IN THE ZONE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in the zone, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're intrigued by greener pastures and might just be on their collective way.

Alvin Colt, 92; Tony-winning costume designer outfitted more than 50 Broadway showsFrom the Associated Press

May 6, 2008

NEW YORK — Alvin Colt, a Tony-winning costume designer whose work spanned more than 60 years of theater from "On the Town" to the "Forbidden Broadway" revues, has died at 92.

Colt died Sunday at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, said Susan Noack, his niece.

"Alvin Colt was a huge icon in the world of theatrical design," said designer Bob Mackie. "He had great style and humor in his professional and private life. He was a gentleman, and he certainly was a hero of mine."

Colt's first show was "On the Town," the 1944 musical about sailors on a 24-hour shore leave in New York. It was also the Broadway debut of its authors, composer Leonard Bernstein and lyricists Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

Among the more than 50 shows Colt worked on during his lengthy career were "Guys and Dolls" (1950), "Top Banana" (1951), Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Pipe Dream" (1955) -- for which he won a Tony -- "The Lark" (1955), "Li'l Abner" (1956), "Destry Rides Again" (1959) and "Here's Love" (1963).

In his later years, Colt was known for his outlandish costumes for "Forbidden Broadway," a long-running series of revues that spoof Broadway shows.

I have two of Mr. Colt's original costume sketches from the Broadway production of Li'l Abner hanging on my walls - one for Mammy Yokum (Charlotte Rae) and one for dancer Dee Dee Wood (soon to become Dee Dee Breaux).

EIGHT BELLES' TRAINER DEFENDS JOCKEY

May 6, 2008

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The trainer of euthanized filly Eight Belles adamantly defended the way jockey Gabriel Saez handled the Kentucky Derby runner-up.

In an interview with The Associated Press today, Larry Jones said Saez applied the whip only to prevent Eight Belles from crashing into the rail.

"This filly in every race has tried to drift toward the rail," Jones said. "It's her comfort zone, and Gabriel knows this. This kid made every move the right move, and I hate it that they're wanting to jump down his throat. He did not try to abuse that horse to make her run faster. He knew he was second best, that she wasn't going to catch Big Brown."

Jones spoke while traveling from Churchill Downs to Delaware with his other prized filly, Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell. Jones is scheduled to have a news conference Tuesday morning near the paddock at Delaware Park.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals called for Saez to be suspended, contending he should have noticed an injury and pulled the horse up rather than applied the whip.

In a statement today, Saez said Eight Belles never indicated anything was wrong.

"All I could sense under me was how eager she was to race," Saez said. "I was so proud of her performance, and of the opportunity to ride her in my first Kentucky Derby, all of which adds to my sadness."

Eight Belles broke both front ankles while galloping out a quarter-mile past the finish line and was euthanized on the track. Alex Waldrop, president of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, said there will be an autopsy to determine cause of death.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death?

Hint: Drug Overdose -  The Vet did it! (And there are 1000s of witnesses)

It's almost time to get ready for work, another early start.

I need to find me a new calculator.  The one I took with me from my old job in California isn't working.  I think one of the dogs must have peed on it.   :P

Oh my "Hail to the Chief" in two keys at once.  Interesting.  Years ago I posted a clip of a "Hallelujah Chorus" gone horribly wrong, and now I can't find it again.....so I stopped looking....sounded great until the last few notes when the organist went south, the choir followed.

Good morning, all! I'm off to do some brain surgery and worl on an appendix of The Lady of the Slipper. My mother would be thrilled to find her medical dreams for me fulfilled.

I was so excited last night over the past Sunday's episode of THE TUDORS that I went ahead and watched next week's episode on Showtime on Demand. The most moving epsode yet, it covers the events of January 1536.  Our Queen Anne Boleyn is becoming quite a shrew, and that seems to be rather accurate, but Princess Elizabeth seems older than she actually was at her mother's execution. I'm also enjoying Peter O'Toole's Pope Clement.

DR singdaw, having seen the wonderful Glynis Johns and the original cast, I'd rather see someone like Blythe Danner, Christine Baranski, or Annette Bening as Desiree than one of my least favorite people.
