TOD:

cd:
BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS - OST with bonus tracks.   8)

dvd(s):

CASINO ROYALE - recharges the Bond franchise and moves like there's no tomorrow.  Thankfully, it also allows for some very good character work between action set-pieces.

GYPSY - the infamous Papermill Production starring Miss Betty Buckley.  Her Rose is smart, savvy, sexy and sung brilliantly.  Deborah Gibson is a surprisingly good Louise.

book(s):
THE NIGHT LIVES ON - Walter Lord's follow-up to A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.
THE SECRET SERVANT - Daniel Silva's continuing story of art restorer/Israeli spy Gabriel Allon.

. . .earlier this week I almost finished F. Paul Wilson's "Repairman Jack" novels, the last one doesn't come out in paperback until later this year. . . :'(

And while I'm on a Summer Shorts shill-fest, here's the New York Post  three-out-of-four star review for the Summer Shorts 2 Series A, featuring (among many other wonderful talents) Amy Irving:

As for the Friday Media Check...

CD:
"Evening Primrose"
Forbidden Broadway: Rude Awakening - I am so glad they included the spoof on The Light in the Piazza among the bonus tracks. And I'm also very happy to hear my friend, Jared Bradshaw, on his first cast album.
Passing Strange OCR

And the winner of this week's most groovin' disc goes to...

"Who'll Speak for Love - The Burt Bacharach Songbook, Vol. II" - Trijntje Oosterhuis (Traincha) and the Metropole Orchestra. I am definitely going to see about finding Volume I now. :)

I have tried many times, DR Jose, to listen to PASSING STRANGE.  I have yet to finish it.  Perhaps it'll be one of those cds that sits on my shelf just like MARIE CHRISTINE and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN - actually I've made it the whole way through the latter.

Jose - I was thinking about the roulade table, but never the roulette table.

Sweet or savory? Chocolate or beef?

I'm watching "Inside daisy Clover" again.  I t could have bee great like the book had Gavin Lambert followed the book instead of writing a new screenplay,  Natalie Wood is brilliant as often; Ruth Gordon is perfect, and the locations and sets are wonderful.  I could wax infititum about them and about their uses in other films.

I'm listening to various Haines CD's, "The Letter" again, parts of "Judy at Carnegie Hall,"  watching most of Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall and wishing such things were still possible.

Friday morning greetings!  Today's an information waitressing day for me.  Full moon tomorrow - but we didn't need to look that up anywhere.

It's definitely one of those pieces that is/was not for everyone, and even the cast album was recorded live it worked much better in the theatre. The world and community that was created in the theatre just can't be duplicated on disc. I didn't love the show, but I got it.

And as for Marie Christine, I don't even know where my copy is. And since Virgin puts shelving dates on their inventory, I can tell they've had the same copy in the bins for at least three years.

DR George - Thanks for the First Preview Report. -And judging from some of my friend's status reports on Facebook, it looks they appreciated you (the audience) too.

*And Chris Sieber has been previewing his "short look" too. Very cute.

Jose - as between chocolate and beef, definitely chocolate.

I'm more the crepes table at the Paris Hotel than the craps table anywhere else.

We saw the print edition of the Variety review.  Very prominent picture of Stephanie D'Abruzzo and Jonathan Kaplan in Plaisir D'Amour along with the review.

Good morning!

Another cool night (it rained briefly last night) and another morning having the windows and doors open to fresh air. As long as this lasts, I'm going to be really enjoying it.

GEORGE,
Re: the lost parking ticket. That happened to me once, too. They are very easy to lose. My car has a little thingy near the radio/CD player that I think was intended for a pen, but it works perfectly for holding my parking ticket while I'm in the car. That works out well for me. I did eventually find the lost parking ticket; it was under the driver's seat--and I had looked there, too! When I drop things in the car they usually fall between the consol and the driver's seat; I know that know from experience! I also have a secure spot in my purse for such items. Again, not foolproof, but a help.

I must be the only person on earth who actually quotes Marie Christine. Didn't get a chance to see it, but there are some songs and passages in the score that I absolutely love. For my money, if LaChiusa could ever spend ten minutes editing his friggin' lyrics (or, better yet, get a decent lyricist to work with him) and taking some advice on how to actually entertain an audience, he'd be one of the best theatrical composers out there. That being said, on to the TOD.

On the iPod: Hairspray cast recording, The Little Mermaid (Israeli soundtrack), Parvarim (Israeli folk duo) box set
The DVD drive: Monk, season 6, disc two
On the work computer: clips of Lewis Black on The Daily Show.

Good morning, all! I have to step out tonight to a Fringe Festival show, "The Boss In The Satin Kimono" and it will be nice to spend some time with Matthew, my best friend from college and celebrate his birthday.

DR FJL, the reviews for that dreadful last one act were kinder than I'll ever be; it was dreadful, boring, and contaned not one semblance of any reality i've ever experienced. Thank God for the other three summer shorts.

DR elan, now that Mr LaChiusa's a "serious" composer, getting opera commissions from operatic morons who don't know good musical theatre and think the crap he puts on paper is music: it's tuneless and shapeless so it must be serious contemporary music, I think he's guilty of believing his press, as evidenced by his cruel rundown of Mark Shaiman and other Broadway successes in his infamous OPERA NEWS article.

TOD:
DVD: DIRT (Season 1), several operas
CD:  Rat Pack Christmas, Guy Haines, The Brain From Planet X
VCR:  la vie de la low life

Two more performances of Singin In the Rain!  And then it will be OVAH!

Congrats to Skip on his fine reviews!  Thanks for posting them and the links, DR FJL.

I could not find any photo of Michael Phelps, unless it is the one of him wearing the NEW swimsuit when it was first introduced.  He certainly seems to be glad to have it on.

Otherwise, all of the swimmers seem to be taking the tops down in order to hide the business area when being photographed out of the water...but of course they take them WAAYYYYYYYYYYYY down.
