you would still pay as though you had the regulation sized orchestra for that hall. (I can't remember how many pieces it was at the Fox Theatre.) So people would come in and pick up their paycheck without playing a note. And I thought "How do I get *that* job?"

I think I figured out where bk got the idea for the last book cover:   How to Overcome Nymphomania
Quote

Thursday , October 12, 2006

Michelle and Brian Watters are hoping you will judge their books by their covers … but maybe that's because the covers are all they're selling.

Say you're stuck on a plane next to a chatty neighbor, and you want nothing more than to be left alone. Thanks to the Watters, you can just open up your hardback copy of "How to Murder a Complete Stranger … and Get Away With It" and odds are you'll get your wish.

The Ottawa couple is selling individual self-help book jackets sporting comical titles — and they're hoping readers with an active funny bone will help themselves, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reports.

Among their eccentric offerings are "How to Overcome Nymphomania" (sure to get you some dates), "Do-It Yourself Vasectomy" (for the medical enthusiast with an independent streak) and "The Nutritional Benefits of Nose-Picking" (a must-read for any aspiring culinary artist) — to name a few.

"These are great if your mother wants the latest Danielle Steele for Christmas. You put 'How to Make Your Mother a Porn Star' on the cover [of the actual Danielle Steele book]," said Helen Aikenhead, owner of Ottawa bookstore Three Wild Women. "And when she opens it up on Christmas morning, she doesn't know what your intentions are."

And if your mom would be less than impressed, Michelle Watters suggests using the titles to … um … clear the air, so to speak.

"If you want to sit by yourself, and you don't want anyone bothering you, "Perfecting the Art of Fart Projection" will guarantee you a solo seat," she said.

Since Woody has developed a new found fear of the dark, I guess I should sign off and trundle out to the car and go pick him up. He should be in a pretty good mood - It's WHO night.

Today, on my way to 99th Street to pick up the New Haven Symphony job, I stopped by my HMO at 91st & Broadway to make an appointment for a flu shot.  There was no crowd waiting this afternoon, and they went ahead and gave me the shot.  I was in and out in around 15 minutes.   I picked up the chart, which I'll work on tomorrow, and that was my afternoon.

I'm currrently working on an Act One number, "The Plan."

Hiya! DAY OFF!!! It's actually just a day off from driving to and from school... I still have wads of reading to do. Wads. Finally had to break down and use reading glasses!!! For the first time! OY! But they sure help.

I had my Cultural Narrative speech in Communications class yesterday - guess who lifted whole passages right out of Jewish Thighs, pasted them into the required outline format, and delivered them as if she had had time to memorize the whole thing??? Kind of knocked the heck out of the class curve... some of these poor kids would rather be skinned alive than have to speak in front of people. Two kids had meltdowns, trembling, hyperventilating, tears. Wow. The professor is kind - his job is teaching this course called Public Speaking. A few of the students are just learning English - double wow. It's a lesson in courage.

Penny, it truly is a test of courage for the kids to get up there and speak. I had a bit of an advantage when I was younger due to doing public speaking competitions in 4-H. I surprised myself and did one competition on a dare and actually won...

Okay, musicologists - here's the question of the day that needs answering and answering quickly -

What song is the following lyric from:

Give me a man that'll come and bake me a cake
Yes, he can put it in my oven any ol' time and watch it rise on up
Give me a man that'll come and mow my lawn from the front to back
Yes, he can tend my garden any ol' time and watch it rise on up

A woman needs a handyman to take care of her home
A woman needs a candyman who'll fight the bees for the comb

Matchmaker, matchmaker from Fiddler on the roof?

Penny, it truly is a test of courage for the kids to get up there and speak.

I have to present our films occasionally, and when I have to speak after them I am so nervous that I want to hurl! My partner usually does this and he is a fantastic speaker. So I hate it when he can't attend and I have to do it. My brain freezes!

I'm speaking to 2 different college classes over the next month, so maybe that will help me get over it speaking to a large crowd.
I think they're asking me because this is what happens when you get old!  ;)
