Shayne, yes, the Bava book arrived while I was in NY.  Only took seven years.  It's huge, the photos are nice, but the text is four columns on each page and if laid out properly would probably make the book 3000 pages instead of the 1200 it is.  It's much too difficult to read and way too much information on way too slight a figure in cinema history.  I'll end up reading about the films I like, I'm sure.

I guess the "huge" rainstorm they said would be happening early this evening happened - about three drops total.  I gotta tell you.

I don't think I'll get through a movie tonight, but I think I'll nose around and see if anything piques my interest or, for that matter, interests my piques.

***INTERVIEW VIBES*** for DR Edisaurus and DH Greg

We had a good day of shooting today, so thank you for the vibes!

Early in the day we shot Johnny Mercer's estate, thanks to the two listing agents (it's on the market). The sun hadn't popped out when we started shooting, but it finally did. Between the pool and the tennis courts was an expanse of lawn. It was covered with birds, and I didn't pay much attention to them until i realized they were all bluebirds---dozens of them! I wish I had a nice DR Laura camera; I've never seen so many in one place!

Above Mercer's house was an architectural gem known as the Ship of the Desert.

Across the mesa you could see Barry Manilow's house, where he lives year-round. Every day at noon a private plane flies him to Vegas, and home at night after his shows.

Then we had a wonderful lunch, serenaded by a wonderful musician who was playing all kind of foreign language songs I loved---"Eres Tu", lots of old French songs, "Que Sera Sera"...just lovely. (And he was quite hadsome as well!)

Afterwards, we went to Mandy Mercer's house in Rancho Mirage. Mandy is probably about 70 and not in good health; she was on oxygen, but she was a trouper and we got 40 minutes of good stuff with her. We packed up to go and I went into her bedroom to say goodbye. And that was where the weirdness happened.

I saw her cute bull dog sleeping in his bed on the floor. I was surprised, because he hadn't made a peep all evening and I didn't even realize he was in there. He was so cute, kind of a little black bulldog.

I had never seen a dog sleep that soundly. He looked old, so I thought he might be deaf, or just really asleep. I was talking to Mandy about how cute he was and what a sound sleeper, when the producer came over to me and whispered that the dog was dead! Oh my God!

Then Mandy told me that after he had died, she "couldn't bear to leave him behind" and I realized that he was STUFFED! I din't know what to say, I was so shocked. He looked so real!!

So I told her that I'd had a cat for 20 years that I'd loved so much, and I would have done the same thing if I had thought of it.

She seemed to appreciate the comment and when we were walking out, the producer whispered, "nice comeback".

One interesting piece of trivia I learned was that Vic Mizzy came to Johnny Mercer and asked him to write the lyrics to a theme song for a tv show he had composed. Something called "The Addams family". He threw together some lyrics and didn't even ask for credit for them.

Vic came back later for lyrics to another show and this time Johnny decided to be credited. Of course that show tanked (she didn't remember the name of it) and he never got royalties for Addams Family, which has been re-run into oblivion!

Another piece of trivia---they're still counting, but right now it looks like Johnny wrote over 1500 songs with 260 different composers!

How did he find time to have such a lengthy affair with Judy Garland?

Did more weirdness happen in the bedroom?

That is the title of my sequel to a movie that hasn't been made yet.

Fascinating stories, Edi.

Any connection between Manilow living in Mercer's (and Mandy's) neighborhood and the song "Mandy" - or has this been discussed already?

Manilow ripped off (covered) the Scott English song "Brandy". I think the name chage was to to distinguish it from the already charting "Brandy - Your'e A Fine Girl")

"Mandy" was not written by Manilow.

Was the first recorded song by Kevin Spacey a "Mercer" song?
(on the "Midnight in the garden . . ." soundtrack?).

Connections:  Mercer wrote with Bobby Darin.  Darin was played by Spacey in the bio pic.

Mercer and Manilow were friends, and they did sort of co-write a song: "When October Goes." Supposedly, Ginger Mercer sent the lyrics to Barry after Johnny died, and Barry wrote the music. Pretty song!
