Jose,

Here's gig you can miss:

FOX411

Quote
"Dreamgirls" is going on a national tour, returning to the stage after the hit movie (still the best film of 2006, I think).

But first there’s going to be an open casting call for the main players on Nov. 1 at the Apollo Theater. Sign in is from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

I’m just getting the Advil out thinking of all those girls singing "And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going." That should be quite a day in Apollo history!

der Brucer

Umm... I'm not playing that day, but I may be there, so...  I really just want to see how many people turn out.  They already had a few days of open calls two weeks ago.  They had a good turnout, but it wasn't too crazy (thankfully).  However, I suspect they will set it up like the "American Idol" auditions with various levels of screening - which will include an initial sing for a panel of people... a cappella.  I know the lead casting director on this project, and since there are no TV cameras involved, I'm pretty sure there won't be too many people passed through for "entertainment purposes".  ;)

And I've been asked to come in to work today.  I had a hunch I would be, since it's been raining and that always means someone on the staff melts.

Glad I got a good night's sleep, and I do feel better because of it.

Ray Conniff actually had a quite storied arranging career, starting in the Swing Era.  While I always preferred his label-mate Percy Faith, some of Conniff's arrangments are quite wonderful.  I doubt, for instance, that anyone would mistake his big hits "Somewhere My Love" or "Happiness Is" for foxtrots.

So, after I walked DR singdaw back down to Grand Central, I decided to go ahead and just walk back across town to catch the A Train over at Eighth Avenue.  -It's a truly nice evening here in NYC.

As I was walking past Town Hall, I noticed there was a crowd waiting at the stage door.  It turned out that Don Rickles was playing there this week, and people were waiting for him to come out so that they could get autographs.  Well, among those stage door Johnnies were a couple of friends from the Mary Poppins cast.  They hadn't seen Mr. Rickles tonight, but they had some friends and relatives who had, so they just ran over to Town Hall after they were done to wait with them.  Well, they didn't feel like waiting - apparently, Mr. Rickles was taking his time.  However, they did feel like heading over to O'Lunney's for a beer or two.  So...

I am assuming that your friends in the MARY POPPINS cast do not play Jane and Michael Banks.

Well, the major requirements for being Jane and Michael Banks are height and voice range, so, ya' never know. ;)

It seems the Joseph kolinski who played the Celebrant in MASS in the day (Jose's reply #13) may have been, indeed actually is, the same Joe Kolinski who played Centauri on the Kritzerland CD of the musical THE LAST STARFIGHTER, as well as in the NYMF readings where BK played the "Dan O'Herlihy" part to Joe Kolinski's "Robert Preston."

Yep, one in the same.

When I worked on Dangerous Beauty up at New York Stage & Film, Joe/Joseph Kolinski was in the cast.  -And the Bernstein "Mass" was the first thing I talked to him about - along with his work in the first national tour of Les Miserables.

I actually liked some of Ray Conniff's early band arrangements, and I'll admit I don't think I've heard his version of "Happiness Is."

TOD:

The Right Stuff (which won the Oscar but never did get a proper recording)

FYI:  The recording we did get is what Conti planned for when the original cues were mixed for an LP release.  I have heard a tape of his original concept, and it's virtually identical to the re-recording he did for Varese Sarabande.  The problem with a direct recording of the chronological tracks, I've been told, is that they don't flow as a "listening" experience because there were short or abrupt cues throughout the film rather than lengthy pieces.  But that may be off base.  It's been a long, long time since I saw the film.

TOD:  Oh, me!  I could never choose just one CD to take with me to a desert island, I'm afraid.

All-time favorite original film scores include "The Wizard of Oz", "The Song of Bernadette", "Now, Voyager", "The Adventures of Robin Hood", "The Prisoner of Zenda", "Spellbound," "Laura", "Hangover Square", "The Razor's Edge", "All About Eve", "Sunset Boulevard", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "A Place in the Sun," "Quo Vadis", "David and Bathsheba", "The Robe", "High Noon", "Lili", "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", "Love is A Many-Splendored Thing", "Around the World in 80 Days", "Giant", "Friendly Persuasion", "The Diary of Anne Frank","El Cid", "Exodus", "Ben-Hur", "Lawrence of Arabia","To Kill A Mockingbird", "How the West Was Won", "Spartacus","Cleopatra","The Blue Max", "Mary Poppins", "The Sand Pebbles", "The Shoes of the Fisherman", "The Lion in Winter", "The Reivers", "Fall of the Roman Empire", "The Nun's Story", "Breakfast at Tiffany's",  "Two for the Road", and on and on and on.

If I had to grab just one and make do:  "To  Kill A Mockingbird".

Yep... It's a lazy afternoon here at Chez Harlem.  However, it looks like I'll be heading out in a few with my roommate, Jim, and his father (who's visiting this weekend) for a late brunch at Community Food & Juice.  -Blueberry Pancakes! YUM!!

And that's only in Ohio?

Only in the first verse; he clears things up in the end:

Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the two shall meet...

I see trouble brewing with a phrase like "clears things up in the end" - probably a PrepH joke.
