Ron, did you catch up on yesterday's posts?  There's a present for you.

We have received no IRS letter and our check is supposedly due next week.  I'm starting to get a little freaked about it.

I have not caught up.  I forgot.  Oh! Yes! I forgot (I do hope Jose can forgive me forgetting!).

But Oh! Joy!  THANKS, Jeff!

Did I mention (I forget!  Yes, I do forget!) that I received a nice letter from the IRS Saturday telling me that my "economic stimulus check" will be mailed June 27th?

It's a nice amount.  It's not the max.  It's not the minimum.  But it's nice.

A Magnavox Blu-ray player ($298) would be well within those limits.

Well, I guess I'll head down to check the mail and then start thinking about what's for lunch.

I cleaned the den this morning, so at least that chore is done.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm eating my oatmeal.  -Yes, Virginia, they have oatmeal in Florida too.  ;)

I'm so groggy I read this as "I'm eating my ointment."

I got up, then fell back asleep for twenty minutes, hence my being so groggy that I think people are eating their ointment.

Our very own JMK in his otherwise excellent review of Fanny, wrote: "Technicolor by the 1960s just wasn't what it used to be, and this particular film seems to be a bit on the yellow side."

This is the sort of statement that causes so much confusion and misinformation about transfers and color, and it should be amended immediately.  IB Technicolor prints in the 1960s were amazingly beautiful.  That was how Fanny was printed and it had no yellow/orange bias at all in the IB prints.  What you are talking about here is a TRANSFER element problem, not a photography problem.  They were given an incorrectly timed element and didn't do anything to help it in the telecine room - it's that simple.  It has nothing to do with the great Cardiff original photography or how the original IB prints looked (which Cardiff approved).  For years, this was a problem on Cardiff's masterpiece, Black Narcissus - the elements used for various transfers were on the yellow side or even the green side.  Everyone incorrectly assumed that that was the way Tech was back then, just because they'd never seen a true IB Tech print of it and because those transfers were otherwise excellent (not the Criterion, which was and is terrible).  When the French DVD came out two years ago we finally had a great transfer that actually looked like the film's original look and it was amazing.  DVD is never going to replicate exactly, but this French DVD came close.

Point being, take some of that yellow/orange out of the Fanny transfer, and voila, you're much closer to the original look of the IB prints.

Ginny, I hope everything is ok. I'm surprised they don't do a blood test today to see what's going on.

Well, they did move the next scheduled test up a day.  And adjusted the dosage downward for today.  Oy.

Robert A. Harris has a column up at TheDigitalBits.com where he discusses some of the problems being forced upon Blu-ray DVDs with unwitting persons insisting on total grain removal -- the main topic of discussion is the Blu-ray DVD of "Patton" and Harris' being appalled at how it looks on a large screen with all the "work" that has been done on it.

He says that the studios are preparing pristine masters but that the folks at the tail end of the process don't really know what they should be doing or how to do it.

It's worth checking out!

The smoke from the fires -- and to answer a question asked of me last evening, the fires seem to be all "around" the Bay area, but are primarily to the north and east -- is still making life here rather difficult, especially in the "respiratory" department.

People are being strongly advised to curtail outside exercise activities and to avoid outside dining until air quality drastically improves.

Aesthetically, everything outside has a golden glow.  One might say, "Oh! How pretty!" until one got a whiff of what is making everything look golden.

I watched "America's Got Talent" last night....and I hope things pick up next week.  There was some good talent in there, but there was far too much crap.  And all those cuts to Jerry Springer for his comments are absolutely ludicrous.

A Magnavox Blu-ray player ($298) would be well within those limits.

Is that a new model complete with all the necessary bells and whistles to enjoy all the perks of the Blu-ray discs?

Did anyone who watched "America's Got Talent" find the Traubl family a bit odd, if endearing?

I remember the brouhaha I caused about The Searchers transfer, which is one of the most shameful color transfers ever of a classic film, especially one photographed by Winton Hoch.  Everyone came on to those boards and castigated me and said I didn't know what I was talking about, even though not ONE of these people had ever seen the film in a theater.  I said the color on the laserdisc was much closer to the way the film should look, instead of the yellow/green mess that Warners gave us.  Sharp?  Absolutely.  Gorgeously sharp.  Green/yellow skies - sorry, should be BLUE just like they were on the laserdisc.  Mr. Harris finally showed up and said that I knew what I was talking about.  Warners also read the various threads, and someone high up there told Mr. Harris that they hadn't used the studio's IB Tech reference print as a reference - some idiot telecine person had gone his own way and made it look more like one of today's films.  At that point, Mr. Harris said they were going to fix it for the Blu-Ray/HD discs.  Then Ned Price probably realized how annoying that would be to all of us who'd bought the standard DVD and that he'd probably have to replace everyone's discs, and this guy backtracked and said as far as he was concerned the color was correct, even if they hadn't used the reference print and even though this transfer looked nothing like the reference print (the reference print was used to time the laserdisc transfer).  And so everyone who loves The Searchers got a transfer that basically looks nothing like it should.  But because it's SHARP everyone goes ooh and aah - the color doesn't seem to actually matter.  My point is that those same exact people would go ballistic if The Searchers had bee re-mixed into 5.1 and the original mono track hadn't been included, or if it had been transferred in the wrong ratio.  Well, correct color is just as important as the latter two items.
