In what must be a bit of reverse psychology, I find that listening to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings a few times will lift my mood. But I only use it when I'm really in the dumps.
Gawd, that's a downer piece of music! It's like flying, bird-like, over one of the bleakest, greyest landscapes imaginable on one of the bleakest, greyest, overcast days. Gorgeous, of course, but not in an uplifting way. Which is why it works.
