Quite right, and it's been corrected. And that must be why I didn't cop the bloody Eliza Doowee gig.

Good Evening!

What a wonderful recital!  Wagner, Massenet, and Puccini were presented with flair and style - as well as with impeccable diction and a magnificent voice.  It had been years since I had heard my friend/classmate, Kara, sing, and her growth and progress since then is remarkable.  It was also good to hear - and see - my college vocal coach, Melanie, again too.  It was another very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.  I also caught up briefly with some other former teachers and students too.  -Oh, and she sang three wonderful songs by R. Pearson Thomas.  I'll have to investigate his writings further.  And her encore of Herbert's "Art Is Calling for Me" had a few choice "interpolations".

After the recital, Steve and I headed out and about and hit various stores to pick up various things.  Hancock Fabrics, Staples, Home Depot and Target.  Then we grabbed dinner at Joe's Inn, and we're currently back at his apartment waiting for the "Sex & The City" finale.

Thus ends the adventures of DR Jose for today... thus far.

-And as I thought would happen, going to the recital this afternoon has re-kindled my classical inkling, and I will most likely find myself in a practice room this week with some Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Ginastera, Chopin, etc.. scores in hand.  Always good to keep my fingers "honest".

DR Jenny - Welcome!

DR Jennifer - I think there's a "Product Locator" on Atkins' web-site.  Maybe you'll find some favorable search result there.  If not, it never hurts to ask the manager of your nearest store to add them to their inventory.

-Back after "Sex & The City".

DR Dan in the North Woods:

At the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia they had a wall of photo essays on great markets.

Your St. Lawrence Market  was prominently displayed.

Do you mean Penny or Panni?  Am I missing a photo of Panni?

I guess I am the lone ranger here, WEL, but I enjoyed Phantom of the Opera both times I saw it.  Is it great theater?  No.  Did I feel like I got my money's worth? Yes.  Was I entertained?  Without a doubt!  Considering the fact that in my mind, Velveeta and Cats rank as two of the worst theater experiences of my life, Phantom was a very pleasant surprise.

On the negative side, I will say that all the hype about the famous chandelier scene in the show is just that -- hype.  I have seen feathers fall with greater speed and velocity.  As I told some friends of mine who were going to see the show on their NY vacation several years ago, That loud thud, heard in Times Square every night at midnight, is just the sound of that damn chandelier finally reaching the stage of the Majestic.

Danise-house work.  DerBrucer has the best answer.

WELCOME JENNY!  Your photo is very cute. Your story might have been sad at the time but it’s great in the retelling of it.

MBarnum we went to the Dollar Tree and picked up some DVD’s.  I was disappointed there weren’t wasn’t a Gracie & Allen DVD, however we did get Make Room for Daddy, some Sherlock Holmes and Mr. & Mrs. North to name a few.

Hey! So, Brucer, thanks for posting the photos! How nice of yuz to have brought yer camera, among other things. show went so well today, too. Full house, three synagogues sent theater parties - lots of little old Jews, guffawing raucously at all my Yiddishisms. Ah, bliss! Sold 24 books, too. color me happy.

Welcome to DR Jenny! I love your Singing Spiritual Women story. We've all been there, in one way or another.  Oh, how the politically correct do protect us...

Not that Penny isn't purdy, but that particular reference was to Panni. There are as yet no photos of purdy Panni and dashin' Bruce at the Awards. Perhaps one will surface in the next few days.

Jenny - Hilarious story. But sad, too.

Dan-in-TO - You may remember this... Jenny's PC run amuck story reminded of years ago in Toronto when a local alderman (was it Ying Hope?) tried to shut down the National Ballet's classic annual production of The Nutcracker because the Chinese dancers were portrayed in a "racist" manner.

DR DerBrucer,

I've already checked out your market, so have a look at ours. Even better, come visit. (I think Philadelphia's is superior for cheese places. And there's no ice cream location at St. Lawrence.) Toronto has a second market - Kensington - which in the years I've been here has changed from a Jewish market to Chinese/Vietnamese to Portuguese to West Indian (with holdovers from each era).

What I really like - and I'm sure you have the equivalent in the Mid-Atlantic - are the farmers' markets in Ontario's small towns. There's a particulary good Mennonite market in Waterloo County.

All right, here's a question for the DRs who are NYC-friendly:

In about a month, der Brucer and I will be heading up to NYC for a day.  I've already got the food questions covered on another site (and have been getting some interesting answers), but when it comes to shopping, I'm still not familiar enough with the area.

So, what bookstores would any of you recommend in the Theater District?  Particularly stores that specialize in books on theater, and books on cooking.

What, no bells?  No whistles?!  This is an outrage!  :-*

Thank you all for the kind welcomes!

You want bells?  Here ya go:

I Hear Bells in the summer night,
Distant bells that no one hears.
I hear moonlight softly chiming,
And the clang of ivy climbing.

I hear the bells on the river dock,
I hear the bells in the city clock, too.
Truly I do.
I could show you.

Are you sad?  Come along with me.
Hear the world with my own ears.
Hear the starlight faintly tinkling,
And the ping of candles twinkling.

I hear the bells in a summer show'r,
Not just the bells on the quarter hour.
If you're in need of a world that can shine,
Come and hear mine!

Call me mad, well, of course you will.
Put me under lock and key.
I'll hear music where I'm rooming,
Like the bong of roses blooming.

I hear the bells in a waterfall,
Bells seem to call from a flower stall, too.
Truly they do.
I could show you.

Is it wrong to be hearing things
Others don't take time to see?
When I feel my special tingle,
And the river starts to jingle

I hear the bells that I love so much,
Bells I can smell, I can taste and touch.
If you're in need of a world that can shine,
Shine,
Shine,
Come and hear mine!
Come and hear mine!
Come and hear mine!

What, no bells?  No whistles?!  This is an outrage!  :-*

Thank you all for the kind welcomes!

You want whistles?  Here's them too!

Anyone can whistle, that's what they say--easy.
Anyone can whistle, any old day--easy.
It's all so simple:  relax, let go, let fly.
So someone tell me why can't I?

I can dance a tango, I can read Greek--easy.
I can sly a dragon, any old week--easy.

What's hard is simple, what's natural comes hard.
Maybe you could show me how to let go,
Lower my guard, learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle, whistle for me.

Whistle at a dragon, down it'll fall--easy.
Whistle at a hero, trumpets and all--easy.

What's hard is simple, what's natural comes hard.
Maybe you could show me how to let go,
Lower my guard, learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle, whistle for me.

Jane, glad you found some goodies! I went to back to the Dollar Tree store on Lancaster but they had sold most of the DVDs already, so I went to the one in Keizer and they had just put the box of them out so I got a Bowery Boys (with Charlotte Henry as a co-star!), an Ida Lupino movie called THE BIGAMIST, a couple of the Dr. Kildare movies starring Lew Ayres, and a few other titles. Keep you eye out, you can find Burns and Allen DVDs quite regularly.

Welcome to new DR Jenny! Glad to you you aboard the good ship HHW!

Welcome, DR Jenny!  Good folk here, each and every one!  Just finished crying through SEX & THE CITY.  I'm saying nothing!

When I saw the National Tour of GREASE in Cincinnati around 1973 or so, I knew no one in the cast at the time:  Rizzo was played by Judy Kaye, Sandy by Candace Early (?) who was later on ALL CHILDREN, and Doody was played by John Travolta.  On my first job with The New Amsterdam Theatre Company, Victor Herbert's EILEEN, I met Judy Kaye, and the first thing this ex tough Pink Lady did was hit a high D.  And that's when I gave her my heart.
