Wow! Except for the intentional rudeness of a total bitch, it's been a wonderful day.  I got to the Raines' event around noon and visited with my conductor friend Evans Haile and Mr & Mrs Jeffrey Wells. Jeff is a baritone doing three roles at the Met this year, and Evans is a conductor who's been managing the summer theatre on the Cape, the Cape Playhouse. Shortly thereafter, John and Judy Margolis showed up and I love them.  Judy is on the staff of the Metropolitan Opera, and John's a stage director.  This led to a long discussion of SWEENEY TODD, and Simon and Nancy Jones and their son Tim arrived.  Tim is Charlotte's age, and Simon was the lead in the original BBC production of HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY as well as the film of PRIVATES ON PARADE.  His wife Nancy used to manage Monty Python.  We all raved some more about SWEENEY, and I believe Simon, possibly Nancy, John, and I will see ENCHANTED this week, possibly Friday afternoon.  Simon just got back from doing a role  in a new Brian Friel play at the Guthrie.

Then the producers - a husband and wife team -showed up. While I was talking to Evans, the producer wife came up to us, said hello to Evans, talked to him for 5 minutes or so, pointedly ignoring me, and left.  I debated throwing her to the floor and jabbing a plastic fork into her neck but I figured it wouldn't do more than provoke her.  After that, she seated herself on the sofa and held court.  I figured it was time to leave and head over to Skip and Fred's where I knew the festivities would be fantastic!

And so they were: lots of wonderful food and dear friends, including a new friend Brian (I forget the last name!) who's able to hold his own in th noisy banter between Milla, the lovely DR Julie, Fred, and me.  Later Bill Parry and Maureen Silliman arrived.  I love Maureen and it was great to see Bill, whom I hadn't seen in close to twenty years.  Skip prepared a wonderful dinner and it was a great group of people. Gossip, grudges, and wishes were freely passed about and Skip and Fred are truly the social leaders of the most wonderful salon in Manhattan.  Another epic event to remember and cherish.  Thank you, gentlemen.

DR JMK, the only chromatic thing I can think of at the moment is Bizet's "Habanera!"

DR td, the "all I really wanted" sounds so familiar, but I suspect I'm thinking of another tune that matches those rhythms and I cannot think of what show it's from!

Oy!  Maybe I should have stabbed her with the fork.

That well-known Top 40 hit!   ;D

The song I'm thinking of is quite appropriate for today, especially in light of some of the posts we northwesterners are making.  (And I didn't say chromatic, as in consecutive half steps in one direction--just consecutive half steps, hint, hint, nudge, nudge say n'more).

Suddenly I am not feeling so well.....but I am not sure why.

Best Christmas present this year:

Lithographs of original costume sketches from Gone With the Wind, signed by designer Walter Plunkett.

And of course, Molly and Austin who got them for me, got NOTHING from me thanks to USPS.

Oh my, DRs!   I have a song running through my head which I can't identify!
(Don't you hate it when that happens)?
Anyway, I'm almost sure it's a show tune. . .
. . .and it's about raising a family (maybe). . .
BUT, its refrain is something about "ALL I EVER WANTED."
Can you help me? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Please?
Before 3am arrives and I sit up in bed with a "Eureka!" moment?
. . .All I ever wanted. . . .

Male or female singer?  chorus?

I think HAIRSPRAY and DREAMGIRLS were much more for mainstream audiences.  I think that regular people who enjoy musicals could easily love those.

I actually like most things that i see.  And while i did enjoy SWEENEY TODD i left disappointed.  And I love this show.  I do think that something that DR JOSE (i believe) said is true. If you are a fan of Tim Burton's style of movies that will affect how you feel here.

I will say one thing that bothered me. The stark make-up.  I was completely distracted by the white make-up painted on Johnny Depp (and Helena's) faces. Did not like this at all.

One thing i did like though was Anthony. At first he struck me as not who i would have thought of to play this part. But he totally won me over (especially his singing).

Jennifer, I am confused about one thing you wrote.  You say you are a fan of the Broadway musical, and yet you say the make-up of Mr. Depp and Ms. Bonham Carter bothered you.  I would say that the make-up of Len Cariou (or George Hearn) and Angela Lansbury were also quite stark and totally different than most of the other characters in the musical.  Now, I haven't seen the film, but from seeing the trailer, I thought the leads looked about the way I would have expected them to look.

I just wonder why the make-up bothered you in the film, but not in the stage production?

I've enjoyed reading the various takes on SWEENEY TODD. I particularly liked TD's comments that one must pay attention. I think that's very true. This is not a mindless movie. The score requires engagement, something some movie-goers may not be accustomed to. It's much more than just a catchy tune. It needs a different sort of audience.

I also went to see SWEENEY today. But I didn't have the same reaction as DR MattH.  I just thought the movie was okay....Although i did see the trailer for MAMMA MIA and think that looks good!
But would you want to see them both on a double bill?

OK, here's a trivia question that may even stump Tomovoz:

what's the connection between Sergio Mendes and Wild, Wild West?

They were both shown in Brasil in '.66

"Boxing Day" here in OZ.
I shall be listening to the "Rothschilds"
I'd think for Boxing Day you'd want to listen to Golden Boy.

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Had a lovelier than lovely dinner at my best friend John's house. We had lasagna, of all things. I think that's a first (having lasagna for Christmas dinner), and I adored it. I had two huge helpings.

Also had a drink that's new to me: mint julep martini. Liked it a lot, but who has that many types of cordials to mix with the bourbon?
