Newman's State of the Union:

For the Randy Newman fans out there, the NY Times published the lyrics to one of his new songs today. (I've heard it several times recently as he kept rewriting it.) It's going to be released on iTunes soon. You just have to imagine his delivery:

Oh---you might have to register with the Times to go to that link, so I'll just post the lyrics:

A Few Words in Defense of Our Country
By Randy Newman

Iíd like to say a few words
In defense of our country
Whose people arenít bad nor are they mean
Now the leaders we have
While theyíre the worst that weíve had
Are hardly the worst this poor world has seen

Letís turn historyís pages, shall we?

Take the Caesars for example
Why within the first few of them
They had split Gaul into three parts
Fed the Christians to the lions
And burned down the City
And one of íem
Appointed his own horse Consul of the Empire
Thatís like vice president or something
Thatís not a very good example, is it?
But wait, hereís one, the Spanish Inquisition
They put people in a terrible position

I donít even like to think about it
Well, sometimes I like to think about it

Just a few words in defense of our country
Whose time at the top
Could be coming to an end
Now we donít want their love
And respect at this point is pretty much out of the question
But in times like these
We sure could use a friend

Hitler. Stalin.
Men who need no introduction
King Leopold of Belgium. Thatís right.
Everyone thinks heís so great
Well he owned The Congo
He tore it up too
He took the diamonds, he took the gold
He took the silver
Know what he left them with?
Malaria

A president once said,
ďThe only thing we have to fear is fear itselfĒ
Now it seems like weíre supposed to be afraid
Itís patriotic in fact and color coded
And what are we supposed to be afraid of?
Why, of being afraid
Thatís what terror means, doesnít it?
Thatís what it used to mean

The end of an empire is messy at best
And this empire is ending
Like all the rest
Like the Spanish Armada adrift on the sea
Weíre adrift in the land of the brave
And the home of the free
Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye.

DR Jose,

When an item appears on the IKEA website and says that you have to buy it from the store, but then you check the local store's inventory and it's not in stock, are you S.O.L. or will they order it for you? If they order it, do you then have to pay their shipping charges?

You're basically S.O.L. if it's a "standard stock" item - which is any item that is listed on the website as "Not Available from the web site".  You just have to wait for IKEA to get their next shipment in.  They do not special order items to be sent to the store. -Unless it's one of their higher-end items - couches, cabinetry, applances, etc.  Thankfully, they get things shipped to their stores on a regular basis, although I have talked to some friends who have waited weeks, even months for a something to come back in stock.  Those boats from Sweden can take a while sometimes.

Would they hold one for you if it comes in on one of their shipments?

Yes, you can be put on the list.  They will call you when the item comes back in stock, and then you have a certain amount of time to come in and pick them up.

What performer, of whom you've never had the opportunity to see live on stage, do you most wish you could have seen in either a play, musical or concert?

I left just before Jose said Hello so I'm now saying hello back. And hello to all you people out there in the dark.

I don't think I will ever be around to round off a page count. Not when it's 3am in New York. If I'm up at 3am then somethin' ain't right somewhere.

Cilla - great.  If I can get myself an orchestra aisle seat for that night (I'll try for your side of the theater), it'll be just like I'm going with you, only separate.  Or something like that.  :)

Good morning!

Beautiful winter morning. Blue sky with wispy clouds and cold, but it's supposed to get into the 50s today. So, overall, a nice day!

[sigh] Another two hours of IDOL auditions tonight which I may not watch in toto. THE KNIGHTS OF PROSPERITY is on, and both MEDIUM and CSI: NY have new episodes tonight.

The IDOL show is NYC-based which might allow for a greater degree of talent (and talent-free, too, I assume).

I'll finish my second go-round with THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA this afternoon but haven't decided what else I'll watch.

I did record MERRY ANDREW from TCM this morning. I've never seen this all the way through, so that may take the remainder of my afternoon.

I have a "current favorite" (thankfully) in the new "American Idol":

He's Sundance Head...and they've NEVER had a voice like his in the competition.

Also, there's also Melinda Doolittle, a woman who has been singing backup all her life.  She's terrific...if obviously nervous as hell.  They put her through telling her to believe in herself!

Isn't "Myrmidon" an alternate spelling for the godfather of meerkats?

Due to lack of anything interesting on the networks at 9 p.m., I took a chance and watched "Dirt".

Boy!  Am I glad!  This is a terrific show (on F/X).  Courtney Cox is wonderful and the rest of the cast pretty darned great.  It's good to see a calculating, conniving, bitter but ruthless attractive power-hungry woman heading up a TV show again.

It's been so long since Alexis Carrington said goodbye.

Considering how quickly that marriage ended, "one-time husband" sounds about right!

During my college days, there was many a MYRMIDON to nearly as many political causes living IN MY DORM.

I have literally worn holes in the soles of my shoes, from being on my feet all day.

ASK BK DAY QUESTION

When you rereleased Subways Are For Sleeping; the bonus tracks consisted of demos written for the show. Did you try to get the rights to the McGuire Sisters recording of the show as they sung some of the songs that were dropped from the show?

No, we never tried - the album is owned by Universal and they, at the time and even now, weren't licensing anything to anyone.

I've seen some greats, but one of my great regrets is having had tickets to see I Do! I Do! with Mary Martin and Robert Preston, and getting into the city too late (traffic) and missing the show.  I would love to have seen Frank Sinatra in his heyday.  I would have loved to have seen Jack Benny's live show.  And just because it's so legendary, Laurette Taylor in The Glass Menagerie.  And many, many others.
