Ron - It's important to make 12000 count, so shouldn't it be about something important?

I think almost everyone finds that remakes and redos of things they've seen the originals of are lacking in various ways.

I've never been satisfied with any recording of "Follies" other than the original.  I had the score LP with me on my first overseas tour of duty.  When I bought my first component stereo system, it was "Follies" that was played on it the first time.

I cannot imagine ever being satisfied with any performance that doesn't equal or surpass what I can hear on that cast recording.

That said, I don't think any of the screaming, cheering fans at revivals/revisals deserve rebuke or disdain.  They've never seen the original.  That they are listeing to and loving a Sondheim score performed live should be more reason for celebration rather than censure.

Most people never get to see the original Broadway production of anything.  If one were to insist upon equal/better treatment of the material, no revival/revisal would "ever" be done.  And that would be tragic.

Spot on. I will say, though, that if the production is at all professional, I almost always have found something interesting and different about it, even if it doesn't match up with the original.

There were several moments in the Roundabout Follies that I thought were wonderful and searing (Joan Roberts, the original Laurie in Oklahoma, singing "One More Kiss," the Ben/Sally ghost embrace, Judith Ivey's haunting "Losing My Mind," and damned if the final exit didn't have me bawling both times I saw it), but it's a hard show to make work.

Sometimes, with revivals, I sometimes think the less the director knows, the better. I've seen a bunch of productions of Company, and the two best ones were ones where the director got the hell out of the way of the production and just presented the story without apology (For my money, Sam Mendes's concept was an abomination that made the show more dated than it had any right being). The best Bobby I ever saw was in an amateur production, played by an actor who hadn't been on stage in over a decade, but who absolutely nailed the character.

I've also had the thrill of seeing several classic performers reprise their songs decades later (Pam Myers with "Another Hundred People," Donna McKechnie with "Music and the Mirror," Priscilla Lopez with "Nothing," and Comden & Green with most of their club act), and I will treasure those memories till the day I die.

I have no problem with screaming cheering fans IF the screaming and cheering is earned, which this was not.  They came to scream and cheer at their favorite performers and because many of them are youngsters who've been raised on American Idol and think that that sort of behavior in the theater is appropriate.  In the case of what I was hearing on this Encores Follies DVD, it doesn't sound like they're cheering the material so much as the "event" and their favorite people.  I can also guarantee you that that sort of overt, insane overreaction was normally NOT part of the original production, except for the closing weeks, when it was all fans of the show, and even then I'd guess it didn't approach this crazy sort of overreaction we have today.

Tragic consequences for a mother of three and grandmother of one...I am sad to see that AOL published this photo.  Other people in the same circumstance certainly have more privacy than a celebrity does - but seeing that she is cared for and alive is something, I guess.

Prayers can help.  Annette lost her dear mother last year, her second marriage has been rocky since then, but all three of her children and her ex-husband Jack are a great support group.

She of course has her fans, which must be small recompense to her now - but she was an important icon of her generation, and certainly went as far as a little talent and some great looks could take her.  Whatever it is that makes the public respond to you, Annette had it.

By all accounts she is a sweet person, and true friend, and a great mother.

She is almost like a member of the family to some of us.  And I hate to think of the day when we'll read her final headline.   :'(

I didn't mean to slight her husband Glen Holt who has supported her through years of MS and its consequences.  He is very close to her, even though they don't officially share the house....he lives on his ranch while Annette is in town.

Again, to be clear, since what I wrote seems to be going in a direction I didn't intend - I have NO problems with revivals that are GOOD, EXCELLENT, or GREAT.  If I see one like that, my memories of the original (if I have seen it) go right out the window.  If the director presents the show in a good staging, and he understands the show, and the cast is terrific, great.  I found none of those things in evidence about this Follies.  I'm not generalizing (which is what RLP's post makes it seem like) - I'm talking about THIS Follies (and to a lesser extent a couple of other Follies) that simply don't work.  If they work for others, that's great.  I have an acute ear, audience reaction-wise, and for me it's very easy to tell who the people are who've come there to scream and whoop no matter WHAT is being presented to them.

I saw a theater in the round production of The Most Happy Fella - I'd grown up listening to its cast album, of course - it was amazing.  Why?  Because the director knew what the show was about and presented it.  Why else?  Because Robert Weede and Art Lund were recreating their roles ten years later.  Why else?  Because every other member of that cast was on the same page as the director and the two stars.

I've seen other productions of other classics that were every bit as good as the original.  So, let's not misrepresent what my thoughts in today's notes were about.

Well I am officially quite excited.  The church where I Music Direct has a huge, auditorium-like performing space and I suggested when they hired me we should do an annual fundraising concert series.  I have called in a lot of favors and we have an incredible series booked.  Some of these names some of you will know, but all of them are A-listers in the Northwest, and several are nationally and internationally famous.

September Susannah Mars
October  a little guy named JMK and his bossa nova group
November  Tobias Andersen in "Darrow"
December  pianist John Nilsen
January  Linda Hornbuckle with multi-Grammy nominee Janice Scroggins
February Melinda Strobel in "Women of the Wild West"
March  John Doan
April  an Improv group someone else booked, so I'm clueless :P
May  internationally famous mime Daniel Stein in Timepiece*
June  pianist Michael Allen Harrison

Whom shall I book for the second season?  Oy!

*Curious if any of you Angelinos or NYC-ites know or have seen Danny in performance.  He is probably the most famous mime in the world post-Marceau.  And guess what?  He's DW Betsy's cousin!
