WE NEED A LITTLE AUGUST
« on: August 01, 2007, 12:10:41 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were August-like, and now it is time for you to post until the August cows come home, which will be in September.  They're funny that way.

And the word of the day is: ONIOMANIA!

Not that anyone around these here parts would know what THAT means!

Still, I'll do my bit, as I wait for my hard drive to do its weekly complete backup at 12:40.

PIC FROM YANKEE-OZ

An as yet unnamed seven month-old Northern Koala joey clings to his mother Tara after emerging from her pouch at Sydney Wildlife World July 31, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The zoo has recently had three koala's give birth to joeys, who have up until recently been mostly living in their mothers pouches, and suckling on milk. The Northern Koala species - a mammal - is on the vulnerable list of animals in New South Wales.

Oy vey! It's 5 a.m. and I'm just about to go to bed. I just got home about 45 minutes ago from the Q-Do. My friend, Craig, and I stood out on 42nd Street until about 3:00, and then my train was stalled on the tracks for a good 40 minutes. :-\ OY and VEY!

Much fun had tonight. It was great to get to know some of the cast members a little better, get to meet some of the original cast members and winning lots and lots of tickets. Now I know why I don't gamble!

Anyway, I'm about to pass out from exhaustion, so...bon soir!

SCRIPTLAND

Quote
By Jay A. Fernandez, Special to The Times
August 1, 2007

All due credit

The high school ecosystem of "Bratz" -- in the tradition of "Heathers" and "Mean Girls" before it -- can be pretty cutthroat for its striving, self-conscious young female characters. But it's got nothing on the disappointment and scars often waiting for screenwriters who enter a Writers Guild credit arbitration hearing.

Susie Singer Carter ("Cake," "Men in Trees") is the latest in a long line of writers who feels betrayed by the system: "I just experienced the worst month of my career, which by all rights should have been my best," says Carter, an actor and TV writer whose first shot at a produced film credit on "Bratz" was recently denied by the guild's arbitration panel.

Carter was the last writer to work on the project. Hired in early December during auditions, she stayed on as a writer and consultant when production started in February. She even waived her associate producer credit to improve her chances on the writing credit -- and ended up with neither.

To add insult to injury, the film's producers were apparently confident enough in Carter's contributions to the script that they had Lionsgate print the one-sheet posters for the film with Carter's name in first position (followed by ultimately credited screenwriter Susan Estelle Jansen, and Adam de la Peña & David Eilenberg, who ended up with story credit).

As a final consolation, producer Avi Arad wrote a short encomium thanking Singer Carter for "her indispensable contribution" to run at the start of the film's end-credits crawl. But the guild forced its removal from prints (also not the first time that's happened).

"With virtually no grievance process, I feel impotent and vulnerable against a union that I pay dues to protect me," Carter says. "It's mind-boggling."

Thanks to DRs JOSE and JASON for the Q on the spot report.

Thanks to DR CILLA LIZ for the link to DR RODZINSKI's column!!  Lots of fun reading it, and of course HAPPY TIME was one of the shows discussed by William Goldman in his book THE SEASON.

That picture at the bottom of the column was NOT flattering to either of those people....unless they REALLY look like that!  It was kind of scary.

August.....august.  August.

The month of MANY important birthdays and other occasions.

JEANNE EAGELS - Kim is indeed bee-yoo-tee-ful.  But her acting is just embarrassing.  Although her breakdown onstage is always good for a laugh.  Agnes Moorehead ("This girl is an actress!!!") is outrageous as only she can be.

The film is saved for me by the final scenes.....Sidney's choices - or the writer's choices - or the cinematographer's choices (or a combination of the three) make it a haunting few moments.

Funniest Kim Novak line reading: On the telephone - "We're done makin' the moo-vay!"

I did a bad thing last night.

For ONE WEEK I have been listening to El Gallo bitch and bitch about "Round and Round" - I have come in early, I have changed it just for him, I have taken his suggestions (he is a serious NON-dancer, BTW) and been nothing but cooperative with him.

Last night he wanted to talk about it again.  I said (I had already told the director my stance):  The number is done.  You have ALL the steps I am going to give you.  I have done it several times, spent hours on it, changed it for you.  Now you do what is comfortable for you.  I will not work on it again.  It's done.

"Hey guys, I have an audition for Rent in a few weeks and I am having a
hard time thinking of a good audition song. They want something
Rock/Pop...no broadway. I am auditioning for Mark/Angel.. .so any
suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
