Thursday morning greetings!  It's a very dark and rainy morning here in SW Ohio.  All the way to work, I kept thinking to myself how much I didn't want to drive to Columbus (2 hours each way) this afternoon/evening for a 45-minute reception.  Well, my decision was made for me when I got here and found that we have 6 people missing from our department today and they really, really, really need my information-waitressing help.

Good morning!

It was overcast and a trifle misty this morning making the moderately cool morning seem humid and clammy. Not supposed to be as warm today as the past few days, but I'll stil be wearing shorts when I go out to lunch later. The sun has come out now, and it's pretty (but doesn't seem much like fall at al.)

My JAZZ SINGER only shipped yesterday, so I won't get it until Saturday (if then). Too busy to watch it anyway, but I'm most interested in the lengthy documentary about the dawn of sound. And all the Vitophone shorts are also tempting. Looking forward to having some breathing room next week and can watch some of the DVDs that have come in during the past month for fun. I also have about four or five movies on the DVR that need watching so I can clear them off.

I've mentioned this before, but in the 1960s, I got an RCA LP caled STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN 1929-1930 that is one of my dearest possessions. Though most of the songs on this LP are studio recordings and not from the soundtracks of the movies, I ADORE this record. On it are Fanny Brice singing "Cookin' Breakfast for the One I Love," Everett Marshall with "Mr. and Mrs. Sippi," Gloria Swanson's "Love, Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere," John Boles with "Nichaavo," Jeanette MacDonald's "Dream Lover," Ramon Navarro "Pagan Love Song," and songs from Helen Kane, Maurice Chevalier, Bebe Daniels, and so many more.

Nothing has been more disappointing to me than the fact that RCA never transferred this to CD. I have practiucally worn out this LP.

I have LIFE and CSI: NY recorded from last night, and tonight, of course, is the mammoth night of TV.

VIVA LAUGHLIN gets a premiere following CSI tonight, and I will be watching to quell my curiosity. Actually, despite damning reviews from all of the national critics that I read, my local TV critic gave it three stars (out of four).

I had to miss YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN last night because of my foot.

(The way I'm walking right now, I could have done the "walk this way" joke without even trying.  :) )

Good morning, HHW!

TOD:
One of my favorite singers for many years was Alberta Hunter. The CDs I have are more recent recordings--not 1930's recordings--and I don't know how she sounded long ago, but I bet I would still like her.

Some responses to last night's posts:

MATTH: "PRIVATE PRACTICE. Again, interesting cases, and the most monotonous personal stories among the doctors EVER. All these people seem interested in is finding a hook-up. Don't they have hobbies? Other friends? Lives outside of this clinic? We're four episodes into the season (plus that pilot we saw last year), and all we know is that their love lives are lonely. Well, join a dance class. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Find a political candidate and work for him/her. Do SOMETHING to quell the loneliness if it's so bad."

I couldn't help but chuckle at this. It echoes some of my sentiments so well.

Deborah Kerr has died at 86.

Somehow that doesn't seem so old these days.

I also liked CILLALIZ's connection between lots of rain and increased business for her new firm, ie, people only attend to legal matters when they can't do other things.

RE PRIVATE PRACTICE.

I kept thinking about myself. When my partner of 8 years left me for another man, I dove into community theater big time. If I didn't get a role in a show, I ushered, sold concessions, worked on the crew, and it was there that I met every single close friend that I have in my life right now.

These doctors wouldn't feel so lonely and so emprty if they would DO something with their lives rather than sit around and mope about their situations.

Deborah Kerr has died at 86.

How terribly sad this news is.

Deborah Kerr was one of my earliest favorite actresses, mostly by virtue of having seen her in "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" on Saturday Night at the Movies (on NBC) and, later, "The Journey".  (My first fave was Susan Hayward).

I was thinking strongly about her last month and did some Googling to find out how she has been doing.  I vividly recall her appearance at the Academy Awards..ohh, a decade ago?....for her career achievement Oscar.  She was thrilled but seemed "out of it" to a degree.  I did not know at that time that she had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for many years.

Monday evening, during his intro for the TCM airing of "Young Bess," Osborne informed me that the movie project was initially intended for Deborah Kerr to star but that things intervened, delaying the filming.  By the time MGM gave the project the go-ahead, Kerr was thought to be too mature for the young Elizabeth and was cast, instead, as Catherine.  Jean Simmons won the lead.

It's just as well, because Kerr made a very mature splash around that time in "From Here to Eternity."

Kerr very much resembled my maternal (step) grandmother...complexion, facial features/structure and hair.

Another star has gone nova.

Taking a break from information-waitressing.  The count of 6 people missing today didn't include the 2 vacant positions we have right now.  And, of course, the local career college brought a class over to do term paper research this morning.  Oy!

This gives me an idea for a couple of one-act plays.

The first will be entitled "Godot Gets A Job"

The second will be entitled "Waiting For FedEx".

It's a very strange morning here in the office.

Folks who are generally quiet in the early going are burning and turning.  I predict burnout by lunchtime for at least one of them....who has expended more energy in the past 30 minutes than he generally manages to expend all day.

No spoilers.

Re: DR MattH's views of the siblings on DIRTY SEXY MONEY.

You hate the twins and the sister who is after Peter Krause.

I actually love the twins.  I guess the girl from the OC can be a bit irritating at times. But I'm sort of fond of the male twin and his girlfriend.

I will agree that the sister (is it Karen?) is so annoying. But i guess that's her character.

I am also interested in the mysteries with donald sutherland, the father, and Simon Elder.

As for PUSHING DAISIES (again no spoilers).

So DR MattH the part that grates on  your nerves is the narrative at the beginning and the sweet fable aspect of it?  I could see why not everybody might like that. But i love that part of it.  It makes it so different than anything else on tv.

I'm liking Kristin Chenoweth much better. And the cast is so zany.  And i love the mysteries.  I think it's hilarious in such a silly way.

Here are 2 pictures from day 2, which was Tuesday.
