Re:  ALW.  I have long said that JCS is an unmitigated piece of genius, after which Sir Andrew suffered some sort of cerebral hemmorhage which affected his compositional prowess.

The funny thing about this Revue (for me, anyway) is the AD is absolutely anal about everything being "logical" and "making sense," (since he insisted we write the show around the set), which took major finagling on my part, and yet he doesn't seem bothered by the fact that a little Bus Stop in Podunkville has a concert grand sitting in the middle of the restaurant area.  As I stated to one of the singers last night, "just in case Dame Kiri drops by for an impromptu concert."  :)

I wonder what some of the problem now being seen in community theaters -- lack of discipline/focus/consideration for others -- can be linked to.

When I read JRand's posts about his experiences, I recall my long-past experiences and I know none of that shoddy behavior would have been tolerated past the first occurrence.  And it makes me wonder if "things" have gotten to the point where theaters "have" to tolerate it, to an extent, just to get enough people to do shows.

I know most of the folks I did theater with over the years have either  retired or work only on occasion in theater.  Loss of experience among a veteran corps, plus this anything-goes no-discipline attitude that young people seem imbued with from birth -- and which is often nurtured in the homes and in the schools -- can really take its toll on the arts when talent isn't nurtured with discipline.  I cannot imagine a symphony conductor, or a ballet director, or an opera conductor tolerating such things.   There are, of course, "star" egos and diva attitudes, but one would presume that such behavior gets tolerated because of boxoffice drawing power.  Do such things exist in community theater among locals?

I've known some divas, of course, but they were quite soon properly adjusted by the rest of the cast and by a sudden appearance of an understudy going through their blocking.

Are there other thoughts -- or, good ideas -- out there as to what's going on that makes such experiences as Jack's more commonplace than rare?

TOD:  Favorite Andrew Lloyd Weber songs?  That's too much of an oxymoron for me.   I am proud to see I have always trashed Andrew Lloyd Weber, and he has yet to do much of anything to convince me otherwise.

I like some Andrew Lloyd Webber. I'm too tired and sneezy to think of anything in particular right now.

Am I remembering correctly?  Did there used to be a salad dressing called "Goddess"?
Green Goddess

A sort of creamy ranch dressing that was slighlty green (avocadoes perhaps?)

Actually-- to clarify, I think much of what he does actually works in the shows themselves--in context.  However, there are not many of his songs that really stand out on their own.

I don't know that one can point to any one cause, DR Ron Pulliam, but you do see this general "attitude" among the young in many areas besides the arts.  In the public school classroom; in restaurants.  This generalized sense of entitlement and lack of respect for others is a very troublesome development.

Would you know an ALW song if you heard one, though?

I would have no clue.

I have noticed in both professional and community theater there seems to be a different work ethic these days - not from everyone - there are still hard-working actors and actresses, but I've been shocked by some of the behavior I've seen, not to mention the appalling regularity with which young Broadway performers miss shows.  These people should get down on their knees and thank the Lord they are on Broadway, but they behave as if they were entitled to be there and can behave any way they like.  If it were me, I would fire any actor who missed shows repeatedly, especially this current group of non-stars.

I wonder:  If we developed a new cable show called Rant-O-Rama, and allowed anyone to come on each week and rant about any topic they wanted, whether anyone would watch such a show?

You could hold AUDITIONS all over the country for such a show....thousands would turn out for their chance to do a rant.

It's truly sad when this afflicts professional theater.

I probably mentioned this before, but I am going to mention it one more time:

During a tennis tournament in San Francisco in the mid-1990s (I believe it was sponsored by Virginia Slims at the time), Martina Navratilova was playing.

The referee who sits at the net line called one of her balls "out."  She claimed it was on the line, and he countered "It was out by 8 inches."

Navratilova was heard muttering: "Yeah...and men have been telling women it was 8 inches since the beginning of time!"
