How we react to such things depends upon our emotional well-being, our mood, the frame of mind we are in, etc., etc.  I've seen some films others recommended to me, and I've scratched my head wondering why.  Later, I'll see one of those films again and suddenly see extraordinary things in it that had eluded me.

No one can avoid such factors when watching films or plays, etc.

I concur. I know my mood will often affect how I respond to a film.

I found my recent film festival screening committee experience quite interesting. There were usually 7 or 8 of us watching a film, presumably watching for the same criteria, yet the responses were so varied! Some variance for artistic merit, but some unexpected personal reactions, too.
It was a good experience; I'm glad I took the time to do it.

Umm... WRONG!

Besides the usual Filipino suspects - balut, dinaguan[/i] - I've also never been that big a fan of bacalao as well as some other foods.

Well, Jose, you certainly don't give that impression! You do come across as a food lover!

I must have been hungry for a Veags buffet while watching Cher, or maybe it was her enunciation these days - I kept hearing her sing "I really don't think your stroganoff" (instead of "strong enough")

Bacalao is not all that hard to find, at least in my neck of the woods. You're on your own for the others, though. A friend of mine posted about his experiences with balut back in his Navy days... do not read if you've just eaten or intend to eat in the next hour or so...

I know baluts.  I never had to eat one, but I've seen plenty of them eaten, primarily during "Chiefs' Initiations" in the Navy.

There must be a law in the universe that no matter how sick you are, as soon as you land in the doctor's office, you're feeling okay, So I felt relatively good today as I tried to to explain the various stomach cramps, mausea, etc.

So, the bad news is, I need to have x-rays (tonorrow) and the good news is I've lost 6 lbs.

Ah, well. If I could have waited until 2:30 to start viewing, I could have watched THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS on Blu-ray and postponed SALO, but since nothing else was here at 1:30, I watched it. Glad to have that part of the review copy behind me.

It's ugly stuff (surprisingly amid such absolutely beautiful teen boys and girls), and I found it VERY difficult to watch. Such scenes of grotesque evil and maliciousness just isn't a film to be enjoyed (at least by me). Now, I understood what he was doing, and while I lamented his excesses to make his symbolic points, I can certainly see how others not put off by the nastiness of the story and characters could find it almost hypnotic.

But, I'm more of a MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS kind of guy.

One the first disc in the set is also the theatrical trailer which I watched. It only hints at the lurid aspects of the story though there are plenty of critics' quotes (including pans) which are selling it as an outrageous art film. They almost DARE the viewer to watch it.

Interesting approach to advertising it. The trailer uses the English dubbing. I watched the film in the original Italian, of course, though it was dubbed, too.

I'll start on the second disc when I go back down. It's got at least three lengthy documentaries on the making of the film and interviews with those connected to it. Should be interesting.

I forgot to mention that also in today's delivery were three more Paramount TV box sets: NCIS, PERRY MASON-Season 3/1, and THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG. The latter is weeks overdue, so I'll put it last since I'm not trying to meet the street date for that one.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!

from my friend Allan (EX DR from the old board) in Bournemouth UK:

"I went to the Watermill Theatre (the tiny one where John Doyle started doing his actors-carrying-instruments productions) as they were doing Sunset Boulevard - not directed by John Doyle. As I sat reading the programme before it started, I read that it was going to be another actors-carrying-instruments production and my heart sank!

However, this was actually superb - much better than overblown productions in the West End and the instruments were less intrusive - Norma was spared the indignity".

Having "Wait Until Dark" and "Night Must Fall" playing on Broadway at almost the same time was one of the more interesting quirks of that season, as memory serves.

There really aren't enough good creep-fests on Broadway anymore.

I guess you missed Suzanne Somers in THE GIRL IN THE THUNDERBIRD.
