THE TAPPAS BAR

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had variety and also the hollywood reporter, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in a tappas/tapas/topless bar enjoying themselves as only the trendy cows do.

Comments on the notes:

Quote
In any case, I know tapas bars have been around for many, many years in Spain, but why have they suddenly become the hip and trendy thing in LA? Because it had become the hip and trendy thing in NY?

LA maybe just late to the party. The Algeria Tapas Bar opened on Pine Ave. in downtown Long Beach in the fall of 2001 and and has been going hot and heavy ever since. Since both Woody and I like to surf-and-nosh, the Tapas enviroment is a real treat.

Quote
I find it decidedly peculiar that they would raze office buildings built in 1962 and replace them with car dealerships, but that seems to be what happened.

In California, considerable chunks of municipal dollars come from their share of the Sales Tax. It is decidedly to a community's advantage to replace non-sales tax generating properties like office buildings with big revenue engines like car dealerships and big box stores. Community Redevelopment Agencies often use tax-dollars to lure enterprises like car dealerships into their corporate boundaries.

Redevelopment Zones also allow a municipality to capture a goodly chunk of real estate taxes that would other wise go to the state - the trick is that the taxes have to be on "new properties" - so it is to a community's financial advantage to tear down perfectly good structures (both commercial and residential) and replace them with more up-scale structures and pocket all the Real Estate Tax increment dollars. I think about 75% of the entire city of Long Beach is divided up between various Redevelopment Zones. The sales-tax sharing puts constant pressure on communities to replace non-retail commercial and low-value residential units with shopping plazas and strip malls; and the lure of Real Estate Increment tax dollars puts pressure on communities to replace low value housing with up-scale units. (This is also the reason why Planning Boards discourage the construction of "affordable housing" - better to require apartment structures with lots of indoor parking, lofty atriums with commissioned art works, and a maximum number of out door amenities like BBQ areas.)

Any k. d. lang fans?

k.d. lang's love, loss and longing just right for Valentine’s Day

On “Shadow and the Frame,” lang recognizes the passage of time and the frailty of our existence, but in a “Circle of Life” way:

“The promise of my prime
Fading on the vine
But fallen days indeed
Are the seeds of time.”

For fans who want a little something extra, there are different versions of the album. iTunes features four live bonus tracks, including “I Dream of Spring” as well as hits “Hallelujah,” “Wash Me Clean,” and “The Valley.” A deluxe packaging includes a cloth cover for the album, three photo cards, a 16-page booklet, four bonus tracks, and an interview with Lang.

Tapas Bars have sort of been trendy in L.A. for a while.  However, most "tapas" places in L.A. preferred to labeled as "small plates" places.  Of course, in NYC right now, instead of a place being labeled an "Italian Tapas" or "Greek Tapas" or "Indian Tapas", they're all starting to be called by their actual ethnic-snack names: stuzzi, mezze, etc.  I'm guessing L.A. will pick up the trend in another 10 years or so.  ;)

Oh... And then there's the continuing boom of "wine bars" and the food that accompanying said pours of wine.

Oh... And I still find some places cross-labeling themselves in order to clarify their style, more or less: "It's like Spanish (or Indian or Mediterranean) dim sum."

In any case... As for the Topic of the Day...

The restaurant trends that I don't like include:

-smaller and smaller tables (with big and bigger plates)
-tin ceilings and hard floors to "promote" noise level
-upping the price of "comfort food" just because they know people will buy it
-using Sriracha (Rooster Sauce) as a plate garnish on every plate - that can come as a surprise at times!
-daily specials only being recited by the server and not listed anywhere else
etc., etc., etc.

As for cuisine trends and gimmicks, well, it's all part of the fun of dining out.  If they're meant to last they will, if not, the place will shutter pretty quickly nowadays.

Well, I need to finish getting ready for my day, as well as finish packing my bag for my trip back later this afternoon.  -And I also need to stop squinting since I still have yet to put my glasses on.  In any case... I'm sure I'll be checking back in here on my lunch break.
