DR Matt H, I used to watch THE TRANSFORMERS with Bryan & Craig.  It was fun reading your posts.

Thank you, DR Jane. I'm sure the audience for these cartoons will LOVE them. I'm giving this 7-disc set plus an earlier TRANSFORMERS "movie" (3 TV episodes combined into a 60 minute movie) to best friend John's 8-going-on-9 year old. He's the PERFECT age for them, and I know he'll have a blast watching them.

(When I reviewed five sets of POWER RANGER DVDs last year, I gave them to him, and John said you couldn't pull him from the TV.)

I began my afternoon by watching the second half of MONK that didn't get recorded by the DVR the other night. Did fine this morning when it was rerun, and I enjoyed the episode more than I expected to even if there were some ridiculous plot missteps.

How did Monk not freak out having to drag himself through all that plaster dust and dirt when he has to use a wipe anytime his hands touch anything?

Monk was once a real police detective. Why didn't he drag himself into the room and disarm the man (Brad Garrett) who was going to shoot them once he had knocked him out (particularly since it was clear they weren't getting out of the house any time soon)?

Just dumb!

I watched about 15 more minutes of FEAR ITSELF, and it's a frustrating story jumping back and forth in time as it's doing. I'll finish it at some point since I have so little left to go, but despite a good scare or two so far, it's not among the better episodes.

Then, I watched Akira Kurosawa's HIGH AND LOW. I'd never seen it before.

In a word, masterpiece. A 143-minute crime drama-procedural that's so riveting I lost all track of time, and it was over before I knew it.

And the transfer is just superb. With lots of tight knit lines that on lesser encodes would be aliasing all over the place, there wasn't a second of line twitter.

Why can't all movies be this good?

Then, I started on the audio commentary and got thirty minutes of it heard. It's an expert track as well offering analysis of the camera techniques, background on the principal actors and their past and future work in Kurosawa films, background on the novel Kurosawa used to concoct the first hour of the movie, and so much more.

This is one GREAT set.

When I go back down and get my cleaning chores done, I'll start on the second disc in the set. Can't wait to see what other goodies Criterion has packed into this release.

From what I've read, "The Fly", the musical, should look to the finale of the original film's finale and should start screaming, "Sombody help me....PLEA-SE-SE-SE-SE!"

I thought THE FLY was an opera?

Hot 'n' humid here in SW Ohio, too, and gloomy, like it's gonna rain.  Which, I have a feeling, won't cool things off at all - just ruin the big finale to the hot air balloon festival that's been going on all weekend.

Trade ya  ;D

We had a thunderstorm last night about 7:00 PM with high winds, quarter sized hail and torrential rains.  I wasn't planning to go to Sideshow because I was still transcribing a witness interview off a DVD, but I was really glad I didn't go after the storm hit.  There were limbs down, some trees down and I was very happy to be at home working away

Today is the beginning of the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.  It started between here and Omaha.  There have been severe thunderstorms today between here and Omaha.  Hope the thousands of bike riders have found shelter.
