Yesterday, my very own der Brucer sort of mis-stated the recipe and origins of the Hangtown Fry.

Firstly:

Drain a dozen oysters on paper towels.  Dip each one in flour seasoned with salt and pepper, then in one well-beaten egg, and lastly in cracker crumbs.  Fry in heated butter for a few minutes until nicely browned on both sides.  Beat eight more eggs with salt and pepper, pour the eggs over the oysters and cook until firm on the bottom.  Turn with a large spatula and cook the second side a minute or two longer.  Serves four.

BK - I meant to ask you this yesterday, but since I forgot, and since today is now Ask BK Day, well...

Which recording of Thou Shalt Not were you listening too?  I'm guessing you were listening the one that was packaged with the Pajama Game revival:

As opposed to this one (which you can "click" for more info):

-Which was released as an "Only Available from Amazon.com" CD initially.  -It still may be. ???

As for last night's "American Idol"...  And I ain't postin' no stinkin' spoiler space...

Ms. Malubay needs to go home.  However, I have a feeling that she'll be hanging on for at least one more week.  I have a sense that all the various Phil-Am Associations have set up "calling parties".  ;)  ???  ::)

That's a very veiled reference which will become clear if you see Mr. Morelli.

There are two legends about the creation of the Hangtown Fry.  The first has to do with a miner during the gold rush who, having gathered up a fortune in the nuggets, went into a hotel in Hangtown (aka Placerville) and asked for the most expensive meal they had.  Since oysters and eggs were both frightfully expensive during the gold rush, he told the cook to put them together and serve 'em up!

I prefer the second story.  Placerville got it's nickname because of the number of hangings that took place there.  Anything to keep law and order, y'know.  A man had been unjustly convicted of murder, and was sentenced to hang.  For his last meal, he asked for a dish "that he'd had long ago," which just so happened to be made from the ingredients that were frightfully hard to come by in those gold rush times - eggs and oysters.  In the time that it took to find those ingredients, the man's friends were able to prove his innocence.  The cook, however, after having taken all the time and effort to get everything together, insisted that the man eat the dish anyway.  Lo and behold, he liked it, and the Hangtown Fry was born.

Final story about the Hangtown Fry:

Back when I was growing up, my father, an aeronautical engineer, would bring various and sundry Air Force test pilots home for dinner on occasion - a chance for them to have some home cooking rather than restaurant food.  My mother would either extend what she had planned for the family meal, or, if given enough of a heads-up, prepare a Hangtown Fry for the adults.  It was quite popular with those fly boys.

OK, not that much of a story, but it's the one I know for a fact to be true.

Oh, and the food sounds good, too.

Well, 'tis time for me to set about with the remainder of my morning ablutions, and then I shall venture forth to the subway to take the train downtown to Pearl Studios for the day.  -They have internet access there, however, I don't think they're set up to handle more then one or two people using their wireless at one time. ;)  We shall see...

DR elmore - I'm scheduled to be done at 5:00, so any time after 5:30, I'm guessing, will be a good time to meet for dinner if you are still so inclined.

You're in mourning for your life?

DR Jose, I have a meeting with Charlie Beale at 4:00 about Duke Ellington and I hope we are finished by 5:30! Call me when you're out of auditions.

Good morning, all! I have some work on the LADY OF TH SLIPPER critical notes today, and a round of pesticide mopping, after which I may escape to the NYPL for a while.
