If you work for a sanitation department, it's usually impossibly to ignore your fetors.

For Jrand's topic:

Teacher at a class for English as a Second Language:  Someone give me a sentence with the word academy.

Student:  Every year the movie industry gives out their Academy awards.

Teacher:  Very good, let's try another one.  Someone give me a sentence with the word fornication.

Another older student:  I don't wear this dress every day, it's just for-an-occasion.

Favorite movie one-liners:  Much of the script of LOVER COME BACK

Doris Day:  Look at this packaging.  It's terrible.  The agency that gets this account is the one that shows the client the most attractive can.

(Cut to close-up of a chorus line of beautiful women from behind)

Client (to Rock Hudson):  Most attractive!

Well, maybe you have to see it.  :)

On that classy level, from NEVER GONNA DANCE:

Karen Ziemba (holding a fur received from her now-rich former hobo boyfriend):  Don't I have a wonderful bum?

(drapes the fur down to her bottom while she exits)

I just dropped in before getting back to work.  It's chilly today in Manhattan.  And now back to "the Brain!"

I want to go back to bed. But I'll probably just end up sitting here playing Gaia.

Our blue skies have given way to overcast conditions making it seem much colder than I expected it to be. Tomorrow the high is only supposed to be 49. Brrrr!!!

I finished REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE. It's such an odd movie, and yet one I think is kind of hypnotic in a lot of ways. And the yellow cast to everything makes it more hypnotic and unusual.

Elizabeth seems to be using the same Southern accent she used in CAT and GIANT, but Brando's is a more slurry and nasal Southern than he had used in previous films. Julie Harris didn't get enough credit for her work in the movie.

I spent the rest of the afternoon with MURDER SHE WROTE, Season 4. I watched all of the episodes on the first disc and the first two on the second disc. My favorite was the last one I watched - another episode where Lansbury plays her English music hall cousin Emma McGill. Rather than having Jessica in England and the two sharing screen time, this time Emma was alone in her murder mystery, and it was quite entertaining. Angela also reprised "How'd You Like to Spoon With Me" that she first sang in TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY.

I'm on break from gutter duty, after having attended a baby shower. Now back to more yard work and then unloading a dryer at the new house, more sanding, and if I'm lucky, some paint will be applied. So not much posting from me today, but believe me, I'd rather be posting!

ANother episode had a great lineup of old pros: Jane Powell, Eileen Brennan, Evelyn Keyes, Audrey Totter, Clu Gulager, and Robert Prosky. Wonderful episode.

LA Animal Battles:

Raccoons Invade Los Angeles Neighborhood
Quote
By NOAKI SCHWARTZ, AP

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 17) -- One balmy summer night, Larna Hartnack awoke to the cries of her dog Charlie and, to her horror, found the Dalmatian in a battle for her life — pinned by a gang of raccoons that tore into her flesh and nearly gnawed off her tail.

Charlie survived. But recurring raccoon attacks on dogs and other creatures have unnerved people along the Venice Canals, a funky, well-to-do beach neighborhood packed with ardent dog lovers, many of whom are now afraid to walk their pets at night or leave them alone in the back yard.

Communities around the country are plagued by destructive or aggressive raccoons, and many of them routinely trap, remove and even kill the animals. But this being California, the city's animal-control agency is instead urging people to try to get along with the raccoons — a notion that strikes some as political correctness gone wild.

"What we're trying to inculcate in the L.A. community is a reverence for life. If we have more reverence for life, it translates into all our programs — for women and infants, the elderly and everybody in our community," said Ed Boks, the head of Los Angeles Animal Services.

"Oh my God. I don't think I've ever been more insulted as a woman to be compared to a voiceless raccoon," said Hartnack, owner of Charlie the Dalmatian. She said the agency "seems more concerned with making a political statement than protecting people."

"Once you've been attacked by these animals and have them hanging out on your deck, your respect for their lives is lower than your respect for your animal's life and your own security," she said.

Dogs have not been the only victims of the raccoons. They have chomped on ducks, a parrot and the legs of a turtle that they dug out of hibernation. Nadine Parkos, former president of the Venice Canals homeowners association, said the koi fish in her pond were massacred.

Some residents tried to trap the raccoons but instead snared two cats and an opossum.

As for Charlie the Dalmatian, fur has grown over her scars, but she still whimpers and cowers when she sees raccoons approaching the family deck.

Hartnack and her husband have bought a BB gun and got the dog a stuffed raccoon.

"She loves attacking it," Hartnack said.

'Fraid if it were me I'd replace the BB gun with a 22.

Back from work.

The bad news is that, since it is Thanksgiving week, we are going to be working hard the entire time.  Lots of carts filled to overflowing, lots of cutomers wanting to get out of the store in the shortest amount of time, lots of tempers matching said amount of time.  The trick is to remain calm and nice to everyone.   :-\

The good news was that Edgar was bagging for me for part of the day.  Edgar is a young fellow who speaks very little English.  He hails from Texas.  What is great is how willing he is to give his all to whatever job he is presented.  Sweep/mop floors?  Sure!  Wrangle shopping carts?  No problem.  Bag groceries?  He's efficient, fast, great with the customers.  He was a joy to work with.  Too bad the rest of our baggers don't have his work ethic.

That's about the only thing we didn't find there!

I hear there's a very funny "rehearsal brain" lurking around LA tho...

Hey, der B---I am home for a moment while we get into one car and go into Atlanta to work on the new house. But ask away and I'll see if I can answer your question when I get back home.

Sunday evening greetings!  My, it's been a quiet day in Lake Wobegon at Haines His Way!

I've spent the day trying to get my act together to host Thanksgiving dinner.  What I originally thought would be an intimate dinner for 6 has now blossomed into a 2-table extravaganza for 12 (at last count...).

I would say, get it out of the freezer tonight and let it start thawing.  But by no means let it get any warmer than just thawed.  One thing you might consider is brining - the salt water is great for keeping the nasty bacteria away.  Not to mention, it helps flavor the meat.
