I just did a DVD check of "The Music Man" and Zaneeta does say "Ye gods".

I can, of course, imagine recent productions changing it to the more PC and less-controversial "Ye gads" to appease the pentecostal-minded.

Personally, anyone who jumps to condemn folks to hellfire and eternal damnation for not behaving the way their religion demands or for saying things that their religion objects to strikes me as being very REPRESSIVE and totally NOT "freedom" in the "American sense" of the word.

I'm actually wondering if "ye gods" would have made it past the censors back then.  ???  Hmm... I wonder if I can dig up my script... Or if there's a cue in the piano/vocal score... Hmm....

Back when?  Re: the censors?

You mean in the late 50s on Broadway?

Or in 1962 on film?

I assure you, Zaneeta goes through the entire film squealing "Ye gods".

I actually just pulled out my DVD too...

However, I seem to remember seeing "ye gads" in the printed script.  Maybe not.

"Mama!  A man with a suitcase followed me home."

"Did he say anything?"

"He tried."

"Did you say anything?"

"Of course not, Mama!"

Jose, is there an IHOP or Waffle House anywhere near you where you could go for breakfast?

I could go for a pecan waffle and syrup, a hard-fried egg, three strips of bacon, some toast and a couple of cups of coffee.

And I have to say - this is not a quote from the show/movie - that the dance break for "Marian, The Librarian" is very hard to play - even when you simplify it down to the "basics".  On the flipside, the dance break in "Shipoopi" is loads of fun to play, especially at the ragtime section.

And still today, I have a "habit" of shouting out "Shipoopi!" in rehearsals at the end of a dance number.  Whether it's the "Shipoopi" or The Music Man or not.  ;)

-That or "Sarava!"  ;D

On the other hand, the orchestrations in the film version of "Marian the Librarian" are exquisite...especially during the dance.

But I absolutely believe you about the difficulty of playing the music on piano.

One thing we NEVER did in any musical rehearsal in any production I was involved with was to criticize the piano player.

I'm feeling the call of my mattress warmer.

"Ron.......come to bed."

"Ron......the sheets are nice and warm."

"Ron.....Ron.....why do you tarry?"

(My mattress warmer is very erudite and absolutely would use the word "tarry").

Didn't Irving Berlin rhyme "tarry" with "marry" in "Annie Get Your Gun"?

If you're checking that DVD, Jose....go to the scene after "Gary Indiana"....it's in the library.  The two teens are planning to meet while looking at books in the stacks....

Hmmm... I think there is an IHOP down on 125th.  However, there are a slew of 24-hour diners that I would consider first.  But, I'd have to say, a double order of hash browns "scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, diced, peppered, and capped" would make for some mighty fine eatin' right now.  :)
