WRITING WITH A. FERVOR
« on: September 05, 2008, 11:58:57 PM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a certain fervor, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently listening to the The Cow Song from the new cast album from Gypsy.

And the word of the day is: SANGUINE!

And, again, the WOD at Merriam-Webster’s .

Sanguine is a very robust linguine, always served with a red sauce.

James Cagney: Yankee Doodle Dandy because it was so different from anything else he did around that time.

Edward G. Robinson: Haven't seen a lot of films of his, but Key Largo (also a Bogart film) is pretty good. He also did a program for Night Gallery called The Messiah of Mott Street (I think that is the name of the street) He plays an old Jewish man who is waiting for the Messiah. His grandson goes out looking for him and brings home a person who he believes is the Messiah.

Bogart: So many films: African Queen. Petrified Forest, The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca,  To Have and Have Not, Beat The Devil (Did you know Stephen Sondheim worked on this movie!!)

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And it looks like the effects of Hannah here in Charlotte today may have already passed over during the overnight.  -At least that's what it looks like outside right now.

In other news...

I have some auditions to play in a few hours - preceded by a briefing for the prospective college students.  So...

I'm hoping the weather in D.C. isn't too terrible.

I really would like to get to the Siganture tonight to see ACE (which features BK pals Emily Skinner and Christiane Noll, as well as Jim Stanek and Jill Paice) - but if it rains heavily, the transportation situation from the theater in Arlington back to the Doubletree in D.C. is untenable

Saturday morning greetings!  Today's an information-waitressing day for me.  When it's over, I'll only have 12 more to go!

I posted this thought on All That Chat, and no one seems to be interested in talking about it [I think there are other important theater matters going on, including Harry Potters private parts making their Bway debut last night] -  so I figured I'd post it here, too, so that even if no one talks about it, it will remains googlable (is that a word?) on the innernet.  :)

IIRC, 32 years ago, the theater community then was absolutely sure SO LONG 174TH ST was a terrible musical

And now, after its composer-lyricist Stan Daniels did not bless us with more fun scores but instead went back to Hollywood pretty much humiliated by his Broadway experience, it's being given a very promising chance at rediscovery.

I don't mean this as a poll, but it makes me wonder - should something like this be a sign that critics should comment on the shows in an interesting and (to their readers) entertaining way, but not set about eviscerating and maiming the talent of people whose work they're not liking.

I think of the many scores that we've been deprived of from people like the late Stan Daniels because the critics in the key outlets went after them with a machete rather than just finding a literate way of saying the piece just doesn't work.

SO LONG 174TH STREET got another chance as ENTER LAUGHING because the York Theater had the wisdom to do a Mufti series of Joseph Stein works. But how many talents were silenced ovr the years because the critics needed to be nasty for the sake of entertaining readers, rather just being advisors to their readers?

DR FJL - I hope you have a smooth trip to DC and that you get to see Ace.  Jill Paice is a local (Dayton-area) girl and has quite a fan base here.

God morning, all! I slept late abd I'm pondering breakfast.

Today, I am back to Huck Finn and Cinderella edits today. Tonight I'm attending a 22nd wedding anniversary party for Mr & Mrs Ron Raines, so I need to put some thought into what I shall write on their card and go out and purchase one.

DR Jose, yes, I'm still taking the bilberry.

Thanks, Laura.  More important than my own seeing a show, of course,  I hope the weather doesn't do any real damage to anyone.

Tomorrow should be a lovely day for my cousin's wedding in D.C., though.

Enter Laughing will be playing here later this fall. So I just might go see it.

But maybe in this case the critics may have been partially correct. Retooling the show for Robert Morse may have been a mistake

Good Morning, once again!

We're about to start here, and it looks like it will be a pretty decent group of high school seniors auditioning for the colleges who are in attendance here. I am reminded, however, just how much different this "game" is I'm comparison to the professional auditions.

And here we go!

I got up ten minutes later than I wanted, but we'll see if I can de-groggify and joggify in the next fifteen or twenty minutes - 50/50 right now.

When her pianist had to run to the bathroom, Cleo the cabaret artist merrily SANGUINE a capella.

DR Jose is absolutely right; I believe Hannah passed us by with only a mist and some breeze. After all the talk of deluges of rain, we got almost nothing.
