OK---so I know I'm in a room full of music lovers and critics, but I have to share this video. It's horribly shot, but it's my cousin's son (15 years old) singing and playing piano at a school talent show. He also writes piano music; he's done some great original rags in the style of Scott Joplin.

I think he's incredibly talented!

Michael Shayne:

Check your facts. Lindsay Anderson won the 1954 documentary short award for THURSDAY'S CHILDREN.

Interesting I looked up his awards and it did not mention that award. I was curious for what film he did win

Thanks, derB!

Welcome!

Maybe you can get me a gig doing a vocal under-score for a network series show - that seems to be where all the new pop stuff is being showcased now.

Good morning, Jose!

If you have a chance to look at the clip, I'd love to know what you think of my cousin's son's playing/singing. (Keeping in mind he was only 15 at the time...)

I see there's a Le Pain de Quotidien in the City of Studio. Wonder if bk has ever dined there?

Will do, DR edisaurus.  I just bookmarked it for now, and I'll check it out once I'm more awake... And once I find out if the coaching session I'm supposed to play today was/is taking place at 12:30, 1:00 or 1:30.... ???   (I was supposed to get a confirmation call yesterday, and I've already left messages this morning, so...)

Some observations on current voting patterns:

Last special election of a CA School Board Seat:

Registered Voters: 55,852
Ballots cast: 8968 (16% turnout)
Absentee Ballots: 5,082 (57%)
Winner: 3641 (41% of votes cast)

So - the winner was probably already decided before election day!

The heavy use of Absentee Ballots puts a very different spin on campaign game-plans;  the old-time conventional wisdom was to save your heavy guns for the week before election day.

NOTE 1. All this business about showing ID to vote is meaningless when most ballots are mailed in.

NOTE 2: Voters have been sending in ballots for weeks in the Florida Primary - the result may already be in the bag!

Well, I think I'm going to head in for the coaching, and, hopefully, catch it in progress or right at the beginning, so...

Nice singing DR EDISAURUS.

And please send a picture of the Squirrel Lamp when it is done.  You can also make ash trays out of rabbits, if you like.

It is FUN!!!!

Quite a pretty day here in the City of Studio.  I attended to a few things this morning and now am almost de-groggified and shall begin writing shortly.  I saved the wrap up/last paragraph of the current chapter, so that will only take a few minutes, then I'll go back and look at yesterday's pages, then mush on.

I bet you could even make ashtrays out of Macbeths!

And since I have a few spare minutes...

DR edisaurus - You have a talented cousin!  So, is he is still 15 now?  Do you happen to know if he plays by ear? or with music? or a combo of both?  He's definitely using the Michael Bublé arrangement of the song, but the published accompaniment of that song is not that filled out.  Good for him.  I also detect a bit of classical and/or show music "tendencies" in his voice.  Do you know if he take voice lessons?  All in all, a good performance.

I'm signing off for today.  I want to stop at the Staples at 35th and 8th Avenue to see if they have the storage boxes I want.  Then home to continue.

I'll be back tomorrow morning for a bit.  Tonight: NORTHANGER ABBEY on Masterpiece Theatre!

I've read several bombastic posts online from non-working WGA members saying people "they've" talked to think the DGA's deal is bad.  Now, the DGA is not a stupid union.  Unlike the WGA, they are simply not run by bombastic publicity-seeking people (rather like the stagehands union during their strike) - endless posturing.  One such non-working WGA member posted that the WGA "might" take the DGA deal but with MUCH better terms - is he insane?  In the end, they'll settle in the next two weeks and in the end it will either be the same deal as the DGA or one that is very similar.  But you watch - they will trumpet their deal and how happy they are - you wait and see.

It is sad about Suzanne Pleshette.

I didn’t realize she was married to Tom Poston.

Thanks for watching, Jose!

He's still in HS, but this may be his senior year. He also writes music and I think he studied classical music but he really seems to be fond of Gershwin and Joplin. I knew he could play well but I had never heard him sing before.

He and his brothers like to do short films so I sense he finds acting fun. He also did a great little stop-motion animation a few years ago for Christmas.

There are other clips on the YouTube link from his family, and there is another where he plays piano in a skit where he's a piano man and has some parody lyrics to popular songs. I wish the recording was better but you can still hear what a natural piano player he is.

A COLD day here, much like der B and Woody's, I would imagine--20's, but with a wind chill. Brrr. This house is drafty, so on windy days it's cold inside, desite my many attempts to close up the drafts.

My ancient computer is now doing some things I've never even seen before. I MUST get a new computer SOON! Do our Mac owners have any recommendations? I'm strongly leaning toward a Mac laptop, but haven't decided which model.
