Someone just sent me this in an e-mail.  I believe it is referring to students starting college in 2007, but even so it is pretty depressing.

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1989.

1) They are too young to remember the space
Shuttle blowing up.
2) Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
 3) Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.
 4) The CD was introduced the year they were born.
 5) They have always had an Answering Machine.
 6)  They have always had cable.
 7)  They cannot fathom not having a remote control.
8 )  Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
 9)  Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
10) They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
11) They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.
12) They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
13) They never heard: "Where's the Beef?","I'd walk A mile for a Camel", or "de plane, Boss, de plane."
14) They do not care who shot J. R. And have no idea who J. R. Even is.
15) McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
16) They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

Just tell them you are starting a new fad

Well, now the fad I can start is leaving one strap on your sandals unfastened.

I eat fish. But I'd rather have avocado in the salad dressing. I love avocado.

Me too!  Now I'm in the mood for a slice of avocado.  If I'm lucky there is still some in the frig.

I think it was Stephen King who wrote in the Dark Tower series, "The world has moved on."

Wonderful Idea.  I'm watching Big Brother, I have absolutely no idea why.  I really don't like anyone except Jerry and Renny.

Topic of the Day:  Here are some of my favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber songs (in alphabetical order):

  • As If We Never Said Goodbye
  • Buenos Aires
  • Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad
  • Cold (from Whistle Down the Wind) - when I first heard the "Songs From..." version sung by the Everly Brothers, I thought that it was a real Everly Brothers song and that ALW had just gotten the rights to the song (I hadn't looked at the songwriting credits, yet)
  • Don't Cry for Me Argentina
  • Everything's Alright
  • Freight
  • Half a Moment
  • Love Changes Everything
  • The Music of the Night - although the version called "Married Man" from an early version of Aspects of Love with lyrics by Trevor Nunn is good, too
  • A New Argentina
  • Our Kind of Love - this should be the anthem for the same-sex marriage debate...in favor of, of course ;)
  • Prima Donna
  • Sunset Boulevard
  • This Time Next Year
  • U.N.C.O.U.P.L.E.D.
  • Waltz for Eva and Che
  • With One Look (mostly Patti's version)
I also love the ALW trio from "My Favorite Broadway:  The Leading Ladies," Where Audra McDonald sang "Love Changes Everything," Marin Mazzie sang "Unexpected Song" and Judy Kuhn sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" all at the same time. ;D

And speaking of "My Favorite Broadway:  The Leading Ladies," the DVD is out of print and copies from the Amazon Marketplace sellers start at $49.99!  And the most expensive one is $189.99!! :o Does anyone really think that they're going to sell them at those prices?? :P

Laura and George, you're both missing the point.

The anchovy is not there as a major player in the dressing.  If you didn't know it was there, you would never think "Aha, there's anchovy in this dressing!"  It is a background player, something that makes everything else taste great.

This could be an example of umami, that ineffable taste that has been getting all kinds of attention lately in the cooking world.  It's something found in soy sauce, mushrooms, tomatoes, Parmesan cheese, and a lot of other odd places.  It gives food a feeling of being something "more", of having a fullness and yumminess.  And it's absolutely terrible when over-used, or tasted on it's own, because the main chemical component is MSG.

But it works in small amounts, as something in the background.

Jose might have something more to say about this.

I know Jeffrey Steingarten wrote an entire article about MSG, because it's in that book I'm reading.  He wondered why, if MSG is supposed to cause so many headaches from people eating Chinese food, why doesn't the entire country of China suffer from continual headaches?

Personally, I'm not attracted to adding MSG in it's chemical form to the food I serve to der Brucer.  But I do like to use the natural sources where it is found as ingredients in my cooking.

BTW, all those Doritos and potato chips that come in flavors like BBQ and Sour Cream and Chive and Super Cheesey and on and on and on...

Guess what!  They're loaded with MSG.  Check the ingredient lists on those bags of chips next time you crave a snack.

Give me anchovies, olives, and all those other natural ingredients any time!

(Although, natural-flavored Cheetoes does sound like another oxymoron, doesn't it???!!!)

Actually, I do understand.  When I said I don't like anchovies or olives, I did mean that I don't like them on their own.  I like Caesar salad (although I have had the "real" thing only once) and I've had chopped olives in...something that I can't remember right now, but my niece and my mom LOVE olives and will just eat them right out of the can.  That I don't like. :P

Spent almost the entire evening with THE HILLS.  I got through episode18 so I have 10 more episodes to go.

The dramatic situations are so obviously manipulated (sworn enemies just "happening" to meet at the same restaurant at the same time on the same night).

I'm kind of astonished that there really isn't a person of color in this cast. And the guys don't seem to have jobs or at least if they do, they never talk about them.

I was pleased to see the girls actually being shown being good at their jobs. They seem such air-heads otherwise, so it did permit me to see that they can be professional and responsible on the job.

To give myself a break from the synthetic drama of THE HILLS, I put in WILL & GRACE again and watched two more episodes.

The first was the one with Steven Tobilowsky (I know that's not the right spelling) as the new upstairs neighbor.

Not a good episode.

The second was Will's birthday episode when, after a birthday fraught with disappointment, he gets the key to Vince's apartment, and kisses him, one of the few male-male kisses ever on WILL & GRACE during its entire eight season run.
