Spoo, I forgot about the TOD:

I love the computer for the quick and easy access to so much information -- to click on and get so much news instantly -- I'm a big current events type person so that's great.

I love being able to email someone or getting email quickly without having to wait days like you do for snail mail.

I love having access to a site like HHW where you get to play with a bunch of wild, wacky, fun and caring folks from around the world.

I like being able to log-on and order books or CDs from Barnes and Noble within the comfort of my own home -- no drivng around, standing in line, etc.

I hate how addictive the computer can be -- you can spend hours on it before you know it.

I hate hackers, spammers, and other unsavory types who use it for evil (identity thief, stalking folks, harassing folks, bulllying folks, etc.)

I don't like how it isolates people (just like video games and television) -- even though you're connecting with people and meeting people, you're still not out there actually engaging with them face to face.

I've been reading a paperback book by an interesting type named Mickey Knox, who started out as an actor and then became graylisted and then became an expatriate, living in Rome and working on many big films as dialogue director and even writer.  This book is so riddled with spelling errors, and silly mistakes it's clear no one proofed one word of it.   And it's not print on demand or self-published, although it is a smaller publisher, which just goes to show you that having a bigger publisher means nothing these days.  My guess is this book sold less than Benjamin Kritzer.

Many publishers dispensed with proofreaders long ago. Like so many businesses, they simply don't want to spend the money. I'm not sure if there are any "good" publishers left.

The late, great, Colleen Dewhurst told me that Warren Oates was one of the most charismatic and talented actors she had ever worked with on film.  She had made the first TV-movie with him entitled, AND BABY MAKES SIX, and was at that time getting ready to make the sequel with Mr. Oates.

Consider all of actors she worked with (and married), I was surprised by the comment.

At the time, there was some talk about a possible Oscar nomination for him for his work in this film. (Playing opposite two guys who weren't primarily actors, he easily steals the film from them, and his character is much more colorful than theirs as well.) I guess since the film didn't do well at the box-office, the Academy members found five other actors to nominate.

Back from more errands and picking up this year's Christmas cards.  Fourteen days before Christmas this city is already completely out of control and unless I have to, I'm not leaving the home environment too much.

The post office had a line out the door and onto the street (I needed to ship two packages and came at the time the employees have always told me is the best for avoiding lines - this certainly worked last Christmas and all of this year).  So, I drove two miles to my little mini-post office in a pharmacy and their line was longer!  I'll ship these packages tomorrow morning and hope for the best.

The traffic is miserable, too - not that it's so crowded, but because people are driving even more like idiots than usual.  Going ten miles an hour, talking on their cell phone, blah, blah, blah.  Then I went to Gelson's, and they had my new fave, their cheesy potatoes.  However, there was a really hefty woman and her cart blocking the entire contents of the hot food section.  AFter five minutes of waiting for her vain attempts to figure out which sort of container plate she wanted to use, I said, "Can I please get in there?"  She screamed back, "Get in there!!!" and whipped her cart out of the way.  I just gave her one of my patented bk looks that said, "You are a cretin and a wazoo and you will pay for this sort of behavior as you already are paying you insufferable ort."

Off to a meeting.  I believe they will be serving take-out food from Artie's Deli at the meeting, which is really something to look forward to.

For lunch today, Michael and I headed over to Pam Real Thai (Encore).  This was the place that bk dined at while he was in town for The Brain, and I seem to recall he had less than an ideal dining experience.  Well, I usually eat at the original location, but since we were in the 'hood, we dined at the "encore".

When we walked in, no one was there.  In fact, we thought they were closed, but they weren't.  I guess we had missed whatever lunch rush they had had.  In any case, I guess being the only ones in the place worked to our advantage since we both ended up with some rather tasty dishes.  Michael had the Thai-Roasted Chicken, and I had a Southern Thai Curry with Eggplant and Shrimp.  And I have to say it was one of the rare times where I agreed with the heat level listed in the menu - it was a "three pepper" dish.  The portion was also very generous - I don't think I even got through half of it before I was all full up.

Would love to stay and chat, but I have a lot of work to do, so I came back to the office tonight...and since the Temptations are performing at the Orpheum next door tonight, I just happened to stop at the box office and learned that 3rd row center had just been released.   Hello, how do you say no to 3rd row center.   So, I have until 8:00 to get some work done...then off to see the Temptations.   Cool beans.  

Glad it's an aisle seat...I'm wearing my work boots and they take up a lot of room.

Evening all. I'm back from a day of gift bags. Things are moving along on schedule and it looks like we will be finished tomorrow afternoon, two days ahead of schedule. I have my office holiday party tomorrow evening and then I will have two extra days of "vacation". We have a friend playing one of the Santas at Macys this year so we will go visit him and perhaps have our picture taken (depends on how much it costs). We also plan a trip to the Lincoln Center Library to return some vocal scores. We will have dinner with a good friend early on Friday evening (I also have to do the damned laundry). Saturday is an open book (although Ant has a dance class at 1:45). Sunday we have two, count 'em, two parties. One is a late Hanukkah brunch which should be lots of fun and then it's off to Brooklyn for a gay (in many ways) holiday tree trimming party. Monday we have our Volunteer Thank You party and Tuesday I'm supposed to have tickets for the end of year Gypsy competition (delayed by the strike). I'll find out tomorrow if I actually have the tickets. Whew, sounds busy to me. Who said anything about a vacation.

Oh, and several more:

(Can't believe I forgot this one): The number one reason I love the computer is for word processing -- to type, to change, to delete, to edit, to save, to file, etc., etc. in the blink of an eye. I was always a horrible typist, so it's like I've died and gone to heaven.

Another reason to love a computer: Spell Check!

Another reason computers can drive you mad is when they act like they have a mind of their own and just start doing something out of the blue -- freezing up, or acting strange -- something that can't be explained (not even by a computer whiz).

A computer requires left brain capabilities, so a total right brainer like me finds it frustrating to remember and work with codes and keys, etc. (as you know, I don't know how to make letters dance, or move photos from one location to another -- your strange, techie world frightens and confuses me...)

I do love computers and the Internet for the ease it has given me in many aspects of my life. My work has been made easier by better computers and especially by the Internet.

I do not like the idea that now that we have all this technology it must take over our lives. We must be connected 24/7, answering cell phones or texting if we're bored (if you didn't want to come to the theatre, then just say no, don't sit in the damn seat with your coat over your cell phone texting, do you think the audience members around you are blind???). People ask how do I survive without a cell phone. The same way I survived before they became "necessary" for more than half the population. I don't begrude people their cell phones but I don't need one.

Need, Want, two different words and two different ideas. I'm very lucky that my life and my job is such that I don't need to be connected every minute of every day. I don't need to take a cell phone with me on a "vacation" and spend half of said vacation working. It's not a vacation if that's what you're doing. The idea drilled into us that we are not good employees if we are not married to our jobs is fallacious!!! I almost had a nervous breakdown 12 years ago because of that idea and I praise whatever you believe your higher power to be every day that I made the changes and decisions I made then to give me the happy and lovely life I have now, with a computer, yes, but using it when I want for what I want.
