There were some fun bonus features, too. There's a digital yulelog video (except the log is actually burning books), three alternate endings to the special, a cut song (very pretty), and a 25-day advent calendar.

Next, I watched the rest of the Legacy edition of VERTIGO that I'd recently watched in two previous installments. Lots of people are bothered by that repurposed Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, but I like it. When Judy is completely transformed and comes into his arms, that music just seeps around and envelopes the viewer. I find it rather magical.

And then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Yep, Luke is there trying to have a confrontation with Brian and trying to spill the beans to his mother,k both thwarted in typical stupid soap operary fashion.

Since I finished my work project for the day, I should be able to watch CSI: NY and L&O tonight when I go back down before UGLY BETTY begins.

A pause...

I guess I must be in one of those cycles, phases... I've actually tear'd up a few times over the past two hours. It's amazing how inspiring and moving talent coupled with youthful innocence can be.

It's about time for me to sign off here and go have my hair cut.  After that, Richard and I are meeting for Chinese food, so it'll be a while before I'm back online.

Bye for now!

MattH, the problem with the 5.1 Vertigo track is not the music, which sounds fine.  It's that every single bit of foley has been redone - and that's not only not fine, it's unacceptable and is nowhere near the quality of the original Hitchcock sound mix, which is why they needed to put the original mono track on.

I understand the point, and I agree that the original mono should be available. The new track is fine with me.

Well you wrote, "and I guess I'll wear a coat if absolutely necessary (whilst jogging)", which to me made it sound like you might not wear one. I guess you were only talking about during jogging (it wasn't clear to me).

When I got in, I immediately put on A COLBERT CHRISTMAS. The 44-minutes were just as nutty and fun as expected. Colbert has a surprisingly rich baritenor singing voice. I think I enjoyed his solos as much as anyone else on the special. Elvis Costello, Toby Keith, Willie Nelson, Jon Stewart, John Legend, and Feist are the guests.

The biggest laugh for me: Colbert offered to roast some chestnuts on his open fire. The problem is his open fire is a digiital fireplace and the nuts just bounced off the screen. Hilarious.

SPOILERS!!

Does anyone shop at Petland’s?

The Humane Society just completed an eight-month investigation & found that Petland stores in multiple states are marketing dogs from cruel puppy mills to unsuspecting dog buyers.

I do know it will be cold in NY - although it IS my intention to bring the warm weather with me.  I'll have a nice sweatshirt, and I guess I'll wear a coat if absolutely necessary (whilst jogging), but my legs will have to suffer the cold, I suppose, because I cannot jog in pants, running pants or otherwise.  And I may decide not to jog every day anyway.

:o You're going to run without pants??

Once things got going the installation actually was fairly easy. I take "easy 3-step installation" with a grain of salt but it was fairly painless and the fact that the laptop can share the connection as well is even better. I went to all the graphics heavy sites that take minutes (or more) to load at home, like the Credit Union and The New York Times and Hallmark (looking at some e-cards) and they all load quickly and without incident. What a relief.

The hardest thing I did was replace our phone. We had a very good 14 year old Toshiba cordless phone and we also had an answering machine (Anthony doesn't want to go to voice mail from Verizon, he's funny that way) a Caller ID box and a unit which told us we were getting an incoming call when we were on line with dial-up. If I kept all those devices I would need to put a DSL filter on each of them along with the regular phone line. It was easier to just get a new phone with an answering machine attached so last night after work I went shopping for a phone. I was just looking for something simple with a decent amount of message recording time. I ended up with something more elaborate but easy to install. We now have a corded land line with two cordless handset. The main unit has an answering machine with 28 minutes of recording time, a phone book for speed dialing, Caller ID and Call Waiting and other features. The handsets are not ready to use yet because they take 16 HOURS to charge!!! But the main phone unit works along with all the bells and whistles. It had just one cord to plug into the phone jack (along with the DSL filter). Everything works well. I got up this morning at 5am and the first thing I did was turn on the computer and go on line to make sure it wasn't just a fluke. I sped around the Internet and decided it will, indeed, work. What a relief.

And now back to work.

Caller ID?  Is that why no one ever answers when I call?

I got some chicken tenders and a couple of chicken egg rolls for meal o' the day - very yummilicious.  They didn't exactly make me full, but they did the trick.

Whoa, I just checked Butterball.com and learned that we're already a day behind in turkey-thawing time.  It says that you should allow one-day in the refrigerator for every 4 pounds and we think our turkey is 28 pounds.  It's out of the freezer now and we'll hope for the best.

I apologize for not being around much today.  It's been another eventful day around these parts.

I woke early this morning and Toby and I headed off to my meeting with payroll.  Without getting into too much detail, the problem was that the payroll gal forgot to take into account all of my leave slips for my maternity leave, and put me back on the full time payroll at the beginning of October.  This was her error.
I caught said error and called it in about two weeks ago.  She apologized profusely and sent me some paperwork for paying the money back.  Jed, my wonderful math whiz of a husband, looked at her spreadsheet and said "She did the math wrong on this."  Not only had she calculated the pay wrong, she also asked me to pay back the GROSS pay, meaning I would pay back to the college the income tax they paid on my mistaken wages, out of my own pocket.  So her error would end up costing me about $300.

Well, there was no way I was going to accept that.  So I had a meeting with her and her boss.  I showed them the error that Jed had found, and Payroll Gal said "Oh, you're right, oops."  Her boss rolled his eyes.  Then I asked her about the income tax, and she said "Sorry, I can't get it back from the government so it has to come back to us somehow."  I said "What??"  and her boss said "What???" And he told her there was no way she was going to ask me to pay back money that I'd never received in the first place.  Yay for him.  So I ended up paying back just what I'd been overpaid and not a cent more.

-her boss also asked me what my husband did for a living, and seemed amazed that he was able to catch the mistake so easily.   :D

So that was the good part of the day.

The rest of the day was spent finding out that the childcare place I thought was read for Toby in January is in fact NOT going to have a spot for him in January.  So I've been scouring the internet and making phone calls trying to find a place that has room for him that won't put us in the poor house with the tuition.  That search goes on.

DR JMK - how did the Frances Farmer Festival go?

You're asking me?  I asked you days ago if your sister attended.

Oh....I guess I missed that post.....no she did not, unless she is keeping it a secret.
