DR Jennifer,
I'm reviewing THE HILLS because Paramount studio releases are my assignment. It has nothing to do with trying to match a reviewer to the target audience of a release. Impossible to do with every release and not the way criticism works. There isn't a single film, theater, book, or music critic to my knowledge that's the perfect audience for every release in his chosen area. Part of being a professional is being able to ascertain the strong and weak points of a given release regardless of its innate appeal to one personally and then to be able to express those feelings through one's writing.
For example, in the last six months, I've had to review both SWEENEY TODD and SHINE A LIGHT. One is Stephen Sondheim and the other is the Rolling Stones. Everyone here knows precisely which one I would gravitate to on my own were I watching just for fun. But guess what? SHINE A LIGHT got a very positive write-up from me even though I don't give rock music a second thought in my personal life. I do have the ability to separate my own personal choices for entertainment to what I'm watching for a professional purpose.
The fact that I find the drama of THE HILLS obviously manufactured, the set-ups for confrontation contrived, and the conflicts and arguments rather lame is an opinion only, not meant to insult fans of the show. Doesn't mean the show can't be entertaining for others, but the fact that it is MTV's most popular show with its target female 12-34 age group doesn't mean the show is any less synthetic and manipulative. In fact, that's the MAJOR part of its appeal.
