Between all of our families---my father's, (lots of kids!) my mother's, Greg's, our clients and a few friends, we normally have a list of about 50 people on our list. So we rarely have the chance to shop for each other, and it's usually something practical we need anyway.

I have never figured out a way to make this list shorter!

DR Edisaurus, those 50 people already have the best gift anyway - they have you in their lives all year long!

I have found that most friends/family, when approached about cutting back on the holiday gift exchange, are only too glad to mutually curtail it!

DR Jennifer - ...It's all part of Tim Burton's style, his look.  I knew going in to the movie - well the theatre - that it was a Tim Burton film, and that would mean a lot of "touches".  As far as the makeup being distracting, well, there is a heightened look to most of the film: the scenery, the lighting, the costuming.  -Just look at all that CGI - well-done CGI in the opening sequence on the boat.  If anything, the stark makeup sets the characters of Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett apart from everyone else.

*That's also a major reason I went to see the movie a second time.  Besides being distracted by the two girls who were constantly chatting throughout the movie the movie, I also found myself being "distracted" by a lot of the Tim Burton-isms, all that style.  It was nice just to sit there and let the movie "happen" the second time.  I liked the movie a lot.  I'm still not sure I'd call it a great movie, and I'm pretty sure I would not call it a "masterpiece" (like A.O. Scott did in the NY Times). But it is a very good movie, and a wonderful adaptation of the stage musical.

DR edisaurus - 50?!?!?!  I have a hard enough time gathering the gifts for my nephew and three nieces.  Thankfully, my brothers and I stopped exchanging presents a couple of years ago - I think that coincided with the birth of the first son/nephew.  However, if we happen to come across something that someone else would like, well, we go ahead and get it for them.  But there's never a sense of "obligation" to give - or to exchange between us.

Birthdays, on the other hand, are a different story.

Hmm... I just checked the IBDB, and they don't list Show Boat opening 80 years ago.  However, when you bring up the show listing, it does say it opened on December 27, 1927.    *There is a notation that the entry has not been verified, and I'm also wondering since the show did not have any previews...

My favorite Christmas present, by far, was the soundtrack to my favorite movie, THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T, complete with cut songs, sent by our own bk. I've probably listened to it at least a dozen times already, but thankfully, in my car. Greg is the type of listener that doesn't want to hear something more than once at a sitting, where I will play a song 10 times in a row, listening to different details and would drive any normal person crazy.

That's kind of how it worked it my family after the kids started having kids.  The kids made out like bandits!  Since then, I quit paying attention to holidays, and if the right gift happened to be there for someone, I'd give it to them then and just ask them to act surprised  at Christmas.
