TOD: My favorite place in town for Chinese food is called GOURMET WOK, but most of the lights on the sign are burned out, so we call it GO OK.

There was another place I used to like, but the last time we went there, I became ill.

While I certainly would agree about NYMF's noble aims, I would also say that it started out as one thing and has morphed into something wholly other. Part of the reason is that it has been abused by some shows who have continually bent the very strict Equity rules (bent being a kind word) so much that it is no longer possible to just get up and do the best you can do with limited finances. The bar keeps being raised and raised. Ironically, though, the shows doing the bending are seldom the audience favorites, which is, at least, gratifying in some way. Yes, chaos, chaos is understandable. But when shows are paying the sort of dough they're paying, then incompetence is not only unacceptable, it's debilitating and indefensible. That said, I shall now be on my way to rehearsal, and I, too, encourage all lurkers and readers to attend as many NYMF shows as possible.

My Favorite Chinese Restaurant in New York is no longer there. It was in Chinatown and was called Bo Bo's. Owned by former Chinese Acrobats,Great Food.

A Dish of Salt was also wonderful and I don't really know if that exists today.

In Boca Raton-The Best Chinese Restaurant(and we don't have that many good ones) Is UNCLE TAI'S.

A very good restaurant is part of a chain(which by the way is Very Good for A Chinese Chain restaurant) P.F. CHANG'S

Noel, you make some interetsing points about NYMF, but I'm sure some of the NYMF folk would take issue with your categorizing the shows' selection process as "whether it was that esteemed panel of seven Tony-honorees or the young folks who run NYMF itself."

The Invited Works are not chosen by so-called "young people." Whatever kvetching there is to be done, what IS done largely by "young people" (the NYMF reader staff) is whittling the "Next Link" submissions downs from hundreds to the 35 or so that the Tony-honored panel reads to choose their 18. The "Invited Works" are chosen as described in the NYMF materials.

"In addition to our 18 Next Link productions, NYMF presents another 10-15 musicals in each year’s festival as part of our Invited Shows Series. Potential Invited Shows are submitted privately to NYMF by an industry advocate -- an agent, producer, director or theatre company -- or have been scouted by our programming staff members, who attend developmental workshops and readings throughout the year. The slate of invited shows is ultimately selected to increase and diversify each festival’s roster of first-rate musical theatre projects."

All the Invited Works that i know of went through this process.

Other than that, you make some good points, though. (But just in case anyone's confused, Walmartopia was a hit at The Fringe, not at NYMF.)

Thank you, DR derBrucer, for lending some balance to the Emmy coverage here. I enjoyed the JERSEY BOYS number a lot and thought it was beautifully staged for the round stage, and I agree completely that Tony Bennett was in atrocious voice (well, he IS over 80) last night.

As for Stritch, as usual she seemed befuddled and combative about her confusion (as if it's someone else's fault). Poor Stanley Tucci just got out of her way and let her rant.

Stanley, BTW, was my favorite male presenter/winner of the evening. He looks GREAT in a tux.

I've lamented here before about the loss of my beloved nearby Chinese restaurant China House which has been gone about three years now. None of the other Chinese restaurants in town have been able to touch the food there. I must add, however, that there are still some wonderful ones here (Tin-Tin comes immediately to mind.)

Got the rest of the ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS binus features watched. The piecemeal audio commentary was very entertaining. Loved star Paul Mantee's comments and enthusiasm about being an actor and his work in the movie.

Today, after lunch out with best friend John and a trip to the post office and drug store, I will start THE INTRUDER, a Roger Corman-produced social picture with William Shatner in the lead role of a bigot. This was when Shatner was a very serious actor, before he achieved icon status as Captain Kirk or kidded his image in other projects.

I still remember seeing him as a psychotic killer on an episode of THE FUGITIVE which I found absolutely riveting.

If anyone is still watching, tonight is the season finale of SAVING GRACE. I have stuck with it to the bitter end, and I'll record the show tonight (so I can slip through commercials tomorrow). I doubt, however, that I'll pick back up with the show when it returns next summer.

I still have Friday's season finale of MONK to watch which I'll probably get to tonight.

I was relieved Tony Shalhoub didn't win yet another Emmy last night, but have to admit I was surprised the Academy gave the Emmy to Ricky Gervais (for EXTRAS) rather than Alec Baldwin (for 30 ROCK).

Of course, I'm not saying Ricky wasn't deserving. He was absolutely hilarious in the show, especially the second season when his character Andy had achieved a little bit of fame and wanted to travel in circles with bigger stars.

RE: the emmys. I also did not like them doing it in the round. It was very distracting seeing the blurry faces in the background.

And why bother having a host if he was barely on. I like to have a host who is on a LOT MORE!

Actually, I've noticed in the past few years that hosts on all awards shows (when they have hosts, some don't even use them any more) do much less than in deacdes before. There is an offscreen announcer now to do most of the introductions, and the host only appears occasionally.
