Wow! I used to live at 16 W 16th Street(The Chelsea Lane) I was one of their first tenants

Arnold, when you moved in was Xavier still the old school facility or had they already torn it down and built the new building? I have pictures of the old structure as well. The block has changed a lot (obviously) since the early 1900s. There was a restaurant at one point at 55 W. 16th (again I have a picture) and some of the brownstones had gorgeous detail, now all stripped and modernized.

Murray Sidlin, conductor

Murry worked in Portland forever.  He helped me track down Irwin Shaw's unpublished play "The Quiet City," which Frances starred in (briefly--two performances) in 1939.  Murry did the first production of the play since the Broadway run, and restored the original Copland underscore.

Mr. Sardonicus

In the weird but true synchronicity department, I just this morning received an email from a woman whose email address was Mrs. Sardonicus.  Said woman took me to task for not mentioning in my Farmer article that Frances' appearances on Ed Sullivan featured her singing "a demeaning religious tune" and that she went on the show to prove she believed in G-d.  Of course, the fact that Frances sang "Aura Lee" and "Red River Valley", and never mentioned the Deity in either of her appearances, didn't seem to matter to Mrs. Sardonicus.   ;D

Has

Morley Safer

been mentioned yet.

Who can quote the episode of Maude with the clever play on Morley Safer's and Dan Rather's names?

Murry did the first production of the play since the Broadway run, and restored the original Copland underscore.

And he was also instrumental in developing, performing, and recording the chamber orchestration of Copland's opera, The Tender Land.  Reducing the full orchestra to a configuration equivalent to the original small orchestration for "Appalachian Spring".

The interesting thing to me about this initial game is how many big names are still unearthed by DRs, even later in the day when one might think that the topic had been exhausted!  :)

I walked out to the garage to package stuff to find a whole stack of boxes had toppled over.  It was a hideous mess and took me an hour to clean up.  It's fine now, but not pleasant.  I then shipped packages, now have to go pick up mail.  Also, there has been a huge volley of e-mails back and forth with the LA Festival of New Musicals, the Chance, and moi.

Yes, the Blue Valley Deli is still on the corner of 16th & 6th. It's been renovated but it's still there.

No, I would not.  It's a Panasonic DMR-EH50.  The significant part of it is that it has a hard drive.  There are a lot of DVD burners out there without hard drives, so you can only just record directly to DVDs without the ability to edit.  And from what Ruth said, they're not making the hard drive burners anymore. :-\ I think that they expect that everyone will now do all their editing on their super-dooper computers.  Maybe someday I'll get a new super-dooper computer, but I don't have one now.

Mine is also a Panasonic so I'd be very surprised if you see any significent difference between XP and SP.

The TV GUIDE ON LINE service works well with the hard disc drive making it a very competent DVR.

I believe my dishwasher takes from 60-70 minutes for the normal wash/dry cycle.

I let der Brucer handle the dishwasher.

I scrub the pots and pans by hand.

When I got home, I watched DIRT! which was the season finale and likely the series finale, too. The show had filmed seven episodes when the writers' strike hit, and during the strike, FX decided to simply call it a day with seven episodes for the season. I have a feeling this will be all for the show.

Disappointing because I didn't feel very satisfied with any of the storylines except Lucy's. It's obvious that several other stories which were on-going would have been extended in additional episodes, so I was not very pleased with this serving as a wrap-up.

However, there has been no formal cancellation notice yet, so I'll keep my eyes open to read any news of note about the show's future.

Next I watched DEATH OF A CYCLIST which I had never seen before. If this had been made in Hollywood rather than in Spain, I could see Barbara Stanwyck or Joan Crawford playing the femme fatale in this decided melodrama. A decent enough film, made by a Communist director of note, but usually Criterion choses movies of a slightly loftier stature than this.

There is only one bonus feature on the disc, a documentary on the life and times of the director, and I'm a little more than halfway through watching that. Lots of talking heads and surprisingly, this featurette is not anamorphic, rare for a Criterion bonus filmed in widescreen.
